‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Trailer: Politics, Thrills & Cool New Characters

Published 1 year ago by , Updated April 17th, 2014 at 9:31 pm,

Being a fish out of water as a legendary World War II soldier frozen in ice for 70 years is one thing, but waking up to immediately becoming a world-famous hero of the modern era and not knowing who to trust – as what little you know comes crumbling down around you –  is another entirely. Poor Steve Rogers has not had an easy time as Captain America and it’s only going to get worse when a friend from the past returns as a foe of the present in the film’s sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Building off of the new poster and teaser footage, the first full-length trailer for Captain America 2 raises the stakes for its titular hero – and the franchise – while successfully proving that Marvel Studios and directors (and brothers) Anthony and Joe Russo have crafted something not only intentionally different than its predecessors, but vastly larger in terms of scale and scope. The action sequences alone are giving the biggest battles of The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World a run for their money.

The themes of the Captain America 2, previously described as a “political thriller” by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, are very evident in the teaser trailer and fans – much like the characters on screen – don’t know who to trust. That’s part of the moral dilemma for Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who’s seen questioning S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) while the secretive organization he works for is torn apart, possibly from the inside. We see Rogers having to fight off his own people in the infamous elevator sequence that played well at Comic-Con, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjet attacking Rogers and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and the most shocking of all -a shot of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier (or at least one of them) from The Avengers crashing and burning.

There’s also the history between spy Black Widow and the brainwashed Bucky Barnes – aka The Winter Soldier – which will play into the story, along with the introduction of Robert Redford’s mysterious new authority figure. Marvel Comics readers will note the classic S.H.I.E.L.D. logo, seemingly from the office of Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce character.

Official Captain America: The Winter Soldier synopsis:

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

  1. Loved it. Winter Solider looked slick. Robert Redford in a comic book film! The genre has officially arrived. Can’t wait for Thor, but this CA film looks more epic and more engrossed in the shared Marvel universe. End of Line.

  2. Wow. This may be the best yet.

  3. Cant wait for the plot and action! Im Cumming already!

    • Uh…ya…perhaps…perhaps keep that last bit yourself…

  4. It’s watching trailers like this that remind me that I don’t care whether it’s DC or Marvel character, all I care about is that it’s done well. This looks good. I can’t wait to watch it!

    • I agree

  5. I was watching this trailer in my car while waiting for my food at Sonic. The people in the car next to me took notice when I yelled “Yes!” and fist pumped after the line, “Before we do this, does anyone want out?”

  6. 1. What happened to Black Widows Russian accent

    2. Trailer kept showing the number 42. Hitch hikers guide reference?

    • I believe 42 is a reference to the maximum security prison for super powered villainz…

      • yes it is

        • In the Avengers Animated show there is a prison Ultron guards oversee. Maybe this will be the first time they hint at having androids/robots starting to oversee the criminals? Hence the introduction of Ultron for the Avengers 2 movie.

    • she only had the accent when she was speaking russian in the avengers. no accent in im2

      • Yeah I was about to write “what accent? you act like she had an accent in other movies…”

    • What happened to Black Widows Russian accent? It never existed, not sure where you heard a Russian accent, other than when she actually spoke Russian.

  7. I think we can all agree that… THIS WAS JUST SO COOL!

    Like… Wow.

I had no idea I was holding my breath till it ended and I exhaled. Falcon was… wow. Bucky is just… wow. And I hope Cap beats the stars and stripes outta more people cos he’s just so much better at it here.

Oh and this doesn’t need the Red Skull IMHO.

  8. Holy smokes! That looks amazing!

  9. This looks MUCH better than the first. Don’t get me wrong, as the first one is entertaining, but I was not blown away by it. I give it a C+.

  10. Finally someone took down the Helicarrier, it’s a comic tradition that i love to show how big this threath is.

  11. I think this film will usher in a new era of cinema. I see 9-10 CBM a year from 2015-2020.

  12. The first movie was made for the sole purpose of introducing Steve Rogers as the kind of man people should aspire to be; the man behind the shield. I don’t think it was made to be an excellent piece of cinema. This one, on the other hand, looks like they want to take Captain America seriously and show audiences how awesome he can be and what he would be like in a modern, geopolitical centric world.

  13. Oh my gosh, I just slobbered right on the screen! I am ready for this movie now!

  14. Nick Fury: “You need to keep both eyes open”….Irony.

    • I lol’d.
He said something like that in the avengers also.

  15. My favorite part was Guyliner Bane at the end.

    • You mean Winter Soldier? Yeah, the guyliner was a rather…non-human, but awesome touch. I wasn’t too blown away, but I hope the movie is still awesome!

  16. Wow, just wow. That was insane. Also, Redford is definitely giving off villain-vibes here. Just about everything that he said sounded like a veiled threat.

  17. Looks great! Though I wonder where is Hawkeye is…

  18. OMG!! 10 seconds into the trailer and it already gave me goosebumps! EPIC!

  19. I literally couldn’t stop watching it…

  20. Can’t wait for the Red Skull to pull his Robert Redford mask off in Act 3.

    • I think that he’s General Alexander Lukin (the former KGB officer who controlled Winter Soldier in the comics). Save Red Skull for Cap 3.

      • One thing I really like about Cap 1 is that Red Skull (with his Hugo Weaving peel-off “mask”) sorta introduced the idea that he could put any mask on and become other people. I didn’t really think of it until someone suggested Redford could be playing a disguised Red Skull.

I admit I’m very rusty on my “red skull in the comics” lore so I don’t remember if he did this often or at all in the comics.

  21. This is trailer is bad ass.

  22. Out of all the marvel heroes cap is my fav. Cant wait for this one

  23. With Thor 2 and Cap 2 coming, it almost seems a crime that there’s no scheduled IM sequel at this point. We’re missing one of The Big 3!

    • You’re kidding, right?

      • hm?

        • Iron man 3 came out this year. . . .

          • Yes.

  24. sweat ass bro

  25. Is the best of Marvel/Disney incoming? It looks like it might stomp even IronMan 1.

  26. hoooo-lyyyyyyy cooooowwwww, hawesome ^_^

  27. Winter Soldier a secret SHIELD agent?

    • no?

    • Not so much.

  28. I still can’t get over how awesome that quick falcon scene of his wings opening up is

  29. I hate this mobile version of the site. It’s so dang glitchy on my iPad
