A week ago we posed two questions that fans of the Captain America comics and movies are curious to see answered regarding the roster of characters appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. One involved Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and his potential pet, while the other involved the potential return of Toby Jones, who said at the time hadn’t seen a script and didn’t know if his character of Arnim Zola would have a place in the sequel’s story.
While Hayley Atwell (and likely, the Hugo Weaving) won’t be returning from Steve Rogers’ past for theCaptain America 2, there’s at least one familiar face we can confirm to be joining Bucky (Sebastian Stan) in the pool of WWII returnees.
HeyUGuys caught up to Toby Jones at the Critics Circle Awards 2013 in London over the weekend and were the first to get the Brit actor to happily confirm his upcoming return to the Marvel cinematic universe. After teasing about knowing if he’d be returning or not, Jones concluded the interview with a very happy “it looks like I will be, yeah.” Watch the full interview and listen to Jones’ soothing voice in the video up top.
Jones of course, played Dr. Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger, the lead scientist behind Red Skull’s Tesseract-powered technologies. He was captured by Captain America and his pals, the Howling Commandos, and was coerced into revealing critical info on Red Skull and the HYDRA operations, never to be seen in the film again, leaving his fate unknown.
The Winter Soldier will absolutely be host to flashback sequences where the origins of The Winter Soldier (i.e. the transformation of Bucky) will be explored and potentially, the origins of Nick Fury as well. It is here where we expect Arnim Zola to be reintroduced before making his way into the modern era, assuming he does.
In Marvel Comics, Zola was able to transfer is consciousness into an unusually designed artificial body (pictured above) and we expect if writer/director/brothers Anthony and Joe Russo are bringing Zola back, they may tie it into the return of HYDRA or the introduction of A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) which has an important role to play in Iron Man 3, and hence, the beginning of Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (more on AIM here and here).
Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014, The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.
