Bill Condon Talks To Fans About ‘Breaking Dawn’

Published 4 years ago by , Updated June 27th, 2013 at 3:09 pm,

Bill Condon, director of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, has reached out to fans with an open letter on his Facebook page to show that he is immersing himself in Stephenie Meyer’s world of vampires and werewolves.

When it was announced that Bill Condon would direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn I’m sure that most Twilight fans thought, “Who cares who directs this thing – I only want to see Edward, Bella and Jacob on the big screen.” The rest of us probably thought “Why is an Oscar-winning writer/director slumming it dipping his foot into such commercial waters?

Well, who am I to judge? Condon has directed low-rent genre films (Candyman 2), tentpole genre films (Dreamgirls) and the most excellent Gods and Monsters, a film about the final days of James Whale, the director of Universal’s Frankenstein. He’s a man of varying tastes, to say the least.

Condon reached out to Twilight fans via his face book page to “talk” to fans and let them know what’s going on with the development of Breaking Dawn.

Here is his open letter:

“Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,

I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I’m stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you’ve probably heard, I’ve been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit – who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.

I’m pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I’ve read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine’s and Chris’s movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine’s notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz’s companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk – a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for “newborn” status in the universe you’ve been living inside for a few years now, but a guy’s gotta start somewhere.

Like many of you, I’ve always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn’t been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making GODS AND MONSTERS thirteen years ago, however, I’ve been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.

The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don’t think it’s difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy – and it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.

I’m a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?

Please feel free to ask questions in the comments section below, and I’ll do my best to answer them. I hope that this will be the first of many occasions I’ll get to check in with you as we set to work bringing BREAKING DAWN to the screen. I am excited and grateful to have all of you alongside me for my TWILIGHT journey.

All best,

Bill Condon

P.S. Answer #1: No, there won’t be any musical numbers”

It seems that Condon is really doing his homework for the project, although you’d expect as much if he’s adapting a book into a major franchise film. If the film doesn’t meet fan expectations then there will be a Twi-hard equivalent of a fatwa on Condon’s head.

Although, I’m also pretty sure that quite a few people would forgive him as long as they can stare at Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner for ninety minutes!

Breaking Dawn pt 1 and pt. 2 will be in theaters sometime in 2011.

  11. after watching eclipse i was a bit un-happy with how the vampires died *diamond insides*, granted i realise that you had no link with the direction of eclipse i am just wondering on you will approach the deaths of vampires.
and my second question is what age certificate will this film carry out, because some scenes could potentially be spoiled with a young certificate, the scenes i am thinking about is The Birth, fightings scenes and Esme’s island scene?

  12. Hello Bill Condon, I would like to go for the the audition, could you please tell me when and where the place for the casting of twilight saga breaking dawn. Thank you and I hope you can reply me as soon as possible. Regards, anya

  13. Dear Bill,
I have seen all three films for the first time this summer and one reflection for the coming Breaking Dawn is that you must make sure Robert Pattinson gets the same styling as in the first movie Twilight. He looked quite older in New Moon (slightly younger in Eclipse though due to the fact that he got rid of the suit wardrobe and also got back a bit of the reddish in his hair). His sidebars has grown out of proportions though, with 1 cm for each film, pls make sure they are shorter. He looks more like 25-27 yrs than 17. I red in an article that Robert did not like the “styled” hair in first Twilight, but the fans loved the look, and it made him look the correct age, so…… If not for the age perspective, it is also more true to the fact that vampires are unable to change their looks ;). / Best rgds, Maria

  14. Hey!

  16. Hello Bill,

The Twilight series spans such a wide audience– ranging from young Teens to Middle-aged moms (like myself). So, with that said, I was wondering if the movies will have a bit more of an adult feel to them –especially considering the material in Breaking Dawn. I was also curious as to why some of the scences were changed and not an exact “replica” of the book .. As a reader and lover of the characters -you really notice when the movies do not follow the books–

Overall, for many of us, who need something to escape into, to relieve some of the monotony of our daily lives, these books and movies are wonderful .. It is always fun to jump into a world that is more exciting and dynamic than your own.. I think that is perhaps why many of us love the intriguing world vampires. The fact that there is a love story makes it even better.. :)

I think the Twlight series has become better with each movie and I am looking forward to next two installments of Breaking Dawn.. I hope it is as beautiful and encapsulating as the books..

    Renee

  17. Hi Bill, I’m a big fan of twilight but i was just wondering in the second part of Breaking Dawn are you going to have an older version of Renesmee because maybe it will add more effect to the storyline as it will give Jacob( Taylor Lautner) something to work with?
But not an older girl maybe like 13/14 ?
if your having auditions where Because i live in England and its harder to audition.
    Thanks
    Emma.

  18. Hi bill,I’m a big fan of the twilight-saga! And wanted to ask: could you tell me when there are going to be auditions for breaking dawn or where we can send audition videos in?
    That would be very nice!
    Thanks Melanie

  19. Hi Bill, I am such a fan of Twilight and my only wish is that the release time between the two movies Breaking Dawn can be shorter. I’ve read all the books about 5 times because everytime I read the books I make new discoveries. I agree that Edward should look more young like the first movie of Twilight. His side burns were too long in Eclipse. Bella needs to have her natural hair and not a wig. In fact, the whole Cullen family needs to look like the first and second movies.
    I cant wait!

