[UPDATE: Buffy creator Joss Whedon has responded to the news. Check out his comments below.]

There have been rumblings of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie reboot for a couple of years now. The last time we heard, original rights holders Fran Rubel Kazui and Kaz Kazui were interested in developing a new film that would take the franchise in a “darker direction” – and they were doing it without the involvement of Buffy creator Joss Whedon.

When the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series debuted on television in 1997, it was more than a quirky cult hit – it also acted as vindication for Whedon, whose original vision for the 1992 film of the same name had been severely compromised by Kazui Enterprises.  When the movie reboot rumors surfaced, fans were understandably apprehensive about the property reverting back to Kazui, the same people who had so poorly mishandled it in the first place.

It was later reported that Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) had been offered the lead role of Buffy and that TV series star Sarah Michelle Gellar might make a cameo appearance. Thankfully, this never materialized and the project seemingly vanished.

Well, now it’s back – Warner Bros. has optioned the rights and a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie is officially underway. Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the reboot alongside Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment (How To Train Your Dragon, The Departed).

The script is being written by Whit Anderson and evidently this new take on Buffy‘s mythology was enough to spark Roven’s interest:

“Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy…There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen. We’re thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be.”

I know I won’t be alone in declaring that I’m not terribly supportive of this. Whedon has such an offbeat and specific sense of humor. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show had just the right balance of scares and laughs and it did it all with a pitch-perfect tongue-in-cheek attitude. It’s an incredibly difficult tone to achieve. In fact, look no further than the original Buffy movie for an example of how easy it is to screw up.

I’m just not convinced that this is a property that needs updating – especially when new generations of fans continue to discover Whedon’s TV show. The concept -a high school valley girl becomes a hardened vampire slayer – meshed well with Whedon’s unique style of writing, but I’m not sure how it’s going to hold up with a “darker” approach.

Update: It looks like Buffy fans aren’t the only ones saddened by this news. After the story broke, E!‘s Kristin Dos Santos sent an email to Joss Whedon asking how he felt about this development. Here’s his reply:

Kristin, I’m glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

Meanwhile, Bones creator Hart Hanson just tweeted this picture of Buffy alum David Boreanaz’s reaction to the news:

What do you think? Is Buffy the Vampire Slayer ripe for re-imagining or should they leave well enough alone?

  1. Go for it, I’m tired of all this Twilight BS. Yay for Vampire Slayers!

    • I agree, Twilight is soooooo lame and has no slapstick…boring!

  2. why?

  3. I say Leave it alone, why mess with (almost) perfection

  4. How disappointing. While I’d love to see Buffy on the big screen, I do love the fact that the series has no timeless quality to it, in the fact that I’m sucked right back into the heart of the ’90s every time I watch it.

Plus, since the movie was such an epic fail without Whedon, what makes them think this time would be any different? Don’t they know that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is synonymous with Joss Whedon? Who even thinks, ‘Oh “Buffy the Vampire Slayer?” Yeah that involved Fran Rubel Kazui and Kaz Kazui right?”

    • Joss wrote the movie… Just pointing that out… I do agree with everyhing u said though :0)

      • Joss wrote the first draft of the script not the second and had no say in the film after.

  5. I think I speak for a lot of folks when I say: no Joss, no dice.

    • I second that. The first movie was just awful, buy Whedon made it into one of my favorite shows.

    • THIS.

  6. Total lack of imagination alert!!!! F^€k off and die Hollywood. There are real talented people out there with original ideas but they ain’t welcome in your concentration camp of crap ideas.

    • Preach on DSB!! There is no need for this

    • Would there be as much dislike had we been here when they were creating the series based on a movie?

What is the difference? (just playing Devils Advocate) It was a movie (decent) and it was over why milk the story on TV (changing the mythos from what I understand so far)? Especially since the movie was much better then what I have seen from the series…

      • AND OMG! Who is that with the choker up there? Is that the timid nerd girl? I thought she was the best part of the first two episodes….

      • Aknot the difference is the TV show was created by the guy who wrote the first draft of the movie script.

  7. Will there be one for harry potter? What do you guys think?

    • Shhhhhhh! Enough Potter!

    • Does every topic have to be about Harry Potter?

  8. People make Joss Whedon out to be one of the greatest minds of hollywood. While I agree the guy has talent there are plenty of people out there that are just as and even more talented them him. If he not involved I doubt it makes a difference.
He did a great job with the Buffy tv series and he will always be remembered for that. But was Buffy the tv series perfect? NOt by a longshot.
I think a fresh perspective on the franchise might be interesting if they dont twilight, which I doubt because the whole BUffy/Angel thing will likely have the same affect

    • I don’t think Joss is perfect. He’s pretty hit or miss actually. But Buffy was such a great match for his voice and style. A perfect TV show? Of course it’s impossible. Anything that runs seven seasons or more is going to have some ups and downs.

