Rumor Patrol: Captain America 2 Characters & S.H.I.E.L.D. Connection

2 years ago by

With Captain America 2 securing a 2014 release date – the first Spring release date for Marvel Studios – and recently hiring directors, it’s time for the news and speculation to shift towards characters and stories. More than Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, the Captain America sequel deals with the direct aftermath of The Avengers.

Captain America is now in the modern era and known to the world. He has to become reacclimatized to society after being on ice for 70 years, while at the same time serving as a soldier of S.H.I.E.L.D. to protect it. The sequel is in the very early stages of production, but if the latest rumors can be believed, Captain America 2 may explore the stories of more characters than just its titular hero.

There’s been quite a lot of talk about a Black Widow film for Scarlett Johansson, even some chatter about a Hawkeye spin-off, but neither are realistic options for Marvel Studios to pursue. With their production capacity limited to two films a year (perhaps three in the near future), there’s simply no room for either character to get a solo story where there are so many other projects on the go, vying for those release dates (Black Panther, Doctor Strange, etc.).

Since the team-up formula worked wonders for the studio, expect more partnerships between characters in the traditional solo films. I suggested that instead of going the solo route for Hawkeye/Black Widow, it’d make more sense to include them and their backstories in a S.H.I.E.L.D. film – a project Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) has been name-dropping for years. Such a movie would work wonders to give more screen time to the non-super-powered heroes of the Marvel universe, providing Fury, Maria Hill, Hawkeye and Black Widow more spotlight, while also potentially introducing/including other key S.H.I.E.L.D. members like Ant-Man and Wasp.

Imagine a ‘Year of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, so to speak, come 2014. The following statement was included with the April press release from Marvel announcing the release date for Captain America 2, and if Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man (who’s an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and a SHIELD movie were the other 2014 releases, that would offer an interesting change in pace and opportunities to setup characters for The Avengers 2 come 2015.

From the Cap 2 press release:

The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

As it turns out, Captain America 2 and the SHIELD movie are one and the same, and that tidbit above is our first clue. It confirms Samuel L. Jackson will return, and if his organization is heavily involved – which it is since Steve Rogers works for them – then we can expect others, like Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) to factor in as well.

According to The Playlist, Black Widow and Hawkeye may also be involved in Captain America 2 and there will be some romance between them. The pair of agents shared plenty of screen time with Captain America in The Avengers, and having them fight together again works within the context of a modern-set Captain America story – and would ideally help boost the box office appeal for a film that’s otherwise slightly less bankable than Thor 2 and Iron Man 3.

Those aren’t the only familiar faces expected to return, though. In an attempt to bridge continuity with the rest of the “Phase 1″ Marvel Studios films, General “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt) from The Incredible Hulk may make an appearance, along with several key characters from the first Captain America. At this point, consider these RUMORS and speculation:

  • Bucky could be back as Winter Soldier, a Russian Spy. This is something we’ve speculated here on Screen Rant due to actor Sebastian Stan’s multi-picture contract with Marvel Studios and the character’s recent importance in Captain America comics.
  • Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in Captain America and who has a multi-picture contract, may return to play her own character’s niece, Sharon Carter. Sharon Carter will undoubtedly be the new (save with different hair color?) love interest for Steve Rogers and is another agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • The villainous Dr. Arnim Zola (Toby Jones), who served as the scientist responsible for harnessing the power of the Tesseract/Cosmic Cube for the Red Skull, may return in a new form, perhaps something more familiar to his appearances in the books (see below). Writer Christopher Markus expressed interest in including MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) in Captain America 2 as a villain, and he’s a creation of AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) which we know is featured in Iron Man 3 from recent set photos. It’s conceivable that the characters of MODOK and Dr. Arnim Zola could be combined, or that MODOK’s origins could be connected to Zola’s work.

Nick Fury may get some of his origin story fleshed out as well, which would theoretically lend itself to flashbacks to World War II (which could see other familiar faces returning, including Dominic Cooper’s Howard Stark) since WWII elements are almost an absolute for the Captain America sequel.

From the sounds of it, there are potentially a lot of characters and plot threads to balance, so how much of this is certain – or even accurate – remains to be seen, especially considering that Captain America 2 only just found its directors in Anthony and Joe Russo and the script from Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely is still in its early stages.

