‘Captain America 2′ & ‘Thor 2′ Images: Winter Soldier Revealed

1 year ago by

Phase Two of Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe is off to a flying start – commercially-speaking – with Iron Man 3, which has already made $1.15 billion at the worldwide box office. This bodes well for the second Marvel movie of 2013, Thor: The Dark World, which will be out later this year, and for next year’s sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Both movies, like Iron Man 3, are set in the aftermath of the events that took place in last year’s summer blockbuster team-up, The Avengers, which made $1.5 billion and was the highest-grossing film of 2012 at both the domestic and worldwide box offices. Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor both had more modest successes, but given how popular the Marvel brand is right now, there’s a good chance that their respective sequels will improve upon their predecessors’ performance.

A batch of new images from Thor: The Dark World have been released by Marvel, providing a high resolution look at Christopher Eccleston in the role of new villain Malekith the Accursed, as well as the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim who serve under him. They also show Chris Hemsworth as Thor in battle alongside Jaime Alexander’s Lady Sif, and there are also a couple of extra photos of Hemsworth between takes.

The Dark Elves look like an amalgamation of several different Doctor Who villains – something along the lines of Cybermen in the middle of through transforming into the Heavenly Host, with a little of the Weeping Angels thrown in. Mostly, though, they look like something that you definitely wouldn’t want to be invaded by, so we’d better hope that Thor, Jane and Loki can devise a plan to fight off Malekith and his brood.

These new images from Captain America: The Winter Soldier are a little less official, and were snapped candidly as the cast and crew shot exterior scenes in downtown Cleveland today.

Captain America 2 Set Photos Reveal Winter Soldier Captain America 2 & Thor 2 Images: Winter Soldier Revealed

Concept art from ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

They include an impressive action shot of a black SUV being blown up, some rather tragic photos of crew members holding up “No pictures, please!” signs, and Sebastian Stan in costume as the Winter Soldier himself, A.K.A. Bucky Barnes.

GO HERE TO SEE WINTER SOLDIER IN COSTUME

-

Winter Soldier’s outfit looks pretty basic, as far as supervillain costumes go, and actually recalls the Green Goblin II’s costume – as worn by James Franco – from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Keen observers will also note that Bucky’s right hand is gloved, seemingly to hide his cybernetic arm. If you zoom in, his fingers even appear to be silver.

Of course, in the comics, Bucky had a cybernetic arm because he “died” in an explosion. In The First Avenger, he sort of just fell off a mountain. Perhaps he landed on his arm wrong?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier also stars Robert Redford as Agent Alexander Pierce, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Anthony Mackie as the flying, crime-fighting hero The Falcon (A.K.A. Sam T. Wilson). Unlike Thor: The Dark World, which looks like it will take place predominantly in Asgard, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is tied more closely to Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D. and earthbound troubles.

Let us know which of these movies you’re most excited for – and what your hopes are for Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe – in the comments.

  1. See, I like the new look for Winter Soldier because I imagine there will be flashbacks of Steve and Bucky and WS will need to be on screen carrying out assassinations so it makes sense to make him look kinda like Cobra Commander did throughout Rise Of Cobra to avoid ruining the big reveal early in the movie.

  2. I can’t believe they messed up Bucky…….just kidding. I think this will be better than IM3. It looks like they lifted the costume straight from the comics

  3. I really hope they don’t suck

  4. I see people aren’t complaining about the directors anymore.

    • I still am lol

      • This film is shaping up to be the best of Phase II imo. Thor II has that potential also, but Jane is still involved so that automatically bumps it down.

        • Best of phase 2? Possibly but thats not saying much. Cap 2 has the chance to be bloated, but neither of us have enough proof to argue a side. I have no faith in the russo brothers i hope they suprise me

          • Did people have faith in Favreau for IM1?

  5. Since when is the Winter Soldier green? Lame!!!

    • What pictures are YOU looking at ?

      • Ummmmm the picture on the screenrant page obviously, his suit is black with a little green in it.

        • go to the doctor

        • Probably something to do with your screen or your eyes… The picture I’m looking at is completely black.

