‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Trailer: Politics, Thrills & Cool New Characters

Published 2 years ago by , Updated April 17th, 2014 at 9:31 pm,

Being a fish out of water as a legendary World War II soldier frozen in ice for 70 years is one thing, but waking up to immediately becoming a world-famous hero of the modern era and not knowing who to trust – as what little you know comes crumbling down around you –  is another entirely. Poor Steve Rogers has not had an easy time as Captain America and it’s only going to get worse when a friend from the past returns as a foe of the present in the film’s sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Building off of the new poster and teaser footage, the first full-length trailer for Captain America 2 raises the stakes for its titular hero – and the franchise – while successfully proving that Marvel Studios and directors (and brothers) Anthony and Joe Russo have crafted something not only intentionally different than its predecessors, but vastly larger in terms of scale and scope. The action sequences alone are giving the biggest battles of The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World a run for their money.

The themes of the Captain America 2, previously described as a “political thriller” by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, are very evident in the teaser trailer and fans – much like the characters on screen – don’t know who to trust. That’s part of the moral dilemma for Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who’s seen questioning S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) while the secretive organization he works for is torn apart, possibly from the inside. We see Rogers having to fight off his own people in the infamous elevator sequence that played well at Comic-Con, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjet attacking Rogers and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and the most shocking of all -a shot of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier (or at least one of them) from The Avengers crashing and burning.

There’s also the history between spy Black Widow and the brainwashed Bucky Barnes – aka The Winter Soldier – which will play into the story, along with the introduction of Robert Redford’s mysterious new authority figure. Marvel Comics readers will note the classic S.H.I.E.L.D. logo, seemingly from the office of Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce character.

Official Captain America: The Winter Soldier synopsis:

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

  1. Jump scene from Iron Man…
Elevator fight from Quantum of Solace…
Falcon jump from Hawkeye jump in Avengers…
Hellicarrier crash from ship crash in Star Trek Into Darkness…

    Trailer looked good though:)

    • So when Hulk punched the Chitauri monster thing in Avengers did you immediately scream out Hancock ripoff?

Trailer was amazing, give me my ticket now!

      • It’s called a Chitauri Leviathan.

    • I am afraid its always going to be taken from somewhere. Hopefully each time it is they up the ante each time with better action, better visuals, and better direction.

  2. Since this trailer came out today, X-Men DoFP decided to come out with a 5-second teaser for their trailer as well.

  3. For the record, in Captain America: The First Avenger
Cap did bail out of a plane with a parachute.

    • He put one on in Avengers but apparently removed it by the time he was seen by Thor and Iron Man on the ground.

      • He also managed to speak to team members spread out across New York without the need for an ear piece or some form of communication device.

Apparently, cupping your hand to your ear allows you to make long distance calls in Whedon’s world.

        • They explained that on Agents of SHIELD. Retcon at it’s finest 😉

  4. I’m not liking how Black Widow’s speech seems to be getting more casual. She is an agent and spy and in this clip seems more like a girl in a club.
Does her character have a continuity ‘handler’ like Captain has a creative overseer, Thor does, Hulk, Stark, etc…?
It seems she needs one to keep integrity in the way the character is brought to screen from scene to scene and movie to movie.

    • BW isn’t a robot. She perfectly capable of wit and humorous, she does it in the comics as well. She just knows when to be professional and when to be fun. She was in a plane with a friend/colleague, so the dialogue was fine.

  5. Infinitely more impressed by this than anything I have seen of ‘Thor: The Dark World’, which seems to be an expensive version of a plot of the week TV show. By this I mean, 5-10 minutes on the overall long goal narrative of phase 2 before and after what the movie is focusing on itself as a standalone.

Just looks a little… cleaner? Less fuddled by on screen CGI? I don’t know how to clarify it. Different characters lending themselves to different scenarios I guess. Maybe I just prefer a little less super in a hero.

  6. IM3 was an abomination! This looks legit.

    • -infinity

    • +infinite

  7. Scarlett Johansson’s line delivery at the beginning of the trailer is atrocious. Could she sound any more lackluster? The rest looks good, though.

    • Agree!

    • I think that was the point…to make it seem like they were having a casual break room conversation before completing a high-end secret agent case. That’s why it leads to the two guys talking about him jumping without a parachute

      • It didn’t sound casual. It sounded heavily drugged.

  8. I hate to admit, but this trailer is quite disappointing. Sure, cool action pieces, huge scale of conflict, cool planes raining… and then what? What really sets this movie apart from, say, G.I. Joe?

Hope the next trailer will deliver.

    • Seriously, that’s just a ridiculous comment.

      • AGREED! Comparing this trailer to GI Joe is a whole new level of “wtf?!!”. lol

  9. This looks really good.

  10. Amazing! Wish there were more scenes with the Winter Soldier and Falcon in his armor.

    • Also judging from the trailer, I’m guessing Russia has nothing to do with the attacks and employing the Winter Soldier, no?

