Awesome ‘Captain America 2′ & ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Production Art

1 year ago by

[Update: Check out the larger gallery of Marvel Phase 2 art here!]

Iron Man 3 had a steady stream of conceptual art leak online, revealing many of the Iron Legion armor suits under Tony Stark’s command, but despite Thor: The Dark World releasing later this year, Captain America: The Winder Soldier beginning production and Guardians of the Galaxy shooting late summer, no such imagery has surfaced from the other Phase Two films.

That changes today with the release of the Phase One box set, featuring the home video Blu-ray releases of every Marvel Studios film released to date, headlined by The Avengers. In it is a preview for the next Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the timing of first-look artwork for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy couldn’t be better.

Our first look at the Guardians of the Galaxy core roster came with the official announcement and artwork released during the Marvel Studios panel presentation at San Diego Comic-Con last summer.

From left to right: Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (looks like an Ent from middle-earth), the dual-wielding Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Racoon and the sword-wielding Gamora. Thanks to GeekZenith, we have three more pieces of production art for Guardians of the Galaxy:

The grid lights in the Tron-esque room similar to that of the map room from Prometheus, and it seems to be a scene involving Star-Lord in an area of ruins, or a projection of such an area. The other two feature large starships flying in beautiful alien, yet Earthly, skies, and a few of the Guardians sitting over a table in a bar. That image looks as if it were art for the infamous Cantina scene in Star Wars, except we hope Star-Lord shoots first in this instance. An interesting observation to note is that Drax has a rather different design in this art, compared to the first reveal of his character design. In the art from Comic-Con up top, Drax sports a vest and his skin looked as if it were stitched together thin plated armor, reminiscent of Frankenstein, since he is a dead man re-purposed as a weapon. In this image however, he’s embracing the Marvel Comics design, more muscular, topless, and covered in red tattoos.

Who are the other characters? Is that blue lady Nebula?

The fourth image is the first released art for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the first look at Bucky in the modern era, bionic arm, long hair and all. Movie art couldn’t be more faithful to the comics:

Does Steve Rogers carry his shield around in public while wearing normal clothes? For moviegoers who don’t know about “The Winter Soldier,” he’s Cap’s best friend Bucky who seemingly fell to his death in The First Avenger. In the books however, he was picked up by the Soviets, who fixed up his body (not his amnesia though) and turned him into an elite assassin, awakening him from cryostatis every few years for important missions, hence his modern youthfulness. He has history with Black Widow and that will be explored in the film.

Bonus: Watch part of the Phase 2 Preview featured on The Avengers box set:

  1. The outfit for Steve Rogers is getting lame….

    • He’s in civvies and you think his outfits lame?

    • I honestly hope you can tell that those are probably just his street clothes.

    • Why ? LOL

  2. I love that Cantina-esque pic, and the Cap vs WS pic.

Does anyone here know what other exclusives are on the Phase One 10-disc set?
I already own all the movies, and the set isn’t being released internationally, but it would be nice to know what exactly it is all us fans abroad are missing out on…

    • Ten bucks says that they’re eating alien shawarma.

      • I always thought REGULARr shawarma was alien? :/

  3. I had on a navy blue jacket during that scene…….but still, nice concept art soldier.

    • Hey Steve, thanks for stopping by!

I hope the SHIELD benefits are good!

      • rob new concept art of The Falcon its is based on the ultimate Falcon costume

        • wow, those pics of Falcon are…….humm…………..underwhelming.

They really should have gone with the high tech wing/feather look ala Archangel.

        • Yeap, already on them :)

  4. Awesome article Rob!! PLEASE more of the video, I dont have the $150 for the 10 disc set + I have all of them on Blu-ray so Im counting on ya buddy!! LOL

      • Maybe try writing Vic a nice, complimentary letter and he’ll send it as a bonus this Christmas?

      • WOW when I sawa feweeks aoule WORd it priced a bit more reasonable!!! WTH happened??? did they really want to alienate 99% of their fans???

$230 that is CRAZY, but mr. BIG BUCKS ROB can get it LOL, its a work thing Eh Rob?
Oh WELL I will keep Buggin you till you release more of the cool stuff that is in the set!!
        PLEASE, PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE ROB???

LMAO anyway thanks again love reading ur articles!!

        • Another one coming soon with more cool pics!

  5. That airship is awesome. Is it something out of the comicbook? (haven’t read GotG)

    • Yep! You see a fleet of those ships in the Thanos Imperative event.

  6. In all honesty, Cap 2 and Guardians have been on the bottom of my anticipation list for Phase 2. Seeing that art work gets me incredibly pscyhed. That Cap pic is amazing and Guardians has a Star Wars feel written all over it!

    • Agree with you on the gotg art piece. It does have a star wars feel to it.drax looks serious and commanding. Great art work. Wonder if you can purchase some of these?

