There’s been plenty of talk about the future of the X-Men franchise in recent times leading up to and after the financial success of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to kick off the summer of 2009. That hefty $85 million opening weekend helped push a Deadpool spin-off for Ryan Reynolds into motion as well as the early development of other spin-offs, prequels and even a sequel to the X-Men trilogy. That’s right, an X-Men 4 is in the early stages of planning.
In addition to the speculation of future installments to the franchise, there’s been buzz about the return of one of the folks responsible for helping kickstart the live-action series of X-Men films, Bryan Singer. We know that he’s interested and that X-producer Lauren Shuler Donner is too. But just how realistic is it?
As of this morning, it seems much more likely that this will come to fruition…
At the South Korea’s Pusan International Film Festival this morning, Bryan Singer revealed that he is in fact in talks with Fox Studios about a possible return to the X-Franchise, something that was hinted at back in June when he talked about his love of the franchise and the possibility of doing another.
This is what he said back then:
“I’m eternally intertwined with X-Men now… What takes an audience four hours to watch – the first two movies – took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it….It’s a shame.”
“It’s weird for me to watch it [the third movie], because I’m so close to the universe. And also Brett [Ratner] is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe.”

This morning, Singer’s latest words on the subject seemed very promising.
“I’m still looking to possibly returning to the ‘X-Men’ franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it,”
“I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast.”
The director also touched on something that I think is very important about what made the first two X-Men movies stand far above X3. Singer said that with these movies he love to “trick audiences into thinking they’re seeing fireworks, but they’re learning about themselves and listening to what I have to say.”
“The excitement about working in science fiction and fantasy is — the stories, if they are good, are about the human condition.”
Let’s think about which movie Singer could direct if he were to helm another X-Men movie for Fox Studios. We know there’s a Magneto film in development but that will likely be helmed by David Goyer. Singer did a fantastic job of introducing Magneto’s origins as a child whose family was torn apart by the Nazi regime in that powerful opening sequence of the first X-Men.

I wouldnt want to see the Sentinels used that way of controling mutants. I wished Henry Gyrick from the first film wasnt killed off, he could played a much better role in a future film especially after X2 and try to finish what Stryker began. But they could still use Bolivar Trask from X3 to play a part in the Sentinel story. Afterall he did create those robots in the comics along with Master Mold.
@ 790
Lol whatever. id have to say that was the answer i was expecting. Glad we cover that. lol
I would want Singer to rectify the deaths of Professor X and Cyclops in 4.
Cyclops’ death occurs off screen. So you could easily just retcon that to be that he was just missing and not dead. He is way underutilized as a character in X2 and X3, so I hope that Singer realizes his potential.
Bringing back Patrick Stewart would be more difficult since he is in some other dude’s body now.
A truly great director can make even the most pathetic actors shine.
AND
A great director can create magic from a mediocre script, but a really bad script… everyone suffers from a really bad script. Fans most of all.
@790
Seriously, get off your high horse. I agree with you that X3 was horrible and T4 was so full of plot holes it wasn’t even funny… well, it was kind of funny actually… anywho… But that’s his opinion. Do you need me to remind you of how unpopular some of your opinions on movies are?? Stop talking like you “know better” than him. You both have your opinions, you’re both right in your own mind, that’s the end of it, geez. If you’re allowed to say that The Spirit and T3 were good, he’s allowed to say that X3 and T4 was good. And I’m allowed to say that ALL of those movies sucked, lol. Nothing personal man, but all of this attacking of his opinion thing is getting old, and he’s obviously getting defensive over it, and there’s no reason to have to get all defensive over your opinion… Nobody’s wrong, you’re ALL right in your own mind and that’s all that matters! Now let’s hold hands and pick flowers and not shower and sing happy songs! lol just kidding about that last part…
@chrisj
I’m not really a fan of the comics, or any comics actually, I just love comic book movies for some odd reason… Anywho, I didn’t read the comics, so I can’t suggest any villains or anything. But even though most people didn’t like X3 because of how it doesn’t follow the comics, I actually found that even without knowing about those inconsistencies, X3 was a pretty poorly made film. Just my opinion, but a lot of the story and the actions from the parties involved don’t really seem logical… But anyway, that’s why I didn’t like it, but of course, that’s just my opinion. I don’t know how they will make X4, they already introduced every character there is almost, lol, and they killed off Xavier, that’s going to be hard to fix… I mean, if they have that comatose guy playing as Xavier, nobody will buy that…
As for villain I would like to see Sinister, Apocalypse(Age of Apocalypse storyline would be kick ass).