      • If that were true they could’ve easily ditched the red star on his shoulder.

My guess is it’s a splintered off special opps unit that yearns for the old days of Soviet Russia (which is what the red star is from).

    • Sorta looks like winter soldier works for a spliter cell within shield.

  11. After the reviews Thor is getting, the leaked footage from Guardians of the Galaxy, and a glimpse of what CATWS is offering, I hope RDJ feels a bit embarrassed and hashes out another Iron Man/team-up to redeem his franchise. Just from this trailer, it shows you can pepper humor in there but keep a serious tone and know some $h%! is going down. Never felt that in IM3.

I know it made a ton of money but honestly, is that the Iron Man movie you expected or really wanted? I enjoyed it for what it is, and didn’t even mind the ol switcha-roo they pulled; however, the story suffered greatly and overall mood was very lackluster. No real sense of anything.

    • @Tiso

I completely agree, whilst the Thor and Cap sequels may not make as much money, they definitely look like they will both be far more superior. That shouldn’t come off as too much of a surprise really. Both Thor’s and Cap’s stories are kind of forced to take a different direction which in turn hopefully make then more fresher, bolder and more exciting than IM3 ever was.

      • Completely agree as well. IM3 just felt like a gag reel, I never felt any kind of emotion there.

        • Disagree, I thought Stark’s anxiety attacks were brilliantly portrayed (as someone who’s had a few of them myself) and the few lighthearted moments stood out in the overall dark and more serious tone that IM3 conveyed.

          • The thing is tho…those anxiety attacks were never really discussed/resolved. The whole time it was just “oh they’re happening because of New York” uhhh….ok why? I never once remember them saying it was due to Stark running into aliens or having a near death experience. The attacks just came….and went…and that was it.

          • while i also like im3, there were more than a “few” lighthearted moments. it was just this side of being a full blown comedy. the farrelly bros could have directed that.

            • RDJ has nothing to be ashamed about. The problems with that movie were with the script and direction. He was brilliant as always. In fact, all of the acting was really good.

              • @Bond007

I agree…sorta. As you said, RDJ was brilliant in it, truly was. I loved watching RDJ being RDJ, because his version of Tony Stark is a massive improvement compared to the comics.

While I do agree the script was to blame, but RDJ is Marvel’s gold boy. He answers to no one for the most part, and approved pretty much every thing that happened in IM3 with his buddy Shane Black. Damn, he even changed the color of the suit for the movie, that was his decision, not the Marvel’s. I am just saying, RDJ basically has the final say if he really wants them changed, is that a good thing? I don’t know, but seemed to be the case for IM3. No one saying, lets scale this back a bit and focus more on this.

I’d want to see him try to recapture that Iron Man 1 magic that really kicked off this whole universe….That would be a great ending to his career as Tony Stark.

                • Hello from the Future, in which I have already seen Thor:TDW. It is very lackluster, in my opinion. Iron Man 3 on the other hand was, in fact, the film that I wanted it to be. I liked and enjoyed it immensely.

CA:TWS looks better than either at this point, though.

All that being said, Iron Man (#1) is still the best Marvel Studios film.

      • There’s really no question at this point that both films will be far superior to IM3, which is a shame really because the first two Iron Man films set up and hinted at so much mythology that Shane Black just completely threw out the window with his so-called “brilliant” twist. Some of my friends defend it as being “original” and “doing something new and risky”. Well. It’s like a bizarre Quixotic argument, praising something just on the principle of it “having the balls” to experiment. The handling of the Mandarin in IM3 leaves me concerned for Dr. Strange.

  12. Oh yeah, Cap is one of my top three Avengers and this looked awesome!!!!

    • I’m with you on that. Cap: First Avenger was the best of the Marvel films and Avengers tied in with that very nicely (all my opinion, of course). There’s a lot of great elements within this teaser that scream some of the best elements of Caps character and internal conflicts. Way more excited about this than Thor 2.

  13. From what I see in the trailer, this movie is gonna have a different feel from the other MCU movies. i remember a few months back, Marvel was labeling this as a government thriller type of movie. Looks like it. Im actually looking forward to seeing this. Looks like it has alot of depth.

  14. And i love the extra scene at the end of the trailer with Winter Soldier catching Cap’s shield.

  15. yes.

  16. Everybody is fans of the russo brothers now.

  17. Poor Helicarrier. 2 movies, 2 big destructions.

    Can’t wait!

    • Yep, about the same way I drive and crash cars!

  18. I must say it looks surprisingly serious and dramatic in tone to the point where there is a geniuine threat in the story. I for one would applaud a a political / satirical tone for sure. It definitely looks a more modern techno thriller for sure.

