Lee Pace in Negotiations to Join ‘Breaking Dawn’

When director Bill Condon signed on to direct Breaking Dawn, the two-part final chapter in the Twilight Saga, he inherited a cast predominantly made up of actors chosen by other filmmakers. EW is reporting that Condon has now made his first casting contribution to the franchise and that actor Lee Pace is in negotiations to join Breaking Dawn.

Pace is probably best known for his role on the short-lived television series Pushing Daisies, where he played a pie maker with the unique ability to bring dead things back to life with his touch. He was most recently seen in this summer’s live-action adaptation of Marmaduke (sigh) and has also had supporting roles in A Single Man and When In Rome.

While Summit Entertainment has yet to officially confirm his involvement with Breaking Dawn, Pace evidently became their top pick for the role of Garrett after an impressive audition. I’m not even going to pretend I know anything about that character, but apparently EW‘s description of him being Edward’s best friend is incorrect. Fans were quick to point out that Garrett is actually a nomadic vampire who helps the Cullen clan take on the Volturi. I hope that makes sense to our resident Twi-hards because it certainly doesn’t mean a thing to me.

My ignorance of all things Twilight aside, I think Pace is a talented actor who’s one good role away from being a much bigger deal. If nothing else, Breaking Dawn would provide him a far greater level of exposure than anything he’s done previously. I’ve only recently been introduced to Pushing Daisies but it’s a really entertaining show and Pace is a big part of that.

The Twilight movies are an easy target for anyone outside of its core fan base but there’s no denying it means an awful lot to a great number of people. I couldn’t even get through more than a couple minutes of the first two movies, but apparently Eclipse was a much better effort than its predecessors. ┬áCondon’s involvement with Breaking Dawn suggests similar improvements may be in store for the final two-part entry. For those of you familiar with the books, do you think Pace is a good choice for Garrett?

The first part of Breaking Dawn hits theaters on November 18th, 2011. Part 2 arrives in November 2012.

  1. I definitely think that Lee deserves the recognition he would get from being in the Twilight series. He is an excellent actor (especially in “The Fall”) and roles like the one in Marmaduke are definitely below his skill level. If he were in Breaking Dawn, better roles could open up for him. I personally would like to see him in a super-hero movie, or better yet in a “Pushing Daisies” movie, if they ever decide to make one.

  2. I’ve read the book and I have no idea who Garret is. Must not be that big of a part

    • evan
garret is the vampire who stays with kate after she shoks him.

  3. Pace is AMAZING for Garrett and I hope this rumor turns out to be true. We need some good actors for this franchise. RPats, KStew & TLauts are as horrible in these movies as their ridiculous nicknames.

  4. Lee Pace would be very cool for Garrett. Garrett is a side character that comes in to help the Cullens beat the Volturi, but he plays a pretty pivotal role as said side character. Out of all the vampires the Cullens gather to help, Garret is one of about 4 that really take a center stage. He also has a lot of interaction with many of the other gathered nomadic vampires. If he does get the part, hopefully they’ll focus more on Garrett as Pace is an amazing actor.

    • Is he that guy who manipulates the elements? I just read through all of the books, but don’t recall exact names…

      • That’s Benjamin that can influence the elements, Garrett doesn’t have any powers per say, but he speaks his mind and basically tells The Volutri they’re a bunch of a$$holes. He also is the one who falls for Kate form the Denali clan.

  5. every time i read breking dawn split i get pissed…..OMFG,i want it to end NOW!!!

    • ^^this.
I don’t know how many times I wanted to rip out the middle part of that book just so that I could get to the end. It just drags on and on and onnnnn..

      • you could’ve just stopped reading it lol

  6. I think that he would be absolutely great in the Breaking Dawn movies, or just about any movie really. I am in love with the Pushing Daisies series and a big part of that is because of him. He seems very natural in his character and delivers his lines like a pro. I really hope all the best for him and his career! And if anyone needs a whimsical, dark, warm-hearted and entertaining series to start then check out Pushing Daisies. Its very unique and the attention to detail is amazing.

  7. If they’re casting for Garrett, it must be for Part 2 then? If they split it right after Bella turns it would make sense. I really hope Stephanie Meyer continues with another book, there’s still a lot to be told (Jacob/Renesme) (Charlie/Sue), etc.

  8. Breaking Dawn was a long book, however one third of it was Jacobs internal monologue. How do they plan on portraying this on film? Will he be talking to himself a lot? There is quite siply not enogh action/events occuring in this book to warrant 2 seperate movies. Twilight fans prepare yourselves for a considerable amount of filler.

  9. Lee is too good to play in such a cheap movie. He deserves more.

  10. i really love him in ‘The Fall”…his best movie so far.
can’t wait to see him in BD.