  1. Forget modok! BRING BACK THE RED SKULL!! Greatest Villain of all time!!!!

  2. The Marvel universe of films is poised to dominate the box office for the foreseeable future. They haven’t screwed up big yet and from what we’re seeing here, they aren’t about to.

  3. Not sure what to think anymore, I’m the biggest Cap fan but, all this is kinda turnin me off of it, sad day for true Marvelites.
Because, if theirs a movie i could care less for, why waste my time bashing it in the comments? Corny is as corny does.

  4. I’d like a Captain America movie to be focused on Captain America, not SHIELD. It was bad enough that even though he had plenty of screentime in Avengers he got a total short shrift on character development. By pretty much ignoring his situation as a man out of time, and the contrast between where he came from which to him was only a short time before and what life is like now, except for a few brief what were mostly comedy relief moments, it made his motivation for his actions harder to understand, because unlike Iron Man or Thor, who can essentially continue from where they developed to in their previous films, the end of Cap’s previous film put him in a totally different place, which was really not at all explored in terms of it’s effects on him, psychologically and emotionally. And this makes it sound like even in his own film, it would be put on the back burner.

He’s got an interesting and somewhat tragic story here(which can develop into a quite hopeful one as he finds new friends). He’s lost everything and everyone he’s ever known. I read something someone wrote where they compared it to Iron Man I when Tony stumbled through the desert and saw Rhodey coming towards him and how he knew then that he was safe and he was home, he’s even got a favorite cheeseburger to look forward too – Steve woke up in a world where there is to his knowledge nothing like that for him anymore. No one he knows he can trust, even the things that are somewhat familiar, like Times Square is very very different from it was when he last saw it, it sounds different, it probably even smells different. He has to start from scratch. It would not be at all hard to make a really sympathetic and interesting character storyline if someone would bother writing it instead of glossing it over.

    • Oh My Goodness, Nicky!!! I Completely Agree!!! Captain America has Always been one of my Favorites, and they could Totally make an Awesome second movie for/about him, if they Tried. Make it about Him, you know?
I agree with Everything you wrote. >.<. ^__^.

  5. DON’T GO SEE SONY’S SPIDERMAN MOVIE IF YOU WANT TO SEE SPIDEY IN AVENGERS!!! Sony owns the “movie rights” to Spiderman and ONLY if the movie fails would sell the rights back to Marvel Films (Disney Division) allowing Spidey to be in Avengers. Ask yourself if you’d rather see Spidey bitten by a Spider again or see him team up with Thor, Hulk, and Cap? Please spread this message and make it viral so people are informed and will know to stay away.

    • The Amazing Spiderman was a great action-comic-flick. Your full of crap. Spiderman wasn’t a part of the avengers until farther down the line. Let them make 3 Avengers movies without him. Let them make 3 NEW and far SUPERIOR Spiderman films. By the time that has all taken place Sony’s contract will be up and Marvel Studios can buy Spiderman. Then you can have your spidey-avenger time. As far as I’m concerned I hope Marvel and DC pumps out comic book movies for the next 50+ years. I love em. Even the bombs like Ghostrider2 and Wolverine, they are fun! like a comic book is to read/look at.

    • Support Sony’s Spider-man. Disney, Marvel Studios and Sony are interested in putting Spider-Man in Marvel Cinematic Universe. They are interested in putting Spider-Man in future Avengers films.
Oscorp was suppose to appear in Avengers although the building was not yet finished when the scenes that were supposed to be there need to be completed already.

Boycott Fox movies only except X-Men (I’m still hopeful for it :)) if you don’t want to see cloud galactus or badly written F4 again.

  6. Wait. So a Black Widow movie is just not “realistic” because “there’s simply no room” in Marvel’s schedule; but they’re making an ANT-MAN movie? Seriously? Did you READ yourself before publishing?

    And really, MODOK? Lame.

    • I’m sorry, but I would hate to see a Black Widow movie. I see marvel movies for unrealistic powers and stupid costumes. Not for Scarlet Johanson in a tight costume trying to be bad ass. Ant-Man should have appeared in Avengers instead of Fkn Black Widow. If you have Ant Man, you have wasp. I would much rather see that female than black widow.