@DrSamBeckett
A director has a HUGE impact on the film. Huge.

Sorry about me gettin carried away like that. Im pretty much like everyone i know that pretty much tries to enjoy a film. Any film will have flaws but i try not to let them ruin the movie for me. I noticed Wires on Christopher Reeve’s Superman films but that doesnt keep me from enjoying them. I respect yours and 790′s views of a movie because everyone has their opinion right? I cant help liking Terminator 4 more than Terminator: TSCC like other people do. While i like X3 as a sequel in the X-men franchise, id like to state that it wasnt my favorite. I liked the first two more especially X2.
@ 790
and i apoligize to ya. sorry!
Hey Chrisj, if you don’t believe that I have written more then one possible treatment for Terminator 4 go back and look at the Terminator threads.
Kenj, don’t get in my face with your bs. You don’t moderate this site.
Your constant over lording of SR’s readers is becoming a joke.
i hope he comes back,and we have a x-4,and x-5 with sinister. i hope they use apocalypse in the magneto film,and the sentinels in first class.a gambit film,mystique,and nightcrawler films would all work,and a district-x.if they do a new mutants movie they need to add in and mix generation-x,and special class from new x-men in including beak,chamber,angel salvador,glob herman,sunspot,husk,wolfsbane,anole,and rockslide. i also think the sentinels story would work in x-4,and x-5 beak,and chamber could be added as characters being chased down with anole,prosimian, and rockslide to.the deadpool film will readeem fox’s mistake i think but these are the films that i as a fan of x-men movie would love to see.i have all the marvel encyclopidias and i think that if they keep it seriouse,and smart,with good character development,and dont change characters from what they are in the comics then it will work every time.
bring on beak,chamber,sinister,apocalypse,and the sentinels.and more of the x-men colossus,iceman,nightcrawler,angel,gambit,rogue,and cyclops.
Chris j – you’re lost in space I’m afraid.
Ken
TDK ending was well done IMO.
@M-Cat
Yah, most people liked it, it just didn’t sit well with me, I got a bit bored and mad all at the same time, lol. To each their own I guess.
@790
LOL, thanks for showing everyone who’s the bigger man here.
@chrisj
Nah, the only thing you’re guilty of is liking the mess that is X3, lmao! You liked it and T4 and I guess you have the right to get defensive when people get on your ass about it. Disagreeing is one thing, getting aggressive and insulting about it is another. In my opinion you didn’t get insulting like some others have…
I respectfully disagree with your views on those movies, I also enjoy movies just for the fun of it, yes I nit pick a lot, but that’s mainly only when the movie takes itself seriously, if the movie doesn’t take itself seriously, it’ll be futile for me to, so for those movies they can be full of holes and I’ll still enjoy it as long as it’s entertaining. But X3 did try to take itself very seriously, so I can’t help but notice all of its flaws… T4, I enjoyed the action scenes by themselves. Put all together in the “plot” they thought up, they don’t really make much sense… The movie is full of holes and don’t deserve the Terminator name IMO, along with T3, although I enjoyed T4′s action scenes more than T3′s action scenes which were just ridiculous…
It seems 3 is usually where things start to fall apart. Even in the old original Star Ward trilogy, most people consider Return of the Jedi to be the worse one, but still way way way way better than all 3 of the new trilogy, lol. Terminator, it fell apart at 3, Alien, it fell apart at 3… lol Hopefully Toy Story breaks that trend…
Star Ward?? Is that like a sci-fi movie about a psychiatric facility in space? People driven to insanity by the endless vastness of space??? LOL, I meant Star Wars… oops…
@ M-Cat
You got me confused with someone who gives a damn. I find it silly that people 790 talk like they can make a better film then some director and wont give a little demostration.
@ Ken J
I understand where you’re coming from. I actually didnt become a Star Wars fan till i watchin Episode 1 on tv. And i only saw Episodes 2 & 3 in theaters. Im not a die hard fan or anything, i wondered why people didnt like Episode 6 & 1. I loved the climax at Episode 1 and i thought Episode 6 was as good as Episode 4. Episode 5 was ok, i thought the first half of it dragged on but got more interesting once they got to cloud city. When it comes to a trilogy, id say Back To The Future is the first where i liked all 3 films. Thats rare for me cause most trilogys have a sequel i didnt care for as much. I also heard they may reboot that which doesnt surprise me.
