One week from today Marvel Studios launches the second chapter of the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor: The Dark World opening in theaters across the UK. Marvel is taking advantage of the occasion and buzz to promote the next sequel on the schedule, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
The Thor and Captain America followups were both showcased by Marvel Studios at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, along with teasers for Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and each debuted impressive footage that emphasized the “different” approach each of the Phase Two installments are aiming to take. For the return of star-spangled Avenger under new directors Anthony and Joe Russo, The Winter Soldier adaptation is described as a “political thriller.”
Yesterday’s release of a new Captain America 2 poster coincided with news that the first full trailer would debut in two days time, and today, Marvel is pushing tomorrow’s anticipated trailer debut with a 10-second teaser trailer seen above. The teaser of a teaser showcases brief shots of Chris Evans back in his modern outfit from The Avengers and wielding his iconic shield (featured in the first Cap 2 poster) while in plain clothes. We also get brief shots of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow (and new hairstyle), the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier lifting off, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and the faint image of Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes suited up as the titular and mysterious Winter Soldier. Unfortunately, no footage of Anthony Mackie’s Falcon, but hopefully that comes tomorrow.
The two new stills from the film come from USA Today and feature Evans, with noticeably less blonde, shorter hair, rocking his new uniform based on the Secret Avengers costume from Marvel Comics. The “stealth” outfit, as its dubbed in the film, plays into the story of the movie. The second shot features Steve Rogers standing over the bodies of traitors who attempt to capture him in a close quarters elevator scene that played at Comic-Con – a sequence we described as one of the most impressive action bits we’ve seen from Marvel Studios to date.
Cap’s next adventure is being directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo off a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and will release in 3D. Robert Redford joins Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson, Toby Jones, Anthonie Mackie, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Maximiliano Hernandez and Georges St-Pierre.
Iron Man 3 is now available on home video. Thor: The Dark World releases November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014, The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on July 31, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.
