‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Gets an Exciting 4-Minute Preview

Published 1 year ago by , Updated March 6th, 2014 at 3:21 pm,

Marvel Studios always goes overboard on marketing its films, which is the reason why Captain America: The Winder Soldier has been grabbing headlines on a nearly-daily basis these past couple weeks – with new trailers, posters, and/or TV spots dropping wherever you turn to look - as we move closer and closer to its Spring release date.

However, the latest preview (a Fandango exclusive) might be the most exhilarating teaser released for the Captain America sequel thus far – which is saying something. It begins with a truncated version of a sequence glimpsed in previous trailers – where Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) lead a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. employees to infiltrate a ship of hostage-taking pirates; much sick, butt-kicking and fighting commences.

Both that extended Cap 2 clip and the conventional trailer montage that follows after very much suggest that The Winter Soldier will play out like the political action/thriller we’ve been promised – albeit, one that just happens to feature superheroes like Captain America, Black Widow and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) battling a dangerous international foe, instead of a more traditional U.S. government agent heading into the fray (a la Jack Ryan).

Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo come from a comedy upbringing (on TV shows like Arrested Development and Community), but it seems that on their first of possibly multiple Marvel films, the pair will prove adept at staging massive action set pieces and close-quarter hand to hand combat sequences. It probably didn’t hurt that the duo collaborated with cinematographer Trent Opaloch, who also shot the well-coordinated action scenes for Neil Blomkamp’s sci-fi flicks District 9 and Elysium.

Beyond that, there are hints that the Winter Soldier script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely – co-writers on Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor: The Dark World – will not only handle Steve’s ensuring moral/ethical dilemma with care, but also remember to continue his emotional arc where it was left off during The Avengers.

That includes what may be a tear-inducing (at the least, heartstring-tugging) reunion with an old acquaintance, whose voice can be heard in the latest preview. Spring can’t get here soon enough…

  1. That was great!!!

  2. This looks 10x better than first avenger. THANK GOD they finally made Caps action sequences actually look cool this time around. The sequence when he throws the shield and it hits the two guys bouncing off the railing on the ship was awesome and exactly what I’ve been waiting for in a Cap movie.

This could be one of the best Marvel movies out of them all IMO.

    • “This could be one of the best Marvel movies out of them all IMO.”

I’ve been getting that same feeling since the first trailer. This only added to the excitement.

  3. Well that was…. Fricken awesome. However, could Scarlett sound any less enthused? She really is a terrible actress.

    • Have you seen Don Jon? She kinda blew me away in that.

    • Do you not understand her character? She’s the best of the best spy for S.H.I.E.L.D., she does this s*** all the time.

    • “could Scarlett sound any less enthused?”

I think that is meant to be a ho-hum attitude like we do this crap all the time and it is easy.

  4. Damn! I shouldn’t have watched that. I need to ignore all promotional material from now on and just wait for this to come out!

    • Totally agree with you Sir. Lucky my internet has been behaving so bad lately (wait… that’s not exactly luck, isn’t it T_T)

      • Like a double-edged sword!

  5. Is it just me or is the shield throwing in this movie looking abit odd? I cant quite put my finger on it. Not the fact of it but like the motion or the way it moves. I dont know.

    • the cgi looks bad when he puts his shield on his back i noticed

    • Its not just you, I thought there was something a bit ‘off’ about the shield throwing stuff on the boat as well
i cant quite put my finger on it either – think you’re right that its something like the way it moves

      • Well im glad im not going crazy

It just seems his whole interaction with the shield movement is off. The putting on his arm motion seems short and akward, the throwing seems odd, etc. Maybe it will look better on a big screen since sometimes when its reduced down to a computer screen it can look odd.

        heres hoping

  6. I tried NOT to watch this to avoid spoiling more than I have seen so far…
    But… I… just… can’t resist this urge! Hahahaha
Definitely gonna need to stay hiatus from the internet for a while after this

Oh, and to those who said marketing spoils too much, as I always say (and many people are starting to feel the same way): Nobody’s forcing you to watch this. You watch at your own risk, just like what I did. This is designed to ‘convince’ people who have yet on board with the movie, so if you want to keep anything fresh… just stay out of these marketing releases.

  7. I think at this point I am done watching promotional materials. I will be waiting in line on April 3, 2014 for the midnight showing. Can’t wait to see Cap II, and thanks SR for all the great content.

  8. Like all of you… I need to stop watching the promotional’s for this move NOW!!! This movie looks fantastic! I don’t want to be spoiled by anything else especailly after that amzing scene on the ship.

