The first three Die Hards were immensely enjoyable, thus the reason it was so disappointing to see Live Free and Die Hard cannibalize so much of what made them that way. Out was the brutal gun-violence, the hilarious smartassery, the fantastic antagonists, and in was the PG-13 videogame violence, the Kevin Smith jokes, and the computer programmer bad guy.

Recently, series star Bruce Willis confirmed that Die Hard 5 was on the way with a script by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and today, Willis indicated that Die Hard 6 is on deck. What about 7, 8, 9, and 10? According to Willis, he plans to retire as John McClane after number six.

Check out the quote from Willis:

“In the next few years, they could easily find a replacement for me or call the character someone else. But for me, I want to do Die Hard 5, then one final Die Hard movie — Die Hard 6 — before finally hanging that white vest up for good. At the moment, I can run and I can fight on screen. But there will come a time when I no longer want to do that. That’s when I’ll step away from the Die Hard films.”

Is it too much to ask that one or both of these movies randomly take place around the holidays? I’m not even asking for 5 or 6 to take place on Christmas, like 1 and 2, but what about Thanksgiving? It could be the Planes, Tranes, & Automobiles of the Die Hard series.

I smell a franchise!

Willis also revealed that the infamous “Yipee ki-yay (et cetera)” line was something he ad-libbed:

“Take the first Die Hard, I was the one who came up with the line, ‘Yippee ki-yay motherf****r!’ The producers were trying to give me their take on how I should say a certain line at that point in the movie, and I disagreed. […] So they said, ‘You do it’. So I did. Yippee ki-yay was some goofy thing that cowboys used to say in those movies, so I added the ‘motherf****r’ bit as I thought it was a nice, contrasting combination of the two images. And it worked. That expression’s really stuck around, that’s for sure.”

Not that I don’t trust Willis implicitly, but I would love to see this little on-set anecdote confirmed by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. DeSouza, the writers of the original Die Hard.

Despite the fact that I was, shall we say, less than satisfied with the fourth Die Hard, I’m really looking forward to number five (and number six, for that matter). I’m not one of those fans who gets disheartened by a bad sequel or two: I’m the type who gets extremely frustrated and yearns for the filmmakers to redeem themselves.

Take Indiana Jones and the Kindgom of the Crystal Skull, for example—I would honestly love to see an Indiana Jones 5, sans Shia LaBeouf, in hopes that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg can undo some of the damage that they did with number four. I mean, it’s not like the series can get any worse, right?

What are your feelings on the Die Hard franchise? Do you want to see it end with Die Hard 6, or would you prefer to see the series go on in perpetuity without Willis attached? Maybe by the time 6 is being developed John McTiernan (director of 1 and 3, my personal series favorites) will be out of prison and ready for a third Die Hard go around.

Bruce Willis fans can currently see him kicking ass in Red alongside Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, and John Malkovich.

  1. No more pg13 rubbish, make it an 18 cert or r rated whatever, bring me more swearing, more violence, more stupid situations mclane has to get out of in the very last possible second or die, give me his on off relationship with his ex wife, give me the mouthy attitude THEN We’ll have a die hard movie

  2. I guess I’m not a man then?

    • Ben,

You still have time – it’s not out yet. 8)

      Vic

      • Haha, I’ll have to rent this thing before I commit to owning it forever.

  3. Expendables comes on the 23rd? i thought new movies come out on dvd/blu-ray on Tuesdays.

  4. Live Free or Die Hard was an awesome movie, the second best behing the first.

    • THANK YOU!

  5. I’d definetly would love to see Die Hard 5 & 6.
Especially if he himself (Willis) is geared up about doing.
If Hollywood tries to continue (or reboot or anything of that sort) the series without him I wouldn’t pay any attention. Its Bruce or no one.
I also agree (after thinking about it for a while) that the fourth is the weakest of the bunch, so it’s ample ground to improve on. Personally i’ve always like the third installment the most, i’ll never forget Jeremy Irons in that movie, brilliant.

  6. Hell, nobody can do John McClane than Bruce Willis. I would be really disappointed. Even if the plot sucks, Willis will make it badass. Please Directors, don’t put any other guy to replace him! It’s like casting Justin Bieber to say “Bond. James Bond.”

    • Well said.

  7. bruce is the man! the best john mcclane i have seen. sly and arnold were considered for the role but they both had other film projects to do in 1988. bruce willis is even better than richard gere.