Sure there are more talented writers and directors out there. Some that might completely get what made this show work as well as it did. And if one of them signs on, I’ll be a bit less pessimistic.

Until then, saying it doesn’t matter whether or not Joss is involved… well, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

      • No he isn’t perfect, look at Dollhouse lol. But still why this and say not Angel, I’d rather see that on the big screen, picking up where the series ender left off.

        • Yeah I always enjoyed “Angel” more.

          • Angel was what got me into Whedon in the first place. It hurt to see that one cancelled prematurely. I’d agree that it’s the superior show.

            • Yeah it was, though the Gunn character was wearing on me towards the end.

              • Yeah- he was pretty irritating after his Wolfram & Hart upgrade.

*Possible spoilers ahead* Did you happen to check out the “After the Fall” comics that picked up after the series finale? The ones I read were a little disappointing (not unlike Buffy’s “Season 8″ comics) and Gunn had become a vampire.

Guess Whedon had a change of heart about the character because I remember reading that as far as he was concerned Gunn died in that alley during the finale.

                • I haven’t Chris. looks like I’m heading to Borders this weekend again lol. I was pissed off that Wesley was killed though.

                  • I did hate that they killed Wesley, but his death scene, when Illyria pretended to be Fred, was a deeply sad and touching moment.

                    • I agree. Sadly, if there was an Angel film made, Loren wouldn’t be part of it(if they had any respect for Andy)

                    • Loved that scene. And the earlier episode where they’re all racing around to find a cure for Fred. Man was that a gut punch.

                    • That entire Fred story was so emotional. I’m not afraid to admit I cried during that scene and in the scene when she’s dying and say’s “Please Wesley why can’t I stay” and then dies. Ugh sad just thinking about it. Poor Wes just when he finally gets the girl he loves she dies.

                  • I actually liked Angel After the Fall, but the comic after was awful. I thought AFter the fall had some great stuff and I thought it stayed true to the characters it just fell apart when they started Aftermath.

Buffy Season 8 was just awful it was terrible Buffy suddenly became gay out of no where it was so out of character and pointless. The characters all changed from where they left off and randomly became some under ground monster fighting agency with state of the art tech.

        • I loved Buffy, but Angel was a superior show by far.

        • they did pick up in comics

    • See, the one major problem with your theory is that he CREATED the idea. Whether or not you like him or the show, he IS necessary, at least in a consulting capacity. His imagination birthed Buffy, and his imagination raised her. Without him, it is NOT Buffy. If it is even viable as a property, it must, by definition, be a different property. If Whedon were dead (like Ian Feming and Bond), this MIGHT be a possible option…after all, many concepts evolve without their creators. Batman goes on though Bob Kane died awhile ago.

      This should not be.

  9. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is synonymous with Joss Whedon?”

    And that’s a good thing?

    Let the angst fly!!

  10. If this movie comes out, no good will come of it. People will either lump it in with the Twilight crap, or the movie will bomb and the supporters of Buffy who stay away will just be adding to the evidence that the show was never as popular as the vocal minority claimed it was.

  11. There’s is only one way to make a buffy movie, and that’s to bring back the original cast, which isn’t impossible. The problems come from trying to include James Marsters and David Boreanaz, because there is no hiding the fact that the have aged. And vampires dont age.

Unless the original cast come back, this is like a broken stake: it’s pointless.

    • Everyone with the exception of Luke Perry

      • I’m assuming you’re kidding, since Luke Perry was in the MOVIE cast, not the show cast. :)

    • Well there is an excusse for one of them the prophecy means one of them could be human. The other is screwed though to be honest I think James has aged very well and with a little make up could still easy play the part he was much older than he looked in the entire show.

  12. I’m saying no for a whole different reason. I didn’t like the movie and I didn’t like the show. Not a fan of it. But I’m not really a fan of anything that’s like buffy. High school setting witha cute main character who is a vampire slayer. Yeah I’ll pass on all of it

  13. I say, do a movie BUT I want to see the TV show cast!! And have it be so dang good that it blows Twilight out of the water. Besides Buffy came first, well before shiny vampires and hunky werewolfs.

  14. I am on the fence about this, for one, vampires are in every movie it seems like, twilight sux, so why make another movie to kill off the genre?

but on the other hand, young people think that stephanie meyers created vampires and werewolves (someone actually wrote to the people who did “wolfman” with del toro, saying how dare they make stephanie meyers werewolf a monster… I didnt make that up either…), so seeing them scream when edward gets stabbed in the chest would be funny as hell!!!