  20. Hi Bill
    Um…….
I have a suggestion for the movie I don’t think you will be reading this but if you do/are for the first night that Bella and Edward are married I think that the song TEENAGE DREAM by Katy Perry should be playing. It is just a thought/suggestion.
    Congratulations Bill
    Ecila

  21. Hi Bill,

Did you realize what you were getting into with the comments (promising responses)??? Question for you, my daughter (7) auditioned for the role of Renesmee (last week). I think she would be great–she has the chocolate brown eyes, fair skin and ringlet curls like she is supposed to have–although her hair isn’t waist length. She is 7 but looks about 5–has a baby face–she is smart and takes direction well. Her audition was great but the CD wasn’t sure if she is the right look–he is forwarding her audition to production. FYI-you can identify her by her unusual name (a metal). What are you looking for in casting Renesmee?

  22. hi. you probably get stuff like this alot. im not one of them. i really want to be renesmee. i am 11 years old and i am quite small for my age. i live in england. i have brown hair and grey-blue eyes. me dream job is to be an actress and i thought its worth a try. i sit there for hours on my laptop looking for jobs. i cant seem to find anything. if you read this dont think its a stupid fan and forget about this. kristen sstewart started acting when she was young. why cant i?????

    • Emma i know excatly what you are talking about im 13 and ever since i was 8 i always said i wanted to be an actress and i spen ours a day since i was 11 searching for how that could happen. I mean if Kristen and so many other people have started young then why cant we right? I’m just glad that i know there someone out there that knows what i feel because this is my biggest passion ever. =)

  23. Hey Every one There is a really great singer who’s songs would be great in the movies his name is Stan Walker, look him up on youtube. He is amazing young singer and his song Choose you, is great.

  24. Hi Bill
Can you please post your real fan e-mail address??? PLEASE? i really want to send you a letter that i wrote for the last 2 days but i cant get your address so can you please post it? thanks

  25. I really think you should consider the following song for Breaking Dawn. Two of my students just started a band and I think they did an amazing job writing the lyrics and music and would fit in so beautifully with the movie. I have read Breaking Dawn twice and reading it for the third time right now, and I can honestly here this song in the background! Hope you get a chance to take a look! All the best and look forward to seeing your creativity when the new film comes out next year!
Here is their song (“I’m Wide Open” by The Two Steps Back):

  26. The final book is huge, possibly the most developed and well written of the series, and it is full of different interesting episodes. Which ones will you cut? Which ones will you work into the screenplay? I encourage you to “feed” the fan base by making the movie long. Two and a half hours (or longer) is not too long when there is a lot of material to be covered (witness “Titanic,” which was a one trick pony in comparison). The readers of the Twilight Saga will love you for it, watch the movie more than once, and create plenty of revenue for the producers, etc.

Hoping you have a good screenplay that will satisfy the most ardent fans and paint a complete picture of what occurs in the final volume of the Twilight Saga.

  27. Hi,My names Lauren. I just don’t think you should end twilight after creating these last two episodes. I’m a HUGE fan and I was and still am extremely disappointed as you’re films are really good. I just think that it’s just not worth ending twilight. if anything you should just go on a break for a year a two then start making another one. If you don’t want to use the same storyline, change it. BUT I strongly believe that if you end twilight that your fans would just think it was a waste of time watching them as you didn’t make any-more episodes. PLEASE DON’T END TWILIGHT. Its SO interesting. I’ve watched the all the films & Loved them all. You should make many more. As its just started to build up into a more of a story with Edward and Bella just beginning to have a real connection. PLEASE PLEASE DON’T END TWILIGHT TOO many people would be disappointed.

  28. Please, please I beg of you that you release Breaking Dawn Part 2 very soon! Last night I experienced one of the best movies I have ever seen. I know that other twilight fan’s like myself, would really appreciate for the movie to be released at least sometime in early 2012, not in late november! We have waited years to see this movie and finally being able to watch Breaking Dawn Part 1, really really motivated me to ask you the directors and supporters of MTV to think of us… the fans!… like you always do! But we are CRAVING for Part 2 already! Please when you can let us know when the release date for Part 2 is set!

  29. I’m all for freedom of expression, but if you add all these unecessary things to movies based off of books (i.e. Breaking Dawn), then you’re sure to piss off acouple people. I am one of those people! Part 1 steered away from half the things i fell in love with in the book and alot of unecessary scenes were added. it didn’t make sense. And it was WAAYYYYYYY too corny. I went to go see an action-vampire-werewolf-drama movie with just a hint of romance. Not romance every signle second!!!! The added lines were too cheesey, the music was WAAYYYY over the top on the corny scale, and in the end i left the movie theater unsatified and wanting my money back. I urge you, PLEASEEEE make part 2 ten times better then part 1 or please just don’t direct it!