By the way, Cap turning around and throwing his shield down to make sure the dude stayed knocked out was classic Cap!

  9. :)-EXCELSIOR!

  10. Well that was just freakin’ awesome. Can’t wait for this.

  11. @ Sandy. I think you meant adept instead of adapt.

    • That I do – thanks for the catch!

  12. Looks good. Not a fan of First Avenger at all so the expectations will not be hard to beat. Looking forward to this.

  13. My big question is: Who is the dead guy under the sheet? Random soldier? Falcon? Fury?

    • Didnt Fury fake his death in the original story line? Im guessing its Fury, only to step back into the shadows and run things since shield has become so mainstream

      • Agree. I think Maria Hill and the powers that be are going to start taking over and become too strict and want more control over “supers” Fury will see this as a bad thing so he will step into the shadows.

I can see Stark ditching the Iron Man gig to support more control of supers. This could lead to a split amongst the team and lead to a loose adaptation of Civil War story arc. Cap gets assassinated and Bucky takes up Cap mantle.

Cap, Falcon, Luke Cage, Black Widow, Iron Fist, sides with Fury and lead a resistance group
War Machine, Ant-Man, Daredevil side, Hawkeye, Iron Man support government group.

  14. Practicing unusual restraint regarding these sort of things and I will skip watching this.

  15. this film is getting negative buzz from those that have seen it. a lot of complaints about shaky cam. i am keeping my hopes nice and low.

  16. Wow! This looks really good.

  17. Awesome!

  18. Wow, that was a billion times better than the first Cap… Just those 4 min way better than that horrid first film… Looks like they got it right this time… Hopefully less laser guns in this one…

  19. BW is fukin badda$$…

  20. Was that Peggy Carters voice? Sure sounded like it to me!

  21. Who else hears his girl (Agent Carter) from the 1st movie but as an old lady?

“That includes what may be a tear-inducing (at the least, heartstring-tugging) reunion with an old acquaintance, whose voice can be heard in the latest preview. Spring can’t get here soon enough…”

Also at NO POINT can I hear the Winter Soldiers voice…after 3 viewings I still cannot hear it! Can someone tell me WHERE it can be heard?

    • Ninjaed! Just above you! It’s gotta be her though, you had the exact same thoughts as me. She will probably cameo as an old lady.

      • Stills showing her as an old lady have ready been released. She will be in the movie and Cap will visit her.

  22. What can be said that hasn’t been said before except that this film will be by far the best of phase 2. I reckon the first CA was a good film, I really like it.

  23. Alexander Pierce is secretly Red Skull who is the boss of Winter Soldier. Simple

  24. I was really bummed that Widow was in IM2 and the Avengers and we never got a clear look at her using the Widows Sting. This rocked! I loved that they incorporated even more Jiu Jitsu into BW repertoire. That leg triangle over the bad guys head as she torques up her middle then slam/flips him around was EPIC.

Love seeing Cap being the badass he deserves to be without the bright boy blue uniform.

  25. looks like I just filled the cup

  26. For sure that sounded like Peggy Carter’s voiceover, but I’m surprised we haven’t seen more of Sharon Carter.

  27. I dont like watching this. its not a trailer.. it´s a simple portion of the movie which is like spoiling the fun.

  28. I have a theory on who the guy under the sheet is. What if it’s the shield-agent we’re introduced to in this clip? We get to see him interact with Cap, they seem to know each other, and it makes sense to introduce the audience to him early on to show that he’s someone Cap and Black Widow cares about. I’m thinking that he’s the person in the car with Black Widow when the Winter Soldier pulls out the steering wheel, and Black Widow escapes (we’ve seen her run away) and this guy ends up being killed (we see their car flipping over).

At the very least I think it’s the guy in the car that ends up dead, and this happens at the same time as Fury’s injured, so Cap and Black Widow are wearing the same clothes standing next to the dead body as they are when standing in front of the room Fury’s being treated in. It makes sense that Black Widow would be sad about it because she survives while he doesn’t, and she may even have been good friends with this agent, since she’s been with shield for years.

So yeah, I’ve never posted a comment on screenrant before, but I wanted to share this thought :)

    • Cap calls him “Rumlow” when he’s giving out assignments, which would make him Brock Rumlow — aka, the villain Crossbones. So no, I don’t think he dies. He turns

      • Thanks for pointing that out! I ended up reading up on Brock Rumlow / Crossbones, and now I’m all excited about seeing him in the movie. You’re probably right about him not ending up dead, but I still think it’s that driver. Cap and Hill don’t seem to care as much as Black Widow, so I’m guessing she’s the only one who knew this person.
