A Dollhouse may have mindless residents hang out until their next “therapy session”, but with a little Cabin In The Woods, you can get some nice peace and quiet in the mountains – in between screaming bloody murder and running for your life! Now there’s a vacation spot! Leave it to Joss Whedon to create a nice escape spot… literally.

We already noted a while back that Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins were added as cast members for the Joss Whedon vacation spot.

But now we add a few more younger cabin mates to the fray, and we have ourselves a full blown party… or massacre. The five new faces in the cast are Kristen Connolly (Revolutionary Road & As the World Turns), Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), Anna Hutchison (Go Girls & Power Rangers Jungle Fury), Fran Kranz (The guy who wipes the actives minds in Dollhouse), and Jesse Williams (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2).

Whedon is happy about his cast because he feels that each one is unique in their own way, and that the group is more than the sum of their entirety. That, and he can’t wait to hurt them in the movie. Good ‘ol Joss.

I’ve been hovering… OK, maybe stalking news on Whedon and he’s been nurturing this project for quite a while. Finally around October of 2007 I saw news that he was pitching his idea… along with a few others to see what stuck with a studio. Whedon has been pretty patient pitching his project and waiting for a green light, and mid last year he made note of it at Comic-Con 2008.

In the meantime, Joss had

  1. Received sage advice about his project (You’ll laugh that this one)
  2. Kept us in the loop about the project.

See if you can do the “math” here: The project falls under the MGM umbrella. MGM owns a piece of Tom Cruise’s United Artists. So in some fuzzy way I haven’t really tried to understand, Cruise can be deemed a partner with MGM. Somehow, the partner, Cruise felt compelled to advise Whedon (that is, make suggestions) on where the “Cabin” project should go. Darn, too bad the project was already in pre-production at the time. I’d love to have been a fly on the wall for that one.

As far as Whedon keeping us up to speed on project developments, he had these inside spoilers to dispense to us back in early February about the project:

  • A person will have an emotion.
  • Two people speaking, or “dialogue,” may occur.
  • A bunch of different people will play the part of Bob Dylan.

I just love that kind of insider information… what more could we want?

Right now, Whedon and company are keeping the lid tight on this project. Nothing is leaking out of the studio, which is why we haven’t heard much about this project. But what I could discern about the project is the following quote from Drew Goddard:

“It’s genius, it’s funny, it’s got a harder and darker edge, but it’s also got classic Whedon qualities,” said Goddard.

“It’ll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time. It’s its own sub-genre, ’the cabin in the woods’ and this is sort of our take on it…fresh and new.”

Cabin In The Woods is written by Drew Goddard & Joss Whedon, directed by Drew Goddard, produced by Joss Whedon and is slated for a release date of February 5th, 2010.  Joss Whedon must be very happy with the idea of a release date around Valentines day.
