‘Bruce Almighty 2′ Is Officially Being Developed

Jim Carrey has headlined many comedy hits over the past 8-9 years, but none of them have achieved anywhere near the same levels of box office success as his 2003 starring vehicle, Bruce Almighty. Is it really any shock then that Bruce Almighty 2 is now being actively developed?

A spinoff/financial bust/critical bomb titled Evan Almighty was made back in 2007, featuring Steve Carell’s scene-stealing anchor character from Bruce; this time around, Universal is planning a direct sequel to the aforementioned Carrey flick, with the intention of bringing the animated comedian back as leading man.

Variety says that studio heads are holding talks with screenwriters Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul to script the Bruce Almighty sequel, with the intent of bringing Carry back as the titular character. Considering the two were co-writers of the 2008 Carrey flick Yes Man, itself a cinematic cousin (in spirit) of Bruce, their potential involvement makes all the more sense.

To refresh your memory: Bruce Almighty revolves around Bruce Nolan (Carrey), a self-obsessed TV news reporter who continually complains to God when things in life don’t go his way. However, the big man himself (Morgan Freeman) decides to teach Bruce a lesson by allowing the latter to become God for a while. Cue the wacky antics involving Carrey abusing his sacred powers for self-gain, followed by affirming life-lessons about being responsible, caring for others, etc., etc.

In other words, Bruce Almighty is your average high-concept comedy star vehicle that mixes broad humor with gooey sentiment. Most people would probably agree that this particular Carrey flick is one of the more entertaining titles that fits that description; even its detractors would admit, it could’ve been much worse (see: almost every Adam Sandler movie released in the past decade).

Does that mean that a Bruce Almighty sequel is something the majority of people want to see? Well…

"What do you mean, it's either this or 'Mr. Popper's Penguins 2'?"

The Bruce Almighty followup isn’t the only Carry-centric comedy sequel in the works right now; the Farrelly Brothers are also actively planning Dumb & Dumber 2, which would pick up with the characters from the original 1994 hit in real-time (ie. some 20 years after the fact). There’s no word yet on what exactly the plot of the new Bruce Almighty movie would entail, but it’d probably be something similar (ex. the film picks up with an older Bruce, who needs to be taught yet another lesson by God).

Between the two, it’s fair to say that the Dumb & Dumber sequel reads as far more interesting, if only because it would be fascinating to see what much-older versions of Harry and Lloyd are doing with their lives. By comparison, it’s kind of difficult right now to imagine how a second Bruce Almighty flick could feel like anything but a money-grubbing rehash of the original.

  1. This is great news! I’m a long-time Carrey fan and his recent career has been up and down for me. I’m hoping both sequels will be good!

  2. Good Lord no. Bruce Almighty is a classic, it doesn’t need a sequel. We don’t want a sequel. Leave it be.

  3. Even Almighty was bad enough. Just leave it alone. Stop it!

  4. This doesnt sound like a good idea. IMO Carrey hasnt done anything worth watching since Bruce Almighty but the movie doesnt need a sequel. I predict a flop.

  5. I really cant see why they would make a sequel, but to get jim carrey out to do something good,(Mr. Popper’s penguins was terrible)would be nice.

  6. I thought he was against doing sequels after Ace Ventura 2.

    • He’s obviously going back to his most popular films such as this one and Dumb and Dumber. It’s actually smart of him to do so.I hate to say this about him, but he’s washed up.

    • Money talks after awhile.

  7. “it’s kind of difficult right now to imagine how a second Bruce Almighty flick could feel like anything but a money-grubbing rehash of the original.”

This was my thought exactly! When the character goes on the journey that Bruce did, where do you go from there?

Hollywood just doesn’t seem to get that some characters have only One story! (see: Neo in The Matrix!)

    • I can’t disagree enough with this sentence: “Hollywood just doesn’t seem to get that some characters have only One story!”

See: ‘Die Hard 2′, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Spider-Man 2′, ‘Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior’, etc. etc. etc. Any character can have more than one story, it’s just a matter of how you interpret another story to the big screen. ‘The Matrix’ series is an example of how NOT to do it. But, the above are good examples of characters that got second chances and did great.

      • Your examples are all action and comic book movies which or more are less predestined to become franchises, whereas Jim Carrey movies for the most part are not, and work better as stand alone films. See: Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls. Bruce Almighty 2 = Unnecessary. Next!

        • Am I the only one who actually liked ‘Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls’? It was definitely not the worst movie ever, but people act like it’s absolutely horrible.

Honestly, I’d love to see a sequel to ‘The Mask’ (with Jim Carrey, of course). I’d love to see what happens after the events in ‘Me, Myself & Irene’. The problem is doing it well, granted ‘Ace Ventura 2′ was nowhere near as good as the original – but, if they do the sequels for ‘Bruce Almighty’ and ‘Dumb & Dumber’ well they could be very good.

All of those examples are just that. They’re examples of sequels that were good because they didn’t just have a stupid idea for the sequel. Comedy sequels could be good and there are examples of sequels that are really good.

          • Sin,i wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel also to Me,Myself,& Irene, the question is what direction would it take & what would be the story line?

            • Honestly, I don’t care what direction or story line it’d take. I just want to see him and his “sons” watch Richard Pryor again HAHA and see his butt chin in action.

But, maybe a direction would be something along the lines of him running the police force and Irene getting into trouble again with the law. He has to drive her across country on the down-low because some crooked cops are after her for seeing something she shouldn’t have seen in order to testify against them.

              • That’s sound’s good enough for me.

          • I personally liked When Nature Calls more than the original Pet Detective.

      • Hands up all those who thought alien and terminator should not have had a sequel

        • Nope…”Aliens” and “Terminator 2″ were excellent films, in several ways better than their franchise originators.