  15. I love Joss whedons reply to the news…thats the humor you expect from Joss. The man is a genius (Yes even Dollhouse, slow to start in s1 but season 2 and the epitaph episodes were briliant)

Buffy/Angel to do this day remain my favourite shows of all time…and I think that is in large part thanks to Joss’ input, wit and unique style. On principle I am opposed to this but curiousity will no doubt get the better of me and I will see it

But I am very pessimistic, that without joss, that this will be any good

  16. No Joss no Daniel.

This just sounds like an incredibly awful idea.

I have loved every one of Joss’s show except Dollhouse that was awful.

    Buffy was good
    Firefly was amazing
    and Angel was near perfect.

Not to mention Serenity which was a fantastic film and very underrated it’s one of my all time fave sci fi films ever. I know Vic agrees there as well. I’d personally like to see some more of the firefly crew.

    • There NEEDS to be another Serenity movie!!!

  17. I love that Joss’ response plugs his own achievements: “Toy Story” risiduals and his unique take on “The Avengers.” That’s funny stuff. Plus his line “…feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths -” just describes Hollywood right now to a T.

  18. Why Buffy? If there is always suppsoed to be a slayer why not notch it up a bit from campy and make it along the veins (see what I did thar!) of the original movie?

I mean stake (hahahahaha) a claim and make a new movie series being semi serious something like an Indian Jones thing.

  19. no this was one of my fav shows growing up.. and how cud you have buffy without all the old gang…. leave it alone its not needed and i dont want it i love that anytime i can snuggle on sofa and jus watch sarah, david, tony, alison, nic, james, good times…

  20. With Joss? I’m at a loss.

  22. I don’t know where I got the idea that he would have been involved, but now that I know that Whedon isn’t in it, I have to retract my original opinion. I feel that this project, like so many recent others based on horror fiction, will go the dark and broody way of Twilight. Remember when Vampires looked like Spike and Angel? And didn’t sparkle? Those were good days . . .

    • Yeah, this is clearly, CLEARY some exec seeing the crazed re-action of tweens to Twilight & thinking: Hey! That should be our money! And in a way, he’s right. All the hype should’ve gone to Joss & his original Buffy (who kicked vampire butt instead of adopting some weepy, creepy submissive role & letting them stalk her!!) but, alas, this is not the way it’s gonna go. Instead they’ll probably morph our bright, witty Buffy into a dim-witted Bellaesque character & the new Angel will look like he has to go to the bathroom all the time.

  23. hmm

  24. This is a sad day for Buffy fans everywhere. If this movie doesn’t come out right it will be a permanent blemish on the series as a whole. They need at least some original cast, maybe from both series (Angel & Buffy) along with the original movie cast. This was an epic series with a very delicate balance of humor and horror and it’s easy to mess up. They should also review the scripts from the TV series to allow for some inside jokes etc. I don’t know but it better be really really good or this is just one more pissed off fan!

    • I totally argee with Shaun, I was a massive fan off BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SERIES an still am now even many years latter after the series aired, an new genration still love an adore the Series my Daughter loves it just as i did when it began airing from 1997-2003 an i think Sarah Michelle Gellar should reprize her role as Buffy cause along with Whedon Sarah amazing acting as actress made buffy the charcter we all love an bring back the rest of the original cast cause you can’t have Buffy without the her trusty Witch Alyson Hannigan,Nicholas Brendon & the rest of the Scooby’s N James Marsters an David Boreanaz as the to vampire’s with a soul, Anthony Head as Giles they all know how to play the character but mainly play them the way we all loved them an At least they should allow Joss Whendon some say an take on were the movie goes etc cause i can’t see a great Buffy movie without the Original cast an Joss Whedon take at least an if made bad could give buffy a bad name for futher Genaration

  25. Jeez. I knew some of these Hollywood people were stupid but that’s pretty much a new low in stupidity. At least let Joss write the script.

Really I just don’t want a reboot. The tv show explored pretty much everything about the character and these bozos aren’t going to find anything new to do with her. It’ll just be a mess.

  26. How depressing. I always wanted them to do a movie to help wrap up the loose ends with Angel, but I don’t have a good feeling. The series was ahead of its time, and does not need updating!

  27. Well I know one film I won’t be seeing and I’ll tell everyone I know the same. I hope the film gets shut down before its finished. Disgusting.

  28. this is a complete disaster, how can someone else write or resurrect something which they had no part in? Joss needs to save this and if the producers, and people incharge at warner care about the so called HUGE fan base they would pay him as much as he wanted to do this. also how can it be BUFFY the vampire slayer without SMG? she is buffy, at least to loyal fans, anyone else trying to be that role will as said above blemish the buffy franchise instead of rebooting it, also reboot? seriously?

  29. If this is going to be done whedon needs some input, im not a fan of the idea but could be fun to see a recreation of buffy which will be so much better than the awful twilight saga. New buffy film has got to be amazeing with a brilliant story that is not about moody teens moping around, buffy was quarky, funny and stunning with the greatest support cast, i cant stress enough that a new buffy film has gotta be an epic.
