It’s certainly been a rough road for a new Conan movie.
However what seems entirely probable is there will be one, although some time ago frontrunner for the director’s chair Brett Ratner dismissed his attachment to the project as “rumors” and “premature news.”

Well it seems that his involvement might be more possible than he let on as he’s made his thoughts known on who should be cast in the iconic title role:
“I believe it should be an unknown… Conan is kind of iconic. It’s kind of like when you do Superman.”
“Growing up, my favorite comic book was ‘Conan,’ [It] was the first comic book I ever read.”
He also expressed his awareness that it’s a mighty task to helm a film about one of cinema history’s most iconic macho-men but is also confident it’s time for the character to grace the big-screen again:
“Look, it’s difficult to fill those shoes,” insisted Ratner, “But they came up with a new Batman, they came up with a new James Bond, you know?”
I think it’s possible that Ratner’s dismissal in the past regarding his involvement in a new Conan film may have been slyly on purpose to throw people off the scent. After all if he wasn’t involved in at least some capacity (even if it’s just preliminary talks with the studio) why would he let his thoughts about who should play him be known, and why would he show such enthusiasm?
Since Conan was his favorite comic book growing up he’ll probably end up officially getting the gig, even if he’s certainly not the director that movie fans will want. He directed the first two Rush Hour movies (which aren’t all that bad, but nothing great) and according to a lot of comic book fans he ruined the X-Men franchise with the third one (I liked it by the end of the day but he certainly dropped the level of quality substantially).
Ratner’s love for the character is encouraging but it still doesn’t prove he would do a good job with a new movie…
As far as who should play the title role, I agree 100% with Ratner that it should be an unknown. Like he said above, with Superman they had to cast an unknown so we could associate him with that character and not just see an A-list actor wearing the tights and cape. The same goes for Conan – he’s such an iconic character of movie history and to put anyone really well known in the role is creating hurdles that are unneeded (there’s a small chance that it could possible work, but it’s very unlikely).

Man, why is he back with this Conan project? What, Rush Hour 4 not getting a greenlight? Beverly Hills 4 not going so well?
No, no, no, no Rats for Conan, especially Conan! Everything about this is wrong, from Ratner’s involvement, to his supposed liking of the character, his statement about a “new” Batman/James Bond, huh?
The only thing he makes sense with is that an unknown should be Conan.
Maybe that is Stallone’s scene with Arnold in The Expendables. Come to LA so that these two can put out the Rat infestation!
If anything, Conan needs an epic director! John McTiernan for example! As to whoever is Conan? Please don’t let it be a sissy!

I agree that Arnie should be back as King Conan, maybe telling his son about how he became king (or some other story) and the younger actor takes over from there.

I’d rather watch Ratner eat a bullet than direct a Conan movie. Or any movie for that matter. Maybe he can make a cameo as a Nazi in Inglorious Basterds and my wish will come true!
I think they should nab a better director in my opinion. Conan is huge, one of the first icons of the swords and sorcery genre..I dont think Arnold should be in it at all. They should lean more towards the robert howard books and do something amazing with this film. A unknown is iffy..they would have to cast the right guy. If they did pick a known actor, they should buff up Gerard Butler abit more (not that he needs much after 300) and he would make an EXCELLENT conan.
So long as it’s been green lit. Then we can relax. Let them do their thing with casting and confirming scripts and post production business. When the film comes out….we’ll just have to take it from there. But I would rather them make a sweeping epic rather than some action flick flop. Look at the Lord of the rings and compare it to Dungeons and Dragons or Eragon. Big difference.
I agree with you guys on this one, Ratner shouldn’t be the choice for Conan. I do agree that they need to go in the direction of an unknown for the role though. Please not some weakling, get somebody who has the physique you need to be Conan. We all know that no ones going to look like Arnold from back then but there has to be a decent actor whos got the build out there. I like John’s idea of having Arnold in the script as King Conan, maybe telling his son the tales of his adventures. Maybe they could do something like in 300, Conan’s son has to go out into the world and fight to survive. On the other hand that might not work, put an actor we can believe is Conan in the role with a good script and it will be good movie. Don’t go overboard with the special effects either, the first films had awesome hand to hand combat and battle scenes without CGI.
Rober E Howard’s Conan was and is the best out there in regard to Sword and Sorcery and he wrote these wild stories back in the 30s!! If anyone makes a film that can be true to and bring to life Robert E Howard’s fantastic descriptions of the world of Conan, then it will be a blockbuster. If the politics of Hollywierd and money screw it up then we will have the cartoonish remakes of the Arnie Conans!!

I grew up on the conan movies an still have/watch them today..i would like to say that as the main roll should and allways be Schwarzenegger… none of these new actors would make a good conan to say great would be shooting to high.. John Milius had it right by casting Schwarzenegger…even if they had to place his a$$ in an old iron wheel-chair it would still make since.. Look what they did with Rambo an the Rocky movies it worked because Stallone came back…. I say for any true old school movie buff The Legends that made the movie should come back and anything else would be a MAJOR disappointment..If it’s not broke DON’T fix it…But to agree with you all Ratner should never be able to shoot this film….
Not to insult anyone but…I loved the original Arnold Film because it was CONAN…but I hated the goofieness about it.
CONAN would never whine when someone is stomping on his hand and he certainly would not fall asleep in his stew.
Arnold sucked as CONAN…he looked the part but his bad acting is what shined. NO to ARNOLD. If they can…they should ask Hugh Jackman or perhaps Orlando Bloom. If all those actors can bulk up for films like 300 and Will Smith can do it for ALI then I think Bloom could put on 25 lbs of Muscle for the part. For no other reason than this…did you see Kingdom of Heaven? Great film..Bloom looks good with a sword and long unwashed greasie hair. Plus…all the LOTR fans and Pirates fans would check it out. Good casting and good marketing.

as I said…he can train for it. Did you see kingdom of heaven? Anyway it’s not a solid idea of mine just a suggestion that came to mind. I’m not even sure i’d like it either.
man.. I m bodybuilding my body 12 years and it s not posibile that somebody like Orlando build muscles for short time.3 years of training is necessary with lots of steroids..producers needs somebody who already have muscular body and my sugestion is Drasko Andjic..unknown actor from Serbia
that is is you’re going for that phenominal ARNOLD , LOU bodybuilder physique. But Christian Bale and Will Smith put on 25 lbs of Muscle for roles…I’m onlt saying it can be done…not that that’s what they should do. Besides..yes it’s cool and all but…CONAN did not weight train. He is not supposed to look like you or ARNOLD in his prime. He’s big with a natural physique from being a blacksmith and from sword training and from climbing and from rowing. But when you get a guy whose 6′6″ with those attributes and put them all together…he’d squash ARNOLD and LOU and YOU and DAVE and ROBBIE and TOM. Together in one swat.
One thing is certain, 90 percent of people who will see this film knows only through the character Conan comics and film in which Arnold played … people expected something similar.