It’s really great to see Marvel attempting to make the Phase 2 movies a lot more diverse & distinguishable. Like Thor Dark World, Winter Soldier has a freshness and novelty about that Iron Man 3 couldn’t really match (not that it really tried to be different anyway)

I’m liking Cap’s second costume and Falcon is looking a lot more cooler that originally anticipated.

From the overall disappointing IM3, to the so far good but not great reviews for Dark World, it definitely looks like there’s an upward curve in quality regarding the Phase two movies. But as we know trailers can be very deceiving in the worst way.

As for Scarlett Johannsson? she manages to get hotter every time and don’t really know how she does it. If there ever is a solo Black Widow movie I will be watching for sure. Give that woman whatever she wants.

    • B*+&% please, people have been complaining up and down all this time because Iron Man 3 was all sorts of different that what they were use to.

      • +1

IM3 was a great movie but crybabies didn’t like the change to a darker tone or the fact there was a plot twist instead of being spoon fed like in previous Marvel movies (especially The Avengers) so they b*tched and whined, claiming it was a bad movie but the reality is, they don’t know what good movies actually are.

        • Darker tone???? You mean the movie that couldn’t take have one scene without some wise crack forced joke, and then went along to make the main villain a joke as well?

          • I am so glad I was not drinking coffee when I read that “darker tone” line. Yikes. Did Dazz watch the same movie we watched? I don’t think so….

        • Oh look! Dazz the contrarian is at it again! Every time someone stats an opinion that differs from yours you jump at his comment and antagonize! Like “hey look! I’m far smarter & deeper than you guys!” You are officially the most annoying person in screen rant sir! Hope you’ll realize someday people are bound to have different tastes and how much it sucks to be an egotistical a*s that you are.

          • Well put, Dan. Well put indeed.

  19. I really like the 1st Captain America. I thought I wouldn’t because my expectations were low. But after watching this trailer my expectations might go through the roof because that REALLY made me want to see this movie.

I hope those weren’t the best scenes of the movie. Cant wait to see it!!!

  20. Movie looks like it will be another good one.

  21. Me likey!

  22. Is it just me or the action sequences in this trailer indicate the movie will have some J.I.Joe feel in it? Though i won’t mind it given J.I.Joe was originally a knockoff of S.H.I.E.L.D. Just a better and deep story-line to set it apart from other average action movies and it’ll be cool.

    • J.I. Joe…is that some kinda Korean knock-off I don’t know about?

      • Taiwanese

  23. That… Was… AWESOME!! Excellent Trailer. I can’t wait for this movie!

  24. Shiaaaaat!

  25. “this isnt freedom ..this is fear”…….civil war arc in future? the GRAND finale of marvel?

    • I am DEFINITELY starting to get that Civil War vibe!

  26. That did in 2:27 minutes what The Avengers failed to do in a 90 minute movie. Completely blew me away.

    Looks great.

    • Failed? I don’t know about that.
I will agree that there are some elements here that I wanted in The Avengers but that movie didn’t “fail” at all.

    • This 2:27 minute trailer is to the first Captain American movie, as Age of Ultron will be to the first Avengers…..

    • did you actually watch the avengers, ’cause it’s well over 90 minutes. i just dont see how you can hate that movie, and in the same breath call im3 brilliant. as i said before, i liked im3. i like all of the MCU films, thus far, even the much chastised im2, & 3, but brilliant? not even close.

      • Yeah that is some crazy funny business right there. Somehow Avengers “failed”, but Iron Man 3 was “a great film”. LOL. Oh boy!

  27. I’m Sold, I can’t wait til next year. I could care less about Thor 2: Dark World, just alone Captain America: Winter Soldier has Robert Redford in it. Talk about a Legend, and with Tommy Lee Jones in the last Captain America movie these just keep getting better and better. I might still have hope for Marvel and Avengers 2 yet.

  28. I’m not a big fan of first Captain America, but this trailer gives me very high hopes.

  29. Ugh. I’m officially done reading the comments on this site I promise lol. That trailer was AWESOME, but somehow you geeks ALWAYS find a way to tear something down? Are you really THAT depressed? Does your life suck THAT much where you feel you have to try and suck the joy out of any and everything that crosses your path? Don’t answer that. It’s rhetorical. lol. I HONESTLY do feel sorry for you though, and I hope that one day things change for you? Again…..ugh.

GREAT trailer. REALLY excited for the new Cap’ movie now! Good day an good riddens. Not Screenrant all together, just the comments section. It’s like reading an obituary for fun?

    • ttfn

    • Oh my gosh, I feel the same way. Stubborn fans can never except change and always have to find something to tear apart, no matter how good the franchise they’re into is doing. It’s honestly pathetic in my eyes.

    • +1000 ma man 😀 (Y)
(Before the internet,I thought us geeks were cool. All I’m seeing more more are bunch 8 graders crying for their mama) shame really. :'(

      • @ Ugh