  8. please make die hard 5 rated r. make it more like the other 3. no pg 13 nonsense. just rated r. that’s what i want to see. a rated r die hard film from bruce willis. not like live free or die hard.

  9. Well, I would agree with this idea now. If anything make the 6th the end, cuz you can’t keep this going. The only thing that makes these movies alike is his “Yippi Kai Yay Mother F**ker” quote. At the minimum, say it at least once in each movie. But I believe that after the 6th, he is probably done. This is just my opinion folks.

  10. 4 words: BRING BACK THE COWBOY

  11. Replace Bruce Willis in possibly more sequels? That’s crazy talk! It’s-it’s-it’s unthinkable.

P.S. I thought the fourth was the best since the original. I’m not gonna dismiss the whole movie just because I watched the PG rated one before getting the actual rated DVD. And neither should anyone else.

  12. I think they should stop with the over the top stunts and make him more vulnerable like he used to be. The first one was so great because he was all alone in a building severely outnumbered and he had to play things smart and take them down one at a time. There was actual strategy and a feeling that if he f**ks up his is actually in danger. He just seems to be turned into some kind of superhero now. Don’t get me wrong the action scenes themselves are great but I feel don’t belong in this movie world because after all he is just a cop. No more flying cars into helicoptors, and no more falling down through collapsing highways. Make him vulnerable and make him cocky and funny just like the others and you will have a good die hard movie.

  13. If John McClane is to truely retire

  14. If John Mcclane is to truely retire then a Gruber needs to do it or at least try.

  15. To tell u all the truth, I don’t know how Die Hard will survive without Bruce. He created John McClane, he brought John to life. I just don’t think anyone else could take his place in our hearts. The problem is, they can’t just end the series, they have to either have John die, or have Jack take over (which would be happier), and start a whole new series with Jack. Maybe Jack could have kids, and John could meet them, then Bruce can show his “father” side. It’s a thought.
As far as titles go, maybe it could be something like, “It’s Hard for a McClane to Die”. Jack does say something to that extent in Die Hard 5, he says “it’s hard to kill a McClane”. Well, maybe not cause that’s flipping the words “Die” and “Hard”. It’s always been “Die” and then “Hard”, and “It’s Hard for a McClane to Die” is messing that up. Maybe “McClane’s don’t Die Hard” could work, if tweaked some how.
And having Holly back would be fun.

  16. Just saw this on the action elite website. If true, then I’m in!
    http://theactionelite.com/2013/04/is-this-the-plot-for-die-hard-6/

  17. @Baxter, I saw that too! It sounds awesome! Here’s to bringing it back on track and taking it to Japan is definitely the way to go. Such a natural progression, steering it full circle and hopefully including characters from previous films in the series.

  18. Bruce Willis kicks ass in every Die Hard. yes, he def redeemed himself with the 6th movie. And yes a 7th would b more than awesome, but if he wants to retire then let him. And if and when he should, and shall someone TRY to b a John McClane thereafter, they will fail miserably.

  19. Love Bruce Willis and all of his movies.I never read the critics reviews on any of his movies till after I have seen them. Many people incuding myself do not agree with the critics. I especially love all the Die Hard movies.

  20. Hi Bruce, I just wanted you to know I LOVED Die Hard 4, Live Free Die Hard!!! It’s one of my favorites!! I watch it all the time.

    Your just the BEST Bruce!!

  21. I will keep Watching as long as Bruce is John mc Clane love these movies X

  22. die hard 5 was bad. hope die hard 6 is as good as 1,2,3, and 4.

  23. Rather than seeing little kids being anti-terrorists, let’s just have Bruce Willis be it. I miss the Die Hard 1 that I grew up with. Man, were 1 and 2 thrillers with real terrorists. Let’s make sure John McTeirnan directs it an be sure there is lots of terrorism in it.

With Hollywood being as liberal as it is after Hurricane Katrina and 9/11, I have little faith in Die Hard 6. Don’t worry about offending people and having the media go bonkers over its relation to 9/11. It is all fake and here is what I want:

John McClane gets involved in a Terrorist plot while on a Carabean Holiday. Have it take place during Christmas, or during hurricane season. Give it old school technology like Die Hard 1 had. Bring Holly back in ad Al Powell too.

    Miss Ya’ Pre-Nine-Eleven Hollywood.

  24. I THINK EITHER RON HOWARD, MARTIN SCORSESE, OR STEVEN SPIELBERG SHOULD DIRECT DIE HARD 6
