Toby Jones Confirms ‘Captain America 2′ Return

A week ago we posed two questions that fans of the Captain America comics and movies are curious to see answered regarding the roster of characters appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. One involved Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and his potential pet, while the other involved the potential return of Toby Jones, who said at the time hadn’t seen a script and didn’t know if his character of Arnim Zola would have a place in the sequel’s story.

While Hayley Atwell (and likely, the Hugo Weaving) won’t be returning from Steve Rogers’ past for theCaptain America 2, there’s at least one familiar face we can confirm to be joining Bucky (Sebastian Stan) in the pool of WWII returnees.

HeyUGuys caught up to Toby Jones at the Critics Circle Awards 2013 in London over the weekend and were the first to get the Brit actor to happily confirm his upcoming return to the Marvel cinematic universe. After teasing about knowing if he’d be returning or not, Jones concluded the interview with a very happy “it looks like I will be, yeah.” Watch the full interview and listen to Jones’ soothing voice in the video up top.

Jones of course, played Dr. Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger, the lead scientist behind Red Skull’s Tesseract-powered technologies. He was captured by Captain America and his pals, the Howling Commandos, and was coerced into revealing critical info on Red Skull and the HYDRA operations, never to be seen in the film again, leaving his fate unknown.

The Winter Soldier will absolutely be host to flashback sequences where the origins of The Winter Soldier (i.e. the transformation of Bucky) will be explored and potentially, the origins of Nick Fury as well. It is here where we expect Arnim Zola to be reintroduced before making his way into the modern era, assuming he does.

In Marvel Comics, Zola was able to transfer is consciousness into an unusually designed artificial body (pictured above) and we expect if writer/director/brothers Anthony and Joe Russo are bringing Zola back, they may tie it into the return of HYDRA or the introduction of A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) which has an important role to play in Iron Man 3, and hence, the beginning of Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (more on AIM here and here).

The film begins shooting this April and will release in 3D. For more information, check out the latest Captain America 2 rumors.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. I think its just gonna be flash back stuff. They already have too many new characters to worry about, building onto a character from the last film might stretch the movie out too much. Maybe they will set him up to be the villain in the third movie, but i dont expect to see him much in the sequel

    • what i don’t get is that captain america took place in ww2, yet he was in a modern day avengers movie. anyone else catch that?

      • i am wondering if they will go back to ww2 era or stay in modern day. if they go back they better get a time machine cause it will make no sense if they keep going back and forth

        • @haha
In the comics and in the movies, a tradegy at the end of WW2 always ends up with him on ice till the ‘modern’ era(’60s in the comics) that is why he around now adays.

Also, Flashbacks make perfect sense, since a number of Cap’s enemies(and some allies, like the original Human torch or Namor who can be an enemy as well). Anyways anybody with a time machine is related to either Dr Doom, or Reed Richards for some reason….. Also the bulk of the movie will be in modern day, however there will proably be flashbacks for the origins of a couple characters, and certian events

        • @haha. Go back (there’s still time). Watch the first movie again (read: to the end). Quit embarrassing yourself (ensure you know what the heck you’re talking about first).

          • i think haha was being sarcastic. has to be joking. (i hope your joking dude)

  2. that’s gonna be awesome, cant wait to see how he will look as ZOLA

  3. Zola will be the big villain in this movie. Winter Soldier is just the pawn, this is the time of ZOLA!!! I’m thinking they will combine his origin with Modoks for the film. Should be interesting.

    • Agreed. That was one of my theories too:

      • I agree as well, and anybody else think that the android body could be made to look rather ineteresting even in that form(which is slightly better than classic). Now he may not be a major frontline villian in Cap2, however I do see him as a behind the scenes villian, and villian who can be used in the course of multiple films, I am waiting for the confirmation of Baron Zemo or Baron Von Strucker any day now….

        • +1

  4. I hope it’s either flashback, or behind the scene type villiany role, because this film has a lot going on.

  5. Ive said this numerous times……..Sebastian Stan as Bucky/Winter Soldier is a mistake.

    • and many people disagree with you

  6. Sounds good he’s a good actor playing a good villain

  7. They actually showed the blue prints to Zola’s android body in the first movie. Flashed it for a second when Zola is trying to gather all of his papers before Cap finds where they are keeping Bucky. After them showing that I knew that Zola would be back, just a matter of time.

  8. I’d love to see Zola return! Personally I think Guy Pearce in Iron Man 3 will become MODOK but if they do a Zola/Modok hybrid of sortd I’d be k with it although I really don’t think Modok is that great of a villain. I really hope Baron Zemo will appear somehow and I really think this WILL happen now that Zola has been confirmed. I think Zola and Zemo will work together somehow and I predict Zemo and a version of the Masters of Evil will appear in Avengers 2, Guardians will be an intro to Thanos but hé’s more of an Avengers 3 villain!

  9. i want the red skull to come back!!

  10. I am glad Zola is coming back. He really needs to be the villain and Bucky the secondary villain, which I think that is how it is going. Notice as well in the new Captain America comics, Zola is getting a big push!

  11. Not that it makes a monumentally big difference, but has everyone forgotten that Crossbones is also a (confirmed) villian for this movie? Just seems like everyone has passed over him in all the consideration for how Zola and Winter Soldier are gonna fit in as villians in all this…

  12. I hope that we get a flashback sequence involving Cap and The Howling Commandos. Especially if the plot of the movie involves a WWII visit to Wakanda and an appearance by T’Challa’s grandfather, who famously defeated Cap early in his career.
