Even with reviews of a slow start, fans still tuned in to last Sunday’s third season premiere of Breaking Bad. The episode proved to be a ratings juggernaut for AMC, with 2 million viewers tuning in (3.1 million if including the immediate replay), making it the highest-rated episode ever.

If this trend continues, Don and Betty Draper better watch out because Walter White and Jesse Pinkman might soon replace the Mad Men couple as AMC’s newest sweethearts. Breaking Bad not only showed a double-digit increase in all demographics, but also a 63% total ratings increase since the series premiered in 2008. And it doesn’t seem like anything will be able to stop Heisenberg.

While the Breaking Bad season 3 premiere was arguably flawed, the second and third episodes really help to return things back to the high-quality storytelling that fans have become accustomed to. With the reveal of who the mysterious men are and why they’re looking for Walter – plus the return of many familiar faces – I’m hoping the subsequent episodes will draw just as many, if not more, viewers than the premiere.

Unless something extremely drastic occurs, there’s no doubt that AMC will renew Breaking Bad for a fourth season. Although, one has to question how long they plan on continuing the series. Despite a consistent increase in ratings, the story of Walter White is somewhat coming to a close.

With Walter’s cancer in remission and his obvious intentions to get out of the drug trade, there’s only so many ways that you can continue to pull him back into the thick of it before viewers start getting bored with storylines that seem all to familiar to ones of previous seasons.breaking bad ratings record Breaking Bad Season 3 Premiere Breaks Ratings Record

I’m not saying that’s where the series currently is or that’s where they’ll be next year, but I honestly don’t expect Breaking Bad to go past six seasons. If anything, it looks like they could wrap things up nicely with a fifth and finale season.

Do you think Breaking Bad could ever overtake Mad Men in the ratings? Are you looking forward to the rest of this season? How long do you think the series can/should last?

Tune in to Breaking Bad Sunday’s @ 10pm on AMC

  1. I faintly remember the creators of Breaking Bad claiming they had a definite story arc plotted out for the entire series, this was around when the series premiered. While I may be mistaken, I think their plans were in line with your thinking, maybe even just the one more fourth season. Maybe you can track down the interview, even though I can't give you any other info to work with.

I'm hoping there isn't a Scarface type melt down on the way. The entire atmosphere of far more broad and unintended consequences stemming from Walter's actions is enthralling enough. There is no need to make him a drug lord, accepting of these consequences. I have a feeling that consequences are going to start hitting very close to home in the current and future season(s).

    • expect him to go scarface with that m40 in the last episode.

      s*** will go cray

  2. Even if their intentions were for a certain number of episodes, things can change when a series becomes popular.

Prison Break was originally developed as a 2 season show, but then it became popular and Fox wanted more.

  3. I think the premiere was outstanding. It had to be a bit slow; but the build-up to the two dudes blowing up the truck after murdering everyone in it, was story telling at its best. I'm thinking that the two dudes are the cousins of Tuco… it's the only thing that makes sense… but we shall see. Love this series.

  4. I don't trust the chicken man. He knows Walter has connections with the DEA and Walter flat out told him that his family is more important than money. Look at his stone cold face in the 3rd season premier. He's totally going to suck Walter back into the game by putting his family at risk!

I don't like the whole god thing that seems to be happening in season 3. Like consequences must occur because of all the bad things Walter did. In reality meth is an extremely addictive hardcore drug that takes lives and ruins families. They use heroin as an example of a “really bad drug” but meth could almost be worst.

  5. i just love breaking bad . walter your the man . ive read the reveiws and on how much longer can the seasons go .you could have him busted and sent to jail and have him have an inside meth lab helped by gards or warrden and the only ones who dont know are prissoner and the outside .also cause drama with other cell mates. because of addiction. ,special privleges, etc.. every thing that would happen if this was really happening in jail. just a thought.

  6. ohhhhhhhhhhhhh my gosh its been such a great tv show to watch..

  7. Don't know if it will overtake Madmen – had the comment from a friend who said when she watches TV it's only light stuff, my sister is the same way – shows like BB can bring up too much real life difficulties, and some people don't like stress with their tv shows.

    • you roll by a car accident. girls just want to cover there eyes, guys wan’t to see the blood and the gore.

human nature, we are designed to see the worst so we are prepared for it.

      also bishes are bishes

  8. Ummm have you seen madmen? If you have then your logic really confuses me

  9. Your tv series is good… as good as mine.

  10. My favourite tv show ever.Vince Gilligan is an absolute genius.