          • if you go the link it shows a suit with green highlights.

            • Green highlights? His entire jacket is freakin’ green.

              • Different monitors have different Black levels, so this could look Black on a lower quality monitor, or one that is not color tuned properly. Since mine is neither (work in Photoshop) the suit is Green. Really though, I do not care what the color is. What sprung to mind is that the nose is crushed/missing, and it would be a #!tch to breath in the thing. Captain was the cheap kid on the block and unless they really step up the budget to compete, WS will be as lackluster.

Thor 2 will be the better of the two, but will it be better than the first, and will the BBC sue for infringement? Will Thor finally get a beam weapon upgrade installed in the hammer, or just get shields? Inquiring minds do not want to wait.

    • Yeah actually his green is pretty similar to a Japanese beetle. And I although it’s dark and possibly hard to tell, compare the pants/boots, to the jacket, to the green bags on the tripods.

  6. I really hope that they stay with the comics as far as winter soldier goes just as long as he’s infact Bucky and not a android or something like that.

  7. The movie should have been “Captain America in a Deadly Game of Paintball”…my reaction to The Winter Soldier’s costume from the headgear to the strange gun he is holding. I wish they made it more like the original. It just seems generic to me. Hopefully it looks better in live action than a still photo.

  8. Horrible. They ruined the Winter Soldier. He looks like the poor mans Cobra Commander in GI Joe: Rise of Cobra.

  9. wow guys come on…. they haven’t even finished production and you are complaining. Did you think that the green is in fact for the added effect (i.e. green screen). Would be like people complaining that Jeremy Renner wasn’t actually shooting arrows but was after the added effects. Both movies are going to be awesome, and I’m really looking forward to Thor: The Dark World to opening up the universe even more.

  10. I bet the same people that are complaining about keeping it more like the comic version, were the same ones that b*tched abt Cap’s suit being too comic. I think Bucky will look amazing as he does in the concept art, but also have their own twist on the character. So pumped for all of the movies Marvel Studios are bringing to the big screen. Hopefully Iron Man will show up a little in GoTG, b/c they said he would return but didn’t state which movie.

    • Hopefully Iron Man will NOT show up in GOTG. Iron Man has already been given enough exposure already with 3 films + “Iron Man and The Avengers”. It would just seem cheap for Marvel to throw the character in just to garnish more attention towards the audience. The only obvious film he would return in would be Avengers 2.

      • @Charlie Hard, Thank you! Someone speaking sense. Put a +1 on that!

The 1st Guardians movie should be preserved with all its cosmic characters and not be tainted.

        • @ Charlie Hard & Guardian Outlaw

Actually, having Iron Man show up in the GotG would be very smart on Marvel’s part. Plus he’s with them now in the comics anyway.

What better way to introduce or draw in an audience to a new group of characters than to have the most popular one, Iron Man, show up?

I don’t really know how they could do it though with everything else going on in GotG. That’s why I was really hoping for a button scene in IM3 that featured Tony flying in space, or at least somehow picking up a signal from space, just something, to tie him to space, and therefore the GotG.

Best case that I can see would be a button scene in GotG that featured IM/Tony like at the end of The Incredible Hulk. Something along those lines. That would be awesome.

          • @Stark, Why do you think he is apart of the team right now?

It’s bcuz the Guardians are fighting near and on Earth. It makes sense to put him on the team in the comics right now.

However in regards to the movie, adding him to the team prematurely while the Guardians are in a different galaxy (no wear near Earth) wouldn’t make any sense once so ever.

If you are actually reading the comics right now, Iron Man can barely take down 1 fighter ship. Now you want him to preform wormholing space travel?

Explain to me how Iron Man will travel 2.5 million light-years (2.4×1019 km) from Earth to be in Guardians of the Galaxy, when he can hardly fight in space.

You got guys like Nova who can take out a fleet of fighter ships. Iron Man will slow the Guardians down. He will be noob status, thus the movie centering around him and his learning. Ain’t no body got time for that, we got a movie about Guardians of the Galaxy to present and not Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In the comics, there is time to see him learn the cosmic ropes.