  7. Who wants to see a movie with talking raccoons smh? Give me something dark Marvel, not this lighthearted stuff.

    • A violent, gun loving raccoon is light hearted?

      • It’s obvious he hasn’t read GOTG before *shrugs*

        • Yep, seems that way. I’m hoping Marvel’s marketing department help the movie in that case because if people who haven’t read it feel the same way as Macgrath then it could be a disappointing box office turnout and none of us want that.

          • I think the Marvel NOW! issues coming out will help boost the marketing big time. They even have 2 free issues out right now on Drax and Rocket, just so we can get to know them better. The issues can be downloaded for free at the Marvel Digital Comic Book Store. The Gamora issue comes out tomorrow.

            • Cool but again, will the movie going public know about that? That’s my only concern.

            • The Drax one was terrible. It was just an average fight scene, with minimal dialogue, but was there was pretty awful I thought. Nowhere near what Annihilation and the 2008 Guardians were :(

      • Yeah, for some reason people see an anthropomorphized animal and the fact that Disney is the mother company and automatically equate that to a warm and fuzzy cartoon. /sigh

    • To quote said “lighthearted” talking raccoon, “Let’s see how cute you think I am after I strangle you with your own intestines.”

      • I totally heard that in Jason Statham’s voice.

    • You should check out James Gunn’s resume of work. It will give you what you want, friend :)

  8. Bucky looks a little like Cobra Commander in the first GI Joe movie before JGL put on the mask. I was sorta drawn towards the mask covering his mouth and nose though so maybe that’s why.

I hope they deviate a little from that story because it’s boring if they just go shot for shot with the comic.

I also love the Guardians art, can’t wait to see Dave as Drax. Just hope the wait to see who else is starring doesn’t take too long.

  9. Dang!! This is awesome!! The guardians art has a total Star Wars vibe! I love that! I’m excited for that!

Cap looks awesome. I’ve always been a fan of his suits! And Bucky looks sick! I hope he looks similar in the final cut. I like that style.

  10. Spectacar art work, just awsome. Marvel just knows how to do things right!

    • Spectacar?

I’d like to drive one of those, sounds awesome.

      • @ Dazz

        Burned by autocorrect yet again.
        Should by “spectacular artwork”…….

        • Haha, yeah I figured but damn, a spectacar must be invented immediately.

  11. Awesome production art. I especially like the Captain America vs. The Winter Soldier art.

  12. The winter soldier uniform translates really well into reality, so i could see why they wouldnt need to change much. it just basically just leather military clthes with a bionic arm. hope the art is accurate to what they use in the films bc this stuff looks great to me.

  13. guy complains about a raccon……..being light hearted?……….do your research and come back to this article and apologize

  14. Hmph. Perhaps I’m imagining it but the top left of the cantina image looks alot like the Iron Man helmet. I’m sure I’m probably just overtired tho

  15. typo in first paragraph “winder soldier”

  16. hmmm anybody else notice tha the ships in the bottom image look like the novacorps ships a bit…

    • also, nice typo, the Winder solider sounds interesting, does have a big ego?

  17. When you saw the blue Nebula girl, did anyone else think, “What’s an Avatar girl doing in there?”

  18. Gotta love the Cantina Art photo for Guardians; such classic. I can see Rocket high talking about his war stories, right there.

The ship pic looks like one of the ships used in Thanos Imperative and the “star map” picture looks like it might take place at their HQ in Knowhere.

  19. I for one prefer rocket’s more “alien” appearance from the original concept art rather than the cantina one. In the end its really just the placement of the black/white fur but just find it cooler in the too pic. As far as Drax, hard to say which version i prefer, the cantina pic looks more like Bautista lol but the original concept is cool, he’s got a definite zombie vibe going on. Personally, I’m just waiting to see who plays Gamora, she’s the less talked about yet most interesting of the group in my opinion.

  20. Awesome! Marvel Studios has always been great at releasing amazing concept art. I still got that Thor vs Loki art as my background. I’ll probably change it now.

  21. If that picture of Cap fighting Winter Soldier doesn’t say bad@#@ to me nothing will it looks awesome

  22. anyone else’s expectations for TWS just shoot up dramatically?

    • Nope, I already had high expectations anyway because The Winter Soldier story is great (honestly, having read a few Captain America stories over the past year other than Death Of Captain America, it’s the only one I actually enjoyed).

  23. Even before I saw are for GOTG, I had a feeling it was going to have an epic “space opera” Star Wars style vibe. That also fits in with it being “95% in space”! I just want to see crazy aerial and space battles! There’s hardly any memorable and exciting cinematic space battles in the past few years.

  24. Hi there! This is kind of off topic but I need some help from an