        • Well, I can’t disagree with you more here… Actually this may very well be the most ridiculous comment I have ever seen on Screen Rant… ‘Terminator 2′ and ‘Alien 2′ were both superior to their originals actually. It’s the threequels and on that you should be raising your hands about.

  8. This time, Bruce is given all of Satan’s powers!!!

    • Yes!!!!!!!!

    • Now that might work! Bruce Desolation!

  9. What made the first one so good was Bruce lost his faith and didn’t know what was happening when he was bestowed God’s powers. Now, he’d know that God exists so it really wouldn’t be nearly as funny in my opinion. If they wanted to do another sequel, go the route of Evan Almighty and give a different comedian a chance (with a much better script of course). Perhaps get both Carrey and Carell supporting roles in it too with Freeman bequeathing his power upon someone worthy once again.

Ideally, I’d like to see Freeman as God vs. Elizabeth Hurley as the devil (à la “Bedazzled”) in an epic comedic battle between good and evil (Celebrity Death Match!). These two forces could toy with Jim Carrey as they put him through different trials and tribulations to see where his faith ultimately resides.

I don’t think a sequel is necessary, but if they are going to do it, I hope it isn’t a “money-grubbing rehash of the original” and it is something as cleverly written and funny as the first.

    • They could mimic the Book of Job.
      Trials of Bruce!

    • God vs devil as freeman and hurley putting bruce through all these changes, that’s very creative.I would pay to see that for sure.

  10. Wow! I’m looking forward to this. I’ve been in 2 movies already. I wonder if I can audition.

    • Oh yea, what were you in?

  11. If Jennifer Aniston is in it again then I’ll check her out….er…ahem…check it out!

    • I could never stand her before, but now she just get’s more sexier everytime i see her now.

  12. IAM IN!!!!!!!!

But first Dumb and Dumber 2 sequel Carrey! :D

  13. i hope there is also comming Ace ventura III :D

  14. Did Carrey actually express interest in doing any of these projects? If so, amazing given his resistance to sequels in the past. If not and if they can’t get him to come back, I have four titles for you: “Evan Almighty,” “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd,” “Ace Ventura, Jr.” and “Son of the Mask.”

  15. Sweet loved the first one

  16. Any sequel with Jim Carrey in it is worth watching. I still would like to see him in a sequel to “A series of unfortunate events”

  17. They could show that Bruce has been living a blessed life, having a personal relationship with God. Then, given that he’s in news, he publicly denies God; having given into the pressure of today’s media. And then God vanishes from his life.
So instead of a movie where he has the power of God, he experiences life truly without God.

  18. The original was bad enough. I’m shocked there was even a sequel, let alone talk of another sequel.

    • See, people are just ignoring these comments saying that the original was bad simply because you are just flat out wrong. Bruce Almighty and Dumb and Dumber were some of his best performances. Bruce Almighty was one of my favorites simply because its one of the only films that Jim Carrey plays a character with emotions and heart, instead of a goofy single-minded freak.

  19. I thought bruce almighty 2 was evan almighty.

    • It was,but that won’t stop hollywood.

  20. I personally would rather see a Bruce sequel as opposed to a Dumber sequel. Dumb and Dumber as well as Me, Myself and Irene are the two Jim Carrey movies that I really just can’t stand. Personally I thought he did his best work in movies like Truman Show, Man on the Moon, and The Majestic. But I guess that’s just me.

As for a Bruce sequel I could see God choosing Bruce and Jennifer Aniston playing modern day Joseph and Mary to a second coming of Christ. But I must admit I do like the whole God vs. the devil idea mentioned above. I just doubt Hollywood would make the connection of Elizabeth Hurley as the devil since Bedazzled didn’t do so well at the box office. If not her, I would like to see Ray Wise play the devil again as he did so well on the short lived TV show Reaper. (Wishful thinking I know.)

  21. So, out of all the great movies that need a sequel, they’re gonna do a sequel to this? wtf?!

Evan Almighty was enough for a sequel.

I’d prefer Wild Hogs 2, Zoolander 2 or even Back To The Future IV.

Comedies are meant to have sequels.. have a look at the last two parents/fockers or The Hangover 2.

    • Hangover 2 = bad example

  22. Bruce Almighty 2….

Because there were so many unanswered questions from the first one.

  23. Tebow Almighty? LOL!

    • ROTFLMBO!! Now that was funny!

  24. Umm I thought Evan Almighty WAS the sequel.

  25. Evan Almighty was truly terrible. That should have been the coffin nail. I do enjoy Jim Carrey though and would watch it although needlessly pointless.

  26. Jim Carrey is GOD! I can’t wait to see Bruce Almighty 2 and Dumb and Dumber 2! Evan Almighty is not sequel because of the name “Evan” because he became Noah who build the Ark. So, the first film Bruce Almighty (Jim Carrey) gets a power from God. So Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty is different.

To my theories for Bruce Almighty 2… I think it would be meeting with the devil from hell who comes to curse Bruce! I doubt that Jennifer Aniston will be in it.

Also, there is a rumors that there will be Ace Ventura 3! I hope so!

    Ace Ventura 3
    Bruce Almighty 2
    Dumb and Dumber 2
    The Mask 2 ???
Grinch Who Stole Christmas 2 ???

  27. At first, I really felt that a sequel to Bruce Almighty is a bad idea. But if part 2 would involve a story about God and the Devil as proposed in this thread, then I guess that would make an interesting story. Kinda’ reminds me of the old movie “Oh God, You Devil” starring George Burns.

  28. Carey should make a movie as one of his iconic characters from In Living Color…. Vera De Milo !!… that would be one hilarious movie!!… for those of you who don’t remember… here you go:
