Snatched from the realm of cancellation, Fox has reached an agreement with Sony TV, so that the Christian Slater-led comedy Breaking In will make a return to airwaves sometime midseason.

The series, created by Adam F. Goldberg (Fanboys) and Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters), and produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison productions, debuted last season to good reviews and decent enough ratings – a combination which left many somewhat perplexed by FOX’s failure to place an order for a second season.

Although the network nixed the show in May, its future was ostensibly kept open. Last month, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly had this to say: “We all liked Breaking In but… we had to make a judgment call. It still has a shot. You know what?  Stranger things have happened.”

Given the extended options for Christian Slater, Michael Rosenbaum, Bret Harrison (V), Odette Annable  (Cloverfield) and Alphonso McAuley (Glory Road) that Fox joined Sony TV in covering the cost of, Breaking In‘s current reinstatement may have been a behind-the-scenes forgone conclusion.

While the 13-episode order is great news to fans, the question undoubtedly on everyone’s mind is: why the turnaround after supposedly canceling the program?

After performing well while following American Idol, Breaking In lost nearly half of its audience after losing the high-profile lead in, and, as Fox was intending to bring in four new sitcoms for a 2-hour comedy block, the network stated it simply didn’t have room in its schedule for the modestly performing show.

However, because the network was courting Goldberg for a shot at his newest series – a yet-untitled family comedy set in the ‘80s – the resurrection of Breaking In became something of an incentive to coax the creator into bringing more of his ideas to FOX.

Apparently, the deal worked.

The return of Breaking In will result in additional work for more than just Goldberg; Odette Annable will be working double-time at FOX as well. In between the supposed demise and subsequent revival of the show, the actress signed on with Fox’s hit drama House, as a series regular. Conveniently, Annable’s contract with House allowed her room to maneuver between the two shows – again suggesting Breaking In was never far from the network’s consideration.

With an order for 13 episodes later this year, Breaking In will have the additional benefit of increased media attention surrounding its miraculous recovery.

Look for Breaking In on Fox sometime midseason.

  1. Fox finally did something right…again.

  2. Very cool news. And I’m glad the whole cast will be back. It was (is) an entertaining show.

  3. i really enjoyed the show, was really really sad when i heard it was canceled. Now its back on!!! :)

  4. Chuffed. It is a great show.

  5. Glad to see Breaking In is getting another chance. I was starting to feel bad for Brett Harrison, it seemed like every show he was in got canned. “In the Loop”, “Reaper”, and then “Breaking In” it looked like he’d never get a decent shot at success in tv land.

  6. Absolutely the best news for ages! Loved the show, it got funnier and funnier with each episode.

  7. Now if they could only bring back Human Target from the television grave yard I would be a happy guy. At least fringe is still on.

  8. Sweet More Lex LOL

  9. What a twist

  10. Unfortunately I can’t get it down here in Australia and must resort to obtaining it with other means, However I loved this show, glad it’s back on.
