When Will ‘Captain America 2′ Take Place?

Captain America Movie Sequel Timeline When Will Captain America 2 Take Place?

Marvel Studios is preparing to get started on the production of The Avengers, the ultimate comic book movie that will see all of the studio’s current superheroes join together. For fans, the best part of Marvel Studios’ long-term plans is that The Avengers is just the beginning.

The cast of The Avengers are signed on for lengthy multi-picture contracts. So after we meet Thor and Captain America, and see them partner up with Iron Man and Hulk for Joss Whedon’s big blockbuster, we’re going to see them a lot more, potentially in further solo films and in sequels to The Avengers. In fact, they’re already working away on the story for Captain America 2.

In February, we reported that in Captain America: The First Avenger screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had signed with Marvel to also write Captain America 2. While this may be standard for big comic book movie fare, it shows the studio’s confidence in the first film’s success and the writing/story behind it.

With The First Avenger taking place during WWII and The Avengers jumping ahead to the present era, when in the timeline would Captain America 2 take place?

MTV chatted with Markus and McFeely about the post-Avengers plans and touched on this issue. Markus responds by explaining that they’ve not decided yet, but that they have a lot of options between the two timelines.

“We’re very early, still. This is the fun part — when we can say, “Hey, we can do this!” and everyone says, “Yeah!” No one says anything negative at this point in the process. We have a million great ideas and haven’t thrown any of them out yet. That being said, it’s sort of a weirdly huge opportunity for storytelling in that you know modern Cap through the Avengers at that point, and just by the nature of what we were talking about before, there’s going to be a lot of his World War II history we haven’t shown. We’re going to have two entire timelines to play with.”

McFeely continues, explaining that the direction Captain America 2 may largely depend on the reaction to Captain America: The First Avenger when it hits theaters in July.

“I wonder if the reaction to ["The First Avenger"] will steer us in some way. First, if it does well… Then, if it does well and people embrace the World War II aspect of it, maybe there’s pressure to return there in a large way. But if they don’t embrace that aspect and just love Chris Evans as Steve, maybe there’s less pressure to do that — you can just keep him in the Avengers universe.”

With Sebastian Stan signing  a multi-picture contract as Bucky Barnes, it’s without question that we can expect him to return in the sequel(s), perhaps one day becoming the Winter Soldier and maybe even taking on the role of Captain America himself down the road. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Captain America 2 playing with both timelines in order to introduce historical events that the hero must deal with in the present. This way, they can still bring back most of the cast from the first movie.

avengers thor movie characters cameos When Will Captain America 2 Take Place?

Once The Avengers becomes a reality and this band of superheroes forms, how do further solo movies approach the idea of having one of the characters go off on their own like they do in the comic books? Why wouldn’t Steve Rogers call in a favor from his hammer-wielding Asgardian pal? Says Christopher Markus:

“It’s weirdly the same opportunity that the Marvel comic book guys have been having the last however-many years. All of those Avengers characters have solo comic books. You have to say ‘Captain America was on vacation the day when that solo adventure happened,’ or explain why Iron Man didn’t call all of his super-powered friends when he was fighting that guy. It’s a bizarre problem to have… It’s not really a problem, actually. [Laughs]”

With Iron Man 3 already having a summer 2013 release date, director Shane Black will be the first to deal with that issue of having Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) run off on his own. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some guest appearances and cameos from his friends, though.

Directed by Joe JohnstonCaptain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans stars alongside Neal McDonough’s Dum Dum Dugan, Tommy Lee Jones‘ Colonel Phillips, Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Stanley Tucci as Abraham Erskine, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury,  Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes and Derek Luke as Gabe Jones. As for the sequel, it’s anyone’s guess who will return.

Be sure to check out the first full Captain America trailer and take some time to join SHIELD.

Captain America hits theaters July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. sweeettt

  2. i hope they continue to jump back in forth between timelines, it lends to better stories and deeper character development

    • maybe I’ll get burned for this one but I really enjoyed how they tackled that way of storytelling in Lost, by using using the flashbacks to delve deeper into the characters present day motivations and choices. I could see it work really well for a Cap sequel.

      • Ha as long as they don’t flash-sideways or whatever they did in the last, and worst, season of the most disappointing show of all time

        • In your opinion. You just didn’t “get it” I’m sure.

  3. I’m excited if they flip back & forth between past & present. Better to do it while Chris Evans is still young.

  4. I say bring on the winter soldier!!

  5. i hope its in the present, but what i want to know is where is the leader in the avengers film, because he was created in the hulk film and there is no news on that charactersbut he is there??????????

    • Why would The Leader be in the first Avengers film? He is primarily Bruce Banners enemy, so if anything he will be mentioned in the next solo Hulk film.

      • Something as huge as the Avengers movie needs something like the Skrull/Kree war or Galactus, not the Leader, who is not a threat major enough to focus a mulit film story around…

  6. I love the flashbacks idea. Maybe showing the events leading up to Bucky’s death (if its not shown in First Avenger) and then Bucky’s rebirth as the winter soldier in the next one.

