Camelot cancelled Starz Starz Elects Not to Renew Camelot For Season 2

In a season that saw a reemergence of fantasy TV, it is Camelot - the Starz network’s retelling of the classic Arthurian legend – that will be the one to concede defeat. The network has declined to continue production on the big-budget series beyond the first season.

Premiering in April of this year to numbers good enough to make it Starz’s highest-rated series debut ever (1.13 million viewers), Camelot certainly got off to a great start.

The ratings eroded significantly throughout the season, however – and while there was a significant uptick in viewership for the final few episodes – as well as the season finale (reports put the final episode’s audience at more than a million viewers) there were immediately questions as to whether this surge in ratings would be enough for the series to continue.

While the network has announced Camelot will not go on, they have sidestepped the issue of ratings and placed the blame squarely on the fluctuating schedules of the show’s cast.

According to Deadline, scheduling conflicts amongst some of the program’s stars like Joseph Feinnes, Jamie Campbell Bower and Eva Green were substantial enough that, along with other issues, Starz simply decided to throw in the towel.

With Bower recently cast in Screen Gem’s adaptation of The Mortal Instruments, and Green having a role in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, it’s easy to see how it might be difficult to secure the stars for the season’s lengthy shoot in Ireland.

The network announced the series’ end with the following statement:

“Due to significant production challenges, Starz has decided not to exercise the option for subsequent seasons of Camelot with our production partners GK-tv, Octagon Films and Take 5 Productions.”

Another ‘production challenge’ could be the cost of the series in relation to its prospective revenue. With a period drama such as Camelot – which relied heavily on elaborate costumes, props and set pieces – the budget (rumored to be in the millions per episode) likely played a large role in the network’s decision to discontinue production.

Additionally, although it was received moderately well, Camelot was not without its detractors. Many found it to be a poor substitute for Starz’s other hit series, Spartacus, which won’t return to the network until early 2012. Also, let us not forget that Camelot had the misfortune of airing around the same time as HBO’s similarly-themed Game of Thrones, which, in comparison, saw its ratings and acclaim rise with each passing episode – the effect of which likely played negatively on the flailing Camelot.

In terms of the content, the series struggled to find its legs – seemingly meandering through several episodes – unsure how best to translate the abstract nature of the program’s central theme. At one moment Camelot was a romantic period piece, with Arthur torn between his duty as a king and his love for Guinevere, the wife of his champion Leontes (Philip Winchester), while the next moment it was delving into the mystery of Merlin (Joseph Feinnes) and Morgan’s (Eva Green) mystical abilities.

All in all, the parts didn’t create a compelling enough whole.

Though Camelot was not the success it was hoping for, Starz still has plenty of original content to look forward to – starting with the premiere of Torchwood: Miracle Day in July. Afterward, the network has Boss with Kelsey Grammer, the crime saga Magic City starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and the long-delayed second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, entitled Spartacus: Vengeance starring Liam McIntyre as the new Thracian warrior-turned-rebel-leader.

  1. Go go netflix

  2. Link exchange is nothing else except it is just placing the other person’s blog link on your page at proper place and other
person will also do same in favor of you.

  3. Camelot was absolutely the most piss poor writing I’ve seen. No wonder it was cancelled. Arthur was a total sissy, even walked like one. I half expected his nose to be runny. Who selected that wimp in that role? And Merlin was a joke. More of an evil twin than anything else.

  4. I just bought the season one of camelot and I really enjoyed it finished it in 2 days and was hopeing to find out what happend and to hear there is no second season well its just very disapointing I think you should reconsider so I can find out what comes next

    • I totally agree I loved Camelot if they weren’t going to continue it they shouldn’t have ended it the way they did please Netflix pick it up and continue it

  5. Such a shame…. so beautifully acted… such a fresh take on one of the best stories of all time…

  6. Pretty bummed out..I just bought this show 2days ago and was hoping for more seasons! It was not great but it was pretty good! Finished it in 1 night! Hopefullyy they or someone else picks it up…

  7. oww i love Kay. Almost done seqson 1ao as i check for season 2 this is where my search goes. It is a great show and its like a business that has no ending. I still hope for the next season.

