Hayley Atwell Captain America 2 Hayley Atwell Wont Appear in Captain America 2

One of the best parts of Captain America was Hayley Atwell’s performance as Peggy Carter, a strong-willed soldier who was more than a match for Steve Rogers.

Unfortunately, Carter didn’t appear in The Avengers, though there was a scene referencing the character that didn’t make it into the movie. In it, Cap reads through a dossier on his friends from World War II and learns that Carter is still alive. Joss Whedon also wrote a scene where Rogers meets up with present day Peggy, now 70 years older, but it was never filmed.

Many were hoping that this scene might make it into Captain America 2, but it looks like that might not be happening (at least not with Atwell in old person make-up). In a recent interview with Time Out London, Atwell confirmed that she wouldn’t be making an appearance in the film. Carter won’t appear in any flashback sequences either.

Does that also mean that an older Carter won’t show up in the film, played by a different actress? Not necessarily. We know that Captain America will meet Peggy’s niece Sharon Carter as a love interest and that several actresses are in discussions for the role, with Jessica Brown Findlay currently in the lead for the part. Maybe we’ll see a scene where Peggy Carter shows up to give Steve the go-ahead to date her relative.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will see star Chris Evans reprise his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America. It will also see newcomers Anthony Mackie in the role of the Falcon and Frank Grillo as the villain Crossbones. Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Cobie Smulders will reprise their respective roles as Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Agent Maria Hill. Sebastian Stan will also return as Bucky Barnes, the titular villain.

Are you disappointed that Hayley Atwell won’t be appearing in Captain America 2? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Yay, Bucky!!!!! I don’t really care beyond that.

  2. That’s too bad, I really liked her in Captain America.

    • yeah, I thought she was class in that film. Too bad.

  3. Already a blow. She was the best Marvel lady in my opinion (that wasn’t Black Widow).

    • Agreed. Though Natalie Portman was quite good too.

      • Natalie Portman was a terrible Jane Foster IMO.

        • Agreed Avenger. Natalie Portman, although beautiful and one of my favorites actresses of this generation, had a horrible part in Thor. Having an A-list celeb play a supporting role in a blockbuster movie just looks out of place IMO.

        • Agreed, she was awful! just awful! almost any other competent actor could have brought more depth to her character. NP sleepwalked through the darn thing. too bad she’s gonna show up in Thor II

        • I thought her character was pretty charming.

          • well you’re certainly entitled to your opinion Sir,but personally, I was unimpressed!

  4. Little bit disappointed but then again I don’t see how they can insert her in the sequel, there seems to be too many characters in it already.

    • Agree !

  5. Damn, she was talented and beautiful. Really could have gone for her returning.

  6. That sucks, I wish they would have covered this in ‘The Avengers’. It’s a shame to have the most heartfelt ending in the entire Marvel movie universe fall by the way side. They can easily touch on this in a flashback cameo letter reading montage.

  7. This is very disappointing news.
Having her in old-person make-up would have been the best way to go.
I was also still hoping Marvel would cast her as Sharon Carter (when Atwell’s hair is blonde, she looks a lot different than when she’s a brunette IMO).
    Very sad indeed :(

  8. Wow. Guess I’m a minority here, but I thought she was the least interesting leading lady I had seen in any movie in years. Whenever she was on the screen my brain basically turned off… she had no stage presence, her acting felt incredibly flat, and I don’t even think she’s especially pretty. To each his own, I guess…

    • I’m with you Alex, I hated her character, acting, and looks. But I didn’t like Cap in general, worst of the Marvel movies in my opinion.

      • I agree.. It was great but for some reason I just wanted more. I thought the red skull was kind of silly. I didn’t understand why capt had to crash the plane into the ice, why the bombs had to have city names painted on them, those are 2 flaws that hishe (howitshouldhaveended) point out hilariously btw. I enjoyed Cap america but I think that it was the weakest phase 1 movie of the bunch.

  9. she’s an outstanding actress in the first avenger.

  10. awwww really liked her in captain america maybe she can appear in captain america 3? =0

  11. Hayley is a wonderful actress and did a wonderful job as Peggy, but it doesn’t surprise me that she’s not in this movie. I do hope they do a meetup with present day Peggy though. I’m excited Scarlett is going to be in this movie, Black Widow is one of my favorites. I just hope they don’t play into the comics to much and do the whole Black Widow/Winter Soldier storyline. I’m all about Black Widow/Hawkeye.

  12. Who was Amanda Righetti playing in the after credits of Captain America: The First Avenger?

  13. NOOOO!!! BRING HER BACK!!! She was the best leading lady, not just in a Marvel film, but in ALL comic book movies… Including Batman. The emotional connection with Cap, the depth of her character… I tell ya, this scriptwriters’ decision is a mistake — you’ll be disappointing a lot of people who were happy with the first film! Bring her back in Part 3… or better yet, surprise me that Peggy Carter and Cindy Glass can be combined into one character. The first movie had that element. Just BRING HER BACK

  14. I’m crushed that Hayley Atwell will not be in anymore Captain America films. They were such a perfect item who never got together. Would’ve loved to see the two take it to the next level.

  15. Bring her back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. More make-believe eurasian junk propatainment America will never see, never hear about and never know exists. The real “Captain America” is quite a different being, indeed. Too bad for this alien liar and its fiction that America never went to their movies or watched their television or read their publications. America did, however, kick their lying ass out of America, which you can say at this time as America once again culls its alien population in a large way.

  17. She is in the next Captain America you bunch of twerps!

  18. i wish Hayley Atwell will be in Captain America 2, even for just a bit role. her acting was really great in the first movie…

  19. What a disappointment. I was waiting to see Hayley in Captain America 2. Please bring her back.
