Burton & August To Work on ‘Monsterpocalypse?’

Director Tim Burton and screenwriter John August may work together yet again on the monster-happy film adaptation of the board game Monsterpocalypse.

Screenwriter/director John August is currently engaged in negotiations with Dreamworks to pen their film adaptation of the board game Monsterpocalypse. The studio is also eyeing Tim Burton – who frequently collaborates with August – to act as a possible creative consultant.

The Monsterpocalypse game revolves around a collection of Japanese monsters (“kaiji” or “strange beasts”) as well as mechanical robots and extra-terrestrial invaders, that wreck havoc on an ever-changing cityscape.  Think Destroy All Monsters for the Battleship crowd and you’re on the right path.

Unlike Ridley Scott’s Monopoly movie, the plot for a cinematic adaptation of Monsterpocalypse requires less of a stretch of the imagination.  If August does sign on to write the film’s screenplay, he will most likely be concocting his own version of the classic “monster attacks human civilization” story that has been at the heart of every Godzilla movie ever made – not to mention films like Cloverfield and (probably) Super 8.

If both Burton and August come onboard for the Monsterpocalypse movie, it would mark the fifth joint effort for the two, after Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and their current 3D feature-length treatment of Burton’s 1984 short film, Frankenweenie.  Burton the filmmaker is known for working with the same individuals many times over and will do so for certain on his Dark Shadows adaptation, a project which August and (shockingly) actor Johnny Depp are already attached to as well.

Do Burton and August make for a dream team of talent, regardless of which project they work on?  Well, Big Fish was arguably one of Burton’s best films of the last decade while Charlie and Corpse Bride were also relatively well-received.  So the two seem to have a decent – if somewhat unspectacular – track record.

What do you think?  Is Burton at his best when working with August?  Sound off in the comments section below.

We’ll keep you updated on the development of the Monsterpocalypse movie as more news comes our way.

  1. Burton has always been good so I dont think he needs August but they do make movies more special. So I think he repeatedly works with the same people like depp and august is so create that same magic. For example alice in wonderland made a billion dollars which i didnt see coming. Burton and all his collaborators are doing something right

  2. Give me some mega monsters, big, bad robots and aliens all fighting any day! I’m in!

    • …And give me Tim Burton directing it!!!

  3. I have great respect for both artists, individually and when working in collaboration with each other. Although, the brain boggles when thinking of the mind blowing content which would erupt with them both putting IN 100% of their unleashed artistry towards a collaborative work instead of downsizing to 50/50!!

  4. I’m curious about the budget for this ripod/monsta mash? A hundred or one and a half hundred Mill? I can’t help think “Evangelion” when I see this…
