Brian Austin Green Campaigns To Be The Green Lantern

Brian Austin Green, who plays Derek Reese in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, wants to play Hal Jordan in the upcoming DC superhero movie and he wants you thoughts on the matter.

Green is most famous for his role on Beverly Hills 90210 but more recently made a splash with his kick-ass role in the Terminator television series. With the second season of the show finishing up this week and no third season announced, the actor is trying to push his way into the movie business with a major role in the next potential DC franchise, The Green Lantern.

Comic Book Resources (CBR) News got a chance to speak with Brian about the role and released the first part of their interview. The conversation opens with CBR asking Brian what’s going on with him and The Green Lantern movie.

“Well, nothing’s going on right now. I’ve been sort of throwing myself into the mix and trying to get in to sit down with the producers and see what’s going on. I mean, from what I’ve heard and the response so far from what most people have heard, they’re planning on skewing younger with the character. I’ve heard somewhere in like the mid-twenties, which, being a Green Lantern fan, I don’t necessarily agree with. I’ve always kind of felt that Hal Jordan needs to be a man. He needs to be somebody who lives a little and experienced a lot. So right now I’m just sort of trying to throw my name in and make it something that they might consider. That’s about what I got.”

Brian then moves on to reveal that he’s not yet read the script or met in person with the producers, but his agent and manager have been communicating with them. He also talks about how this would be his first time in the type of role that would bring people into the theaters and that because of that, he’s a tough sell, not having movie fame and that large fan following.

CBR later asked about the risk of an actor throwing himself out there for the role and subjecting himself to what the fans think of him.

“You know, it’s the first time I’ve ever done it. It’s the first time I’ve ever really pushed for something the way I’m pushing for this. It’s odd, I was talking with someone about the way this all came down for me and it wasn’t something that was necessarily on my mind at the time. I didn’t even completely know that the film was in the process and that they were getting it together. A friend of mine just randomly sent me a text message and he was like, “Dude, I just saw a picture of you as the Green Lantern online and it was awesome.” I was like, “What are you talking about?” He sent me the link, I went on and some kid had just put my face on a classic Green Lantern shot, the one of him standing, making the fist with the ring on the finger.

It was funny because I saw it and I thought that it was pretty cool. At the same time, I’ve been playing a lot of “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe ” and Green Lantern is one of my favorite characters. Then Megan [Fox] and I were sitting talking about it and it just kind of clicked. It made sense and I found it odd that somebody had mentioned it to begin with.”

I like what Green is saying, especially about the age. For me, Brian Austin Green was the best part of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and I like that he’s gunning for this role, demonstrating that he truly wants it. I was in support of the Chris Pine as The Green Lantern rumor but the more I think about it, I believe Brian Austin’s a better fit than the Star Trek lead actor and I also like that he’s a bit older.

When asked about how he’d play the role of Hal Jordan, Green made the comparison to Iron Man (the producers said back in March that Green Lantern would have an Iron Man vibe) and he likes the idea of the hero with “internal struggle”.

Green’s final thoughts on the subject:

“I’m just intrigued and curious to see what the fans think. Ultimately, fans of the comic and the history should decide. If I’m not the right guy then I shouldn’t be playing the character but if people think that there’s something there, then let’s see where it can go.”

I love the idea. Brian is relatively unknown for the movie business and I think that’s the type of actor they should choose for the lead role in this superhero flick – He has my support.

Green is currently keeping himself busy with producing his girlfriend’s upcoming comic book movie, Fathom. In the interview, that topic was also discussed and he said that the script is being written by the writer of Prince of Persia, Jordan Mechner, and the first draft is due in a few weeks.

Do you think Brian Austin Green could play a good Hal Jordan? He’d like to know.

The Green Lantern is scheduled to open December 17, 2010.

  1. Sounds good to me. I don’t know much about this actor but he does look the part.

  2. I think he would be a good choose for the role. It would be good to have an unknown actor play the role of The Green Lantern

  3. Unfortunately, I don’t see him getting the role. I think he’d be great for the part, but Green Lantern’s not the most recognisable hero out there. You can put an unknown in the Batman, Superman or Spiderman role because every one knows who those characters are, but with a movie light GL the studio really needs a big name actor to attract an audience.

  4. Some people think since Brian was in 90210 that he is going to be typecast because of it. I’m 20 years old I’ve never watched a single episode of 90210 and since a good amount of people who would go watch the movie would be around my age, I don’t think they have anything to worry about. He would be a better choice than Chris Pine.

  5. Has there been any chatter about Matt Damon? Seems perfect to me.

  6. @ Karl, I’ve not seen anything on Damon for Green Lantern. Although he was one of the many rumored actors to play Cap. America…

  7. I like this idea, I think he would be perfect and he WAS great in TSCC, I do remember him 90210, I didn’t watch the series but it was in major swing when I was watching a lot of TV as a kid so I saw him a lot, that doesn’t skew my view at all, I think that as long as he opened up a bit and had some more range he he would be a pretty awesome choice.