  8. I THINK THAT CAMELOT SHOULD RETURN FOR A SECOND SEASON I REALLY LIKED IT , I NEVER LIKE MOVIES OR TV SERIES THAT WERE BACK IN THE TIME AND KINGS AND QUEENS BUT CAMELOT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION AND MADE ME LIKE IT SO MUCH I Was Very Upset to hear that I won’t get to see what happens . And it really capture a new perspective on king Arthur.please I in courage you to bring the series back…..

  9. so i have watched the first season and was looking forward to the next to find out what was going to happen when i then see it has been cancelled, not happy at all i was really getting into it you should really consider bringing it back im sure many people would love to find out what happens next…

  10. and to all these people comparing Camelot to game of thrones are seriously mislead these shows might have an olden day twist to them both but they are completely unique to each other i have watched them both and i like them both only someone who is absent minded would compare the two when the stories lines are completely different….. deerrrrrrrrr!!!

  11. I searched the web for the second season scheduling of Camelot. What a dissapointment the series will not continue. We just subscribed to Starz and watched the first season in two days! Was looking forward to the next season. Perhaps we won’t continue with Starz!

  12. I watch the first season and the writers, once again, have screwed up the storyboard of Camelot. The story was predictable even though this version of Camelot is screwed up with it’s twisted storyboard.

What is even worse, is the casting of this Camelot for Mogana. Morgan as they call her here, is the worse I have even seen. Morgan looks like a young woman yet sounds like a 90 year old woman with her old decrepit-scratchy voice. I even predicted that Gwen’s husband would get killed in battle even on the episode it would happen–everyone saw that coming.

To see Merlin hit Arthur was mind blowing. There is no way that would ever happen without consequences. And Merlin not using magic, I guess that is way for the producers to make a low budget film. Although the acting is very good, and finally they have a good looking Gwen as compared to the one on Hulu’s Camelot, I found the story entirely not surprising and predictable.

  13. The quality of actor in the series was really let down by the writer who could have done so much more with that cast. Claire Forlani, James Purefoy and Eva Green are all really top class, to get them in one series was a feet, especially Eva who seems to be destined for stardom. Alas, I cannot see it ever coming back to screens, a new direction and brave writing could have saved it. None the less Eva Green and James Purefoy would would be just too expensive these days if you are not guaranteed views.

  14. This is an awesome show! My roommate got it from Netflix, and I just watched the whole season today. Like, I could not peel myself away from the magic on the screen one mesmerizing episode after another until I saw them all… I cannot BELIEVE Camelot won’t get renewed!!! I mean, there has been a hugely increasing interest in historical fantasy, with The Game of Thrones obsession and now the Vikings… The Vikings first season passed barely noticed, however now you can’t even get it from Netflix due to “extremely long wait.” Why not for Camelot?

    • if you’re interested In watching the Viking they have all episodes 1 2 and 3 Go to IMDb tv
and they have all the episodes

  15. Me and my husband loved this series we are sad to know we will never see the rest :(

  16. This was a great show, it was put together so nicely and it had neon the edge of my seat the whole time. I just finished season one and went online to search for season two and sadly found that there was never a season two or any plans to do so. I believe that this show will have great audience such as The Tudors. I even thought of subscribing to starz only to be able to continue watching.

  17. I am very disappointed to learn that season one is the only season for this great show. Loved the casting and acting. Please bring it back.

  18. BRING THE SHOW BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Not at all happy about show being canceled…the acting was superb and I was glued to the screen! Was really looking forward to season 2..don’t like any other series on Starz with the exception of DaVinci’s Demons.

  20. I loved Camelot… so disappointed. BRING IT BACK!

  21. I’m very disappointed Starz cannot commit to finishing a series when they start it. I enjoyed Camelot and The White Queen and really only kept my Starz subscription for these series. I’ll be canceling now-if they can’t commit to finish what they start I’m not committing to a subscription!!