  7. Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker & Viper(Madame Hydra), or Zemo would be a more fitting choice, also explaining what happened to the Howling Commandos after WWII. Zola would be a good side villain for either, or both:) Not too mention the revelation that HYDRA is still around. They could also set up the beginnings of the NOMAD / John Walker (U.S. AGENT) story arc focusing on Cap’s resentment of the current US Govt. and abandoning the role of CA, that could culminate w/ the return of the RED SKULL in a 3rd film:)

  8. I’m down for all Marvel Studios wants to push out! AND DC(lol, their only successful character: Batman), I’m down for Captain America 2, I’m down for Winter Soldier, FALCON, Red Skull, Cross-bones, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Shield, I’m down for flashbacks and back-story, I’m down for Alan Silvestri’s soundtrack, and I was down with Joe Johnston as Director! However…WHO IS JOE RUSSO? WHY DID THOR2 DROP KENNETH BRANAUGH? Hollywood makes some questionable decisions. When they were making comic books about these characters it didn’t really matter who was drawing them or writing the story, we were entertained none the less because always looked the same. Maybe suit alterations. Now, with the comic-to-film-translation, a certain actor/actress/director can or will only devote so much of there life to the character before moving on with there career. For the comic book artist or writer, that character WAS his/her career. The pointless to worry about how good they will be because they aren’t looking to us ticket buyers/nerds on advice for the story. Not like when the actual comics came out and had the suggestion section in the back for fans. Here is a small list of things I think would’ve made the last comic-to-film decade flow better.
.TERRANCE HOWARD RETURN AS WAR MACHINE
.KATIE HOLMES RETURN AS RACHEL DAWES
    .THOMAS JANE CONTINUE PUNISHER
    .DAREDEVIL/ELEKTRA CROSS-OVER/SEQUAL
.MARK RUFFALO WAS 1ST CHOICE FOR HULK
.KURT RUSSELL WAS NICK FURY 1ST, THEN SAMUEL L IN THE FUTURE
    .DAREDEVIL/SPIDERMAN CROSS-OVER FOR 3RD INSTALLMENT OF DAREDEVIL
.FANTASTIC 4 (1&2) NEVER HAPPENED, JJ ABRAMS DIRECTS, SILVER SURFER INTRODUCED IN PART 1, GALLACTUS IS INTRODUCED IN 2, AND IS NOT A BIG FART CLOUD BUT RATHER THE ORIGINAL GIANT MAN IN PINK AND PURPLE (f*** it), SHE-HULK IS INTRODUCED IN PART 3, ALONG WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM SPIDERMAN
.COMIC FILMS DIDN’T LIMIT ITSELF TO THE # OF VILLAINS/SUPPORTING SUPERHEROES
.GREEN LANTERN DIDN’T HAPPEN, GUILLERMO DEL TORO DIRECTS, PART 1 STARTS IN 1940′S ALAN SCOTT, TIL THE 60′S THEN ITS HAL JORDAN, PART 2 STARTS IN THE 70′S AND INTRODUCES JOHN STUART AND THE FLASH, ENDING IN THE 90′S. PART 3 SHOWS HAL JORDAN’S DOWNFALL AND INTRODUCES KYLE RAYNER, ENDING IN CURRENT TIME
.THE FLASH STARRING BRADLEY COOPER, TAKES PLACE IN THE 50′S
    GHOSTRIDER/DAREDEVIL CROSS-OVER
    NICHOLAS CAGE NEVER DID GHOSTRIDER…
Anyway, just a few thought from a fan.

  9. I love Captain america ^^^^ as you can see and i’d really like the next movie to be based on him!!if they want to tell so much back story about other characters…well…they should go and get their own movies >.< !!!!
I hope the rumor about Peggy isn't true, i think Bernie from the comics should be his new love interest like in the comic books, she is a lawyer and his neighbor.

  11. We already got a bitof background about Hawkeye and Black Widow in Avengers. I’d love to see a basic story around THAT – Hawkeye going after Black Widow, deciding to turn her instead of kill her then they both have to fight their way around the people who originally sent HAwkeye in to kill her. Nothing special but if it were done well could be a really good solid movie and fill out the Marvel Movieverse.

  12. LOVE AVENGERS!! Captain America Rules and i Wish that it wasn’t so SHIELD based, but i’m not too bothered about it because i’d still really like Hawkeye and Black Widow films-if the other avengers get films, so should they!!

  13. I can’t wait to see the sequels of Captain America and Thor… but what I really can’t for is THE AVENGERS 2!!!!!! HELLZ TO THE YEAH! OMG I hope Hawkeye and Black Widow get a romance!!!! Rooting for them, LOVE CLINTASHA BABY!