  8. I think Green could work for the part of GL but I’d prefer Pine .

  9. Green would do a good job, but believe that dont believe Pine has a little bit of an edge because of what ST will do this year. I’ve said Pine could also be a good choose for Captian America too. Good lucky to ya, Green!

  10. It doesn’t hurt that his last name is Green.

  11. Four years ago I would of said no, but after Terminator I say yea he can pull it off. He’s a good actor and actually was the best part of the show by a mile. I didn’t like the last few episode of the second season and it actually killed the show for me.

I think he is a better choice than Pine or any other 20 something , but my first choice is still the same. I still think that the absolute best person for the role with out a doubt is David Borianez(I always screw up the spelling so let me just say this Angel/ Agent Seli Both.)

  12. I like the idea of Green in this role. I think this is one of those stories that starts as sort of joke, but will slowly gain momentum until people really start rooting for it.

  13. I’ve always thought he was a good actor. He was the big name star of TSCC other than Summer. I don’t know much about the Green Lantern as I’ve never read the comic books, but I’d like to see him move into the films.

  14. Maybe we could have Luke Perry (Dylan)play Sinestro… HAHAHA

  15. @ Manowar

But seriously, the fact the actor fits the part, and he’s a fan, AND lobbying for the film. Meh, I say that means I want HIM in it. Because that means he cares what happens to the character :)

  16. @ Manowar, lol

… Jennie Garth (Kelly) could then play Carol Ferris (Star Sapphire)

  17. ^ pure IMDB work btw, I never got into 90210 and was too young when it first started.

  18. LOVE the idea! Brian would be great! I’m a big fan of Green Lantern so I wouldn’t want to see just anyone get it. I do think he is perfect for it though. Fingers are crossed for you Brian! Good Luck!

  19. I would give Green a shot. I laughed when he came aboard TSCC, but he actually showed he can act, and act well. I also admire how he he seems to have a passion for the character and wants to fight for the role, even though he knows he isn’t a big star.

  20. Personally, I don’t see it. I want Green Lantern to be older. I would like Nathan Fillion for the role instead of BAG.

Chris Pine is fine, but I would like GL to be older like RDJ with Iron Man.

  21. @ Branden,

I love Nathan Fillion and I would like to see him in a big superhero flick.

About the age thing though, Fillion is only 2 years older than Green.

  22. Hmm Nathan Fillion is awesome, I vote him instead haha, naw I like Green for it, Nathan hmm who could be play…

  23. Not watched TTSCC but the fact that the response to this was so positive really makes me think that he does a good job in it. If he had said this after 90210 I have a feeling that things would have been different.

I personally would love it if Nathan Fillion were to be Hal but doubt Warner Brothers knows how much Geek cred he has.

  24. NO!!
I personally as a comic book fan do not think that this Mr. Green guy is right for the role. He looks nothing like Hal Jordan and yeah GL should be a little older but not that old. This guy looks too old. GL is supposed to be fairly young. I much prefer to see Chris Pine, he fits the role a lot more.
But I’ve sat down with my boyfriend discussing who’d be the perfect GL and he has proved to me (and I am very difficult to convince about superhero movies) that Sam Witwer from Smallville would be a pretty good pic. After seeing pics of him and GL I had to agree with him. He’s a pretty good actor and he definently has the look and face of GL/Hal Jordan. Just grow out his hair and dye it brown and he’ll be perfect for the role. DC should look into this.
But if not I don’t mind having Chris Pine, he’s the best rumored choice so far, and really the best ‘cuz they’ve had crazy, ridiculous rumors about this lately.

  25. Wow! Sam Witwer. That is a good choice, but the problem is that most people don’t know who he is outside of “Smallville.” Sam could pull a “Brandon Routh”. You never know.

  26. I like Sam Witwer in his roles in Battlestar Galactica, The Mist, Smallville and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – however, I’m not sure he can be the lead in a big budget film just yet.

It’d be interesting though – My vote still goes to B.A.G. but I don’t know how realistic his chances are :(

  27. Yea a lot of people don’t know who Sam Witwer is, in my opinion this is better for DC since many people would look at him as an unknown and only see him as Green Lantern, not Doomsday or whoever else he played before. And unlike the awful Brandon Routh he ACTUALLY has acting experience so I think he may actually do a good job. For a tv actor he acts pretty good already. But this is just a suggestion. If these comic companies were smart they’d look at the fans opinions to get good ideas for lead actors since they seem to have no clue when it comes to this with superhero movies….
They wanted an older GL, he’s oler, and he has that man face that fits perfectly with the character and that is what everyone wants to see.

  28. That is a really good idea, Julissa. I don’t want a person getting the role because they are a big name.

I want the right person for the role. The fans will decide if the movie succeeds or fails mainly based the casting choices.
