Stephen Sommers brought many of our favorite toys to life in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and while the film was not of high critical standard, it did a fair job at delivering action and set pieces that rivaled only what our imaginations could come up with when playing with the action figures as youngsters.

So, when the obligatory G.I. Joe 2 was announced with Sommers not returning, many of us thought it would be a good thing to see what another director could do with the franchise and fan-favorite characters. But then star Rachel Nichols revealed that most of the cast would confusingly not return and it was difficult to get excited for more Joe if they couldn’t even bring back the live-action action figures. Since then however, new director Jon Chu has been filling out the missing ranks with names we can get behind, names who will join returnees Duke (Channing Tatum) and Snake Eyes (Ray Park). Soon, we may also be adding Bruce Willis.

According to the Heat Vision scoop, Bruce Willis is in negotiations with Paramount Pictures to play the role of General Joe Colton in G.I. Joe 2, the man who created the original team and earned the title name “G.I. Joe.”

With leadership figure of The Rise of Cobra, Dennis Quaid, seemingly not returning for the sequel either, Willis could be that veteran starpower stepping in to fill the void. Quaid gone, along with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols was a tough pill to swallow for some, but this growing cast list should make up for it:

G.I. Joe 2 goes by the new title of G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation now releasing in theaters on June 29, 2012. Director Jon Chu promises that the sequel will be of a vastly different tone to that of its predecessor. Less “shine,” more dirt, and some real intense action and emotion for the characters. So, think of it as Tears of the Sun 2 but with cooler vehicles and gadgets.
