Movie Posters: ‘Cabin in the Woods’ & ‘Looper’

Next week’s release, The Cabin in the Woods, sees Joss Whedon (The Avengers) and Drew Goddard (writer of Cloverfield) try their hands at inverting the overdone slasher horror genre. Similarly, later this year, cult indie filmmaker Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) will offer what sounds like a refreshing take on the time-travel sub-genre with Looper.

A Mondo-created one-sheet for Cabin the Woods has surfaced online, to help round out the film’s marketing campaign. Meanwhile, today’s Looper poster kicks off the film’s official promotional campaign – with a handful of trailer vignettes/previews due out early next week (yay?), to hype the release of the film’s first theatrical promo.

The Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods‘ release has been pushed back so long that many of people involved with the project (including star Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and co-writer/producer Joss Whedon) have become bigger names in the meantime. Nonetheless, early buzz around Drew Goddard’s directorial debut is pretty fantastic, and the film’s promos to date have teased an ingenious spin on horror titles like Friday the 13th and Evil Dead, among others.

Today’s M.C. Escher-inspired Mondo poster for Cabin in the Woods, is just icing on the cake that is this film’s effectively unconventional (and enigmatic) marketing scheme.

Check out that Cabin in the Woods one-sheet below (followed by the film’s official logline):

Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen. If you think you know this story, think again.

Looper

Similar to Cabin in the Woods, Looper has been generating a lot of enthusiastic buzz from pre-release screenings – along with a great response to the teaser trailer’s premiere at the 2012 WonderCon, where the footage from Johnson’s sci-fi flick reportedly managed to hold its own against that shown from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (as far as the crowd response went). Now that is saying something.

Those who were impressed by the recent Looper images – revealing the prosthetics Joseph Gordon-Levitt wears to portray a younger version of Bruce Willis’ character – should also like the look of the film’s official poster. That one-sheet also utilizes the “disintegrating man” visual that’s been increasingly popular in sci-fi movie banners of late (see: Source Code, Total Recall).

Check out the Looper poster (followed by a synopsis):

When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination.

Looper opens in U.S. theaters on September 28th, 2012.

For some unexplainable reason I Really want to see the Cabin. Judging by the trailers it looks like a pretty twisted film. I thought it was just going to be a regular old horror movie but it seems to be more than that once more of the trailer. I Very picky with movies I see at theaters, Extremely. So hopefully this doesn’t disappoint…

I would say this is gonna be another typical horror movie with a good twist that they dont fully develop and ruin! Why else would a horror movie have to have sex scenes in a movie about murder?

It seems like Cabin Woods is the New Version of Evil Dead to me.

the Cabin poster is cute, but I find the “deconstructed cabin” first poster better. I’d put that one up in my home-theater room.

I’ve been waiting for a long time for CinW, so along with Prometheus, it’s one of the two films this year that I’m most excited about.