Ah, thanks for bringing that up, that’s another example of where the 3rd is where it starts to fail. Most people thought Back to the Future 3 was also the weakest. Now don’t get me wrong, Star Wars Episode 6 is loved by just about everyone, I just said it is considered the worst out of the three, mainly because of the Ewoks I think, lol. And same with Back to the Future, I liked all three too, but I did like 1 and 2 more than 3, but I still liked 3.
And FYI, most people consider Episode 5, the one you thought was only ok, to be the best out of all of the Star Wars, lol. But again, that’s just opinion. I personally liked all 3 equally, I didn’t personally have a problem with Episode 6, I thought the Ewoks was a bit silly but so was a lot of things in Star Wars, it was part of the inherant humor of the series in my opinion so I didn’t mind it at all.
Wow we are off-topic…
People didn’t like episode 6? What are you talking about? Seriously, where do you get your information because it seems to be way off on all accounts. Episode 6 is one of the most popular movies of all time. Just check IMDB for one of many sources.
And the one you didn’t like just happens to be somewhere around number 10 on that list of all time great movies.
I don’t see X3 or Terminator Salvation anywhere near that list. just an fyi.
@ Ken J
I can understand what you’re sayin about the Ewoks etc. I mean Ewoks were up against the supposely great clone army, i think clone army was mention on planet Endor. I forget what what said on IMDB, somthing about in the Episode 4-6 trilogy not all the storm troopers were clones but people who joined the empire. Anyways, i guess Ewoks got the advantage because they had the Rebels help and the battle on their own home turf.
Oh yeah, as for Back To The Future trilogy, i liked it because in atleast one way each film forshadowed what was gonna happen in the next. Especially Part 2 which would tell about things from both the first film & third film. Thing i liked about 3 was it took place in 1885 and the time machine ripped its fuel line and they gotta think of a way to get back.
@M-Cat
WTF is your problem? Somebody is on the offensive today… When did I EVER support X3 or Terminator Salvation?
“I agree with you that X3 was horrible and T4 was so full of plot holes it wasn’t even funny…”
“…the only thing you’re guilty of is liking the mess that is X3, lmao!”
“But X3 did try to take itself very seriously, so I can’t help but notice all of its flaws… T4, I enjoyed the action scenes by themselves. Put all together in the “plot” they thought up, they don’t really make much sense… The movie is full of holes and don’t deserve the Terminator name IMO…”
And when did I say people “didn’t like” episode 6, I said out of the 3 original trilogy people tend to rank them Episode 5, Episode 4, then Episode 6, last out of them, but STILL one of the most loved movies. I’VE STATED THIS:
“…Star Wars Episode 6 is loved by just about everyone, I just said it is considered the worst out of the three, mainly because of the Ewoks I think, lol.”
Be cool, stay in school.
@chrisj
Have you seen the Star Wars parodies on Youtube, that are like that tv show Cops (bad boys bad boys, whatcha gonna do?…) but instead of cops in the USA, they show Storm Troopers on Tatooine. And they are like “yah, I’ve been a Storm Trooper for 5 years now, I wanted to serve my galaxy so I signed up…” It’s pretty funny stuff, you should watch them…

Ken
lol that wasn’t directed at you it was for chris j. sorry i should have said his name first.
chris j
im not surprised you don’t care. it goes along with your taste in movies.
@Ken J
Dude, take a Valium before you hit the Post Comment button, would ya?
Vic
@M-Cat
Well, I was the one that said that I thought most people consider Episode 6 the worst out of the 3 original trilogy, don’t think chrisj said that, so that’s why I assumed you were speaking to me. But yah, I don’t mean that it wasn’t good or that people didn’t like it overall, just compared to the other two. But I personally liked all three equally, Ewoks and all, haha.
Sorry chrisj if I don’t feel the need to indulge you with a Terminator script on a X men film thread.
To quote chrisj, “You got me confused with someone who gives a damn.”
If this wasn’t a family thread I would be ripping you a new one about now.
Enjoy your Terminator Salvation dvd. Check out the credits where you will see that Mcg didn’t write the film.