      • LMFAO and ROFLMAO…. “just to garnish more attention” THAT MY FRIEND IS BAT-SH*T FUNNY, (its garner more attention)
but just for next time here is the definition of both!
I have said it before and I will say it again, SCHOOL IS JUST NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE!
        (Garner)
        Verb:
Gather or collect (something, esp. information or approval): “garner evidence.”

        (Garnish)
        Verb:
Decorate or embellish (something, esp. food).
        Noun:
A decoration or embellishment for something, esp. food

  11. Did anyone instantly think of New Goblin when they saw that costume?

  12. Itll turn out hes not really a soldier or bucky at all, but a homeless man hired by hydra.

    • Haha

    • :D

    • oh Hydra, forgot about that….might explain why his outfit is green.

  13. Thor all the way. Mythology and Eccleston HO!

  14. “Fell on his arm wrong?” Lolol it was one hell of a fall though.

  15. It all looks cool to me

  16. Can’t wait… Thor 2 looks epic and I think Winter Soldier will surprise a lot of people. These movies should definitely improve and expand on the first two.

  17. @Cody “Itll turn out hes not really a soldier or bucky at all, but a homeless man hired by hydra.”

That made me spit out my salad. Thanks buddy.

  18. Maybe they’ll make it like in the comic and we’ll see that Cap’s memories are tweaked or something and Bucky actually died later on.
The costume seems fine. I can see how they’re gonna reveal who he is already

    **SPOILER FOR WINTER SOLDIER COMIC***
Like when Cap first meets him “on the field” and he goes “Bucky..?” and Winter Soldier replies “Who the hell is Bucky?” and disappears under a falling building, in the movie they’ll fight and Cap will punch him or something, damaging or removing the mask partially, “Bucky..?” “Who the hell is Bucky?” BOOM!
    ***End of spoiler**

*Anyway, personally I think they should have waited with that one. It’s a story that had tens of years of “preparation” – as in people really thought Bucky was dead for a REAAAAAAAAAAALLY long time, and then it was real shocker to find out what really happened to him. Now it’s only been a couple of years, no movie in the middle except for Avengers. Too soon in my opinion. I Think they should have waited with it a little more, like maybe after CA 2 and Avengers 2, and just start throwing references to the Winter Soldier’s existence, like maybe Cap catching a slight glimpse of him here and there, but something really subtle. And then on the next movie, BAM! Winter Soldier storyline. That way I think they could also preserve more of the original Winter Soldier storyline, as evidence is showing it’s gonna be based on another storyline as well. Too soon to tell though how much story elements are present of each of them, but it would be a pity to lose so much of this storyline, it was awesome.
Now it’s just wait-and-see! Looks really interesting so far.

  19. Damn, November 9th is soooooo far away. :(

  20. Winter Soldier looks bad @$$!!!!
If you zoom into the picture far enough, you can make out his left hand (the one that isn’t holding the gun) is a silver color…. android arm! :D

  21. am I looking at it wrong? Article says “bucky’s right hand is gloved” but the picture looks like his left hand is. Just wondering

  22. Good lord, I wish Spider-Man 3 had never existed now just because so many people are comparing WS to Harry’s Goblin.

    Oh well.

    • I was just about to mention this as my own observation! I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who thinks they look the same… Marvel should sue!

(I am joking – to all of the stupid people that read this)

  23. Nice to see people listened to the person with the sign reading “NO PICTURES PLEASE!”

    • I think that sign shows an endearing amount of faith in human nature. That faith might be a little misplaced, though.

  24. Are wensure that’s not Harry Osbourne with amnesia?…

Where is hiver board and daddy issues?

  25. Definitely Captain America! I read the winter soldier story and can’t wait to see this on the big screen!

  26. Looking forward to Thor!!

  27. I’ll be buying both on DVD!

  28. Bucky looks like a chick in that picture!

  29. Ok, is it me or does Bucky look like The New Goblin from Spider-Man 3. Also was does Malekeith look a freaking Cyberman?