    • i actually like how they handled the Bucky thing in the Avengers :EMH, cartoon, In Living Legend , you see Bucky blown up on the missile. Then in episode 23 i think it is “Hail, Hydra is the title , Cap and the Avengers take on Stucker and try to recover the cosmic cube, in the battle Cap and Stucker go to grab it and nothing happens that they know about, later Hawkeye asks what Cap would of wished for if it had worked and Cap says he wouldnt have changed a thing , they Flash back and you see Bocky being Blown off the Missile, short of an arm, he hits the water and then his eyes open. Great sequence and would mesh well with them having the cosmic cube in the first cap movie

  7. Ha as long as they don’t flash-sideways or whatever they did in the last, and worst, season of the most disappointing show of all time

  8. Hey Vic

did you guys do an article on the updated news about the hulks appearance with a “hairy chest”? or could somone send me the link? Also if you guys ever get the chance can you ask marvel why they didnt stick with the hulk design from TIH?? thank you

    • Tank,

I don’t believe we covered that little tidbit of news.

      • oh well i was just wondering. Thanks anyways! Question still remains…. they should of kept TIH design..

        • Hey Tank, what TIH designs about the Hulk are you referring to? If you have a pic of the designs, you mind sending a link? Thanks.

            • Hey Tank

Thanks. The TIH design is my favorite, and the only one I have seen so far that looks like the Hulk in the comics. Well, marvel does own the rights to the Hulk so hopefully it will be better, but I don’t know how much better you can get than the TIH design. Thanks for the info.

  9. Hopefully Captain America 2 takes place before he gets frozen, that way they can introduce Bucky (if he isn’t already mentioned in Cap 1) and Baron Zemo. After that they can make the film in the present day after the Avengers film took place and they can introduce Winter Soldier.

    • buckys already in the first avenger hes in the trailer telling steve this isnt back alley fights this is war or somthing like that. and when hes cap you can see bucky to the left of him when they burst threw the doors.

      • I really really hope you are wrong, because Bucky should be the child learning from Cap. Not the other way around.

        • nope thats bucky. look it up on imbd. he is younger than cap but hes sickly and looks younger until he gets the super soldier serum. then they look about the same age. they matured his character kind of like how they changed jarvis to be a computer than an actual butler

          • Well I guess that isn’t that bad, a child running around with cap probably wouldn’t have looked good on the big screen, but than again Hannah did pretty well.

            • yea hah but hannah isnt fighting in ww2!

              • True that.

        • It’s pretty common knowledge that Bucky is in the film.

  10. Solo films after Avengers assemble! will work as long as they make it a point to emphasize at the beginning of the Avengers’ film that the heroes are being called from various separete locations, and at the end of the film that they are returning back to their homes and will meet again when they are called to assemble! . That way continuous cameos are not necessary.

    • I just had a flashback to the Superfriends.

      Now I picture a montage of (1) Tony working on one of his cars and Jarvis interupts to tell him Avengers are calling;
      (2) HULK smashing some tanks and his beltbuckle starts flashing;
      (3) Natasha shopping for shoes and her purse starts beeping;
      (4) Thor in Asgard… nevermind

Sorry, I’m not trashing your idea, just funny images in my head that I had to share is all

  11. I still can’t believe all of this is happening! Wow. Thor Capt America movies. The Avengers! I’ve waited years for what’s about to happen very soon. It’s all just so exciting.

    • You truly are a Marvel Lover, MarveLover. I feel ya!

    • I’m with you there, bud! I’ve been waiting a long time for this. This year and next will be stellar!

  12. I think after the first Captain America film, he should be in the current timeline The Avengers are on.

They can make Nick Fury say that they can only work together on his call or something creative.

  13. @Jacks Drinking

Lol yes I am! And there is nothing any doubter or comic overanalyzer can say that will stop my anticipation for ALL of these films. And all of the sequels and spinoffs in the future to come

  14. So wait…After Iron Man 3 is RDJ done as Tony? Is there going to be an Avengers 2? How long can all of these separate franchises go on for with their current stars? So much logistics…

    • I would say no to RDJ being done after IM3 and the Avengers. I know that at least some of the actors committed to 9 picture deals.

  15. the next few years are gonna rock for cbm’s

  16. I hope they are making The Incredible Hulk 2. If so I will be looking forward to it.

  17. Hey Tank, what TIH designs about the Hulk are you referring to? If you have a pic of the designs, you mind sending a link? Thanks.

  18. What may happen, as a result of the current actors “being too old to play the parts” for future films, hollywood may wait a few years before doing another, just so they can introduce new actors to play them. I just hope they don’t try to do more origin stories for the sake of the new actors that will play these roles since their origin is already being done with these films (Cap, thor, Hulk etc.).

Technically, Hulk’s origin was not done in the movie (2008 movie). But the tidbits they showed in the opening credits concerning how Bruce Banner became the Hulk was so well done, I think most people got it.

  19. Captain America hasn’t even been edited, and we’re discussing when the sequel will be released???

    • Heck, considering the trend these days I’m surprised a teaser hasn’t been released yet for Cap 2

  20. How bout some Black Panther and Wakanda? Iron fist and Luke cage?????

  21. Lol Panda, I’m surprised we haven’t heard who’s cast as the villains for Capt America 2 yet,,,

What kind of site is this. I feel jiped!

    • They probably won’t cast the villains until principle photography is done, then they add them in post.

That way the studio can count all of the “for” and “against” arguments on the internet for each villain and add the one with most support. :)

  22. If its in the present, it should be Steve trying to fit in and find a place in modern times because I’m pretty sure The Avengers wont delve into that too much and at some point Winter Soldier should be introduced…

If its in the past, there would be alot more material to play on: more Cap,Bucky & Howling Commandos missions, MAYBE new villains like Zemo?

Biggest question for me is whether or not we’ll see Weaving as Red Skull again in futre sequels or wil it just be that one outing in TFA?

    • Bring on Luther Manning/Deathlok I say!

  24. how can they add bucky?! didn’t he die? anyway spiderman should be in the avengers too
