Forget Krypton! Superman wants to be the hero of Azeroth instead!

It’s no secret that Brandon Routh is a gamer and a long-time player of the most successful MMORPG ever, World of Warcraft.

With his love of the video game, it’s no surprise that with the recent news of Sam Raimi signing on to direct the World of Warcraft film, Routh wants to be a part of it.

As we all know, Brandon Routh’s contract with WB for his role as the Man of Steel in the Superman franchise has expired along with that of director Bryan Singer. They’re going a different direction with Supes and rumors of who may be taking the reins have already began to surface in the aftermath of the latest court ruling on the topic of the ownership of Superman.

Well, Routh’s interest is on something else now anyway. In an interview with MTV, the 29 year-old talked about his excitement about Sam Raimi  being brought on to helm the World of Warcraft film adaptation and his passion for video games.

“They just announced that Sam Raimi is directing, so that’s very cool… My friends over at Legendary are working on that. … So I’m looking forward to what’s going to happen with that.”

When asked about his desire to get asked to be a part of the project, he teased about the fun he could have with the action and sword-fighting.

I’m always a big supporter of folks working on that which they are passionate and respectful of, so I’m all for it if he does get that chance. He’ll have to play a much grittier and harsher character though which we’ve not seem him do yet (assuming he would play some sort of Warrior or Paladin).

This could be the career-defining gig for Routh (replacing Superman Returns) as I believe when a big-budget live action World of Warcraft movie is finally made, it’ll spawn into a franchise with limitless potential and sequel/spinoff opportunities.

This film cannot fail. With 10 million or so people around the world paying monthly subscription fees to continue to play the game, it already has a strong and willing-to-spend fanbase of massive proportions and with all the hype, marketing and word-of-mouth that will accompany this thing, it’s destined to destroy the box-office and bring future installments.

If Routh does get his wish and becomes involved in a lead role, he could have himself a nice and long-lasting franchise to be a part of. It’s not like they can kill him off, they can just use another character to use a resurrection spell on him!

It’s a world so vast and full of different characters, creatures and environments so there are endless stories in endless locales that can be told – It’s about time they start.

If this works out, who knows, maybe we’ll get a Starcraft film someday!

What do you think of the WoW movie, and is there a role for Routh in it?

World of Warcraft is tentatively listed for a 2011 release but it will definitely be delayed. Raimi’s a busy man with Spider-Man 4 scheduled to open that year.

  1. blah, ROuth is just desperate to get his career goin because of the massive failure that was SUperman Returns….I dont see this guy ever making big in holywood, but i can see him in smaller roles…as for the movie, 10 mill pl pay monthly fees to play this game, ubsurd…I hope the movie bombs

  2. That’s a lot of hate in one comment. I personally liked Superman Returns and have enjoyed Routh’s roles. Considering his limited acting experience I would almost say I’m impressed with him.

All that aside, a movie that already has a fan base of 10 million subscribers is a great idea. I hate WoW as much as the next guy, but I do love my fantasy movies. Seeing how Blizzard is known for polished quality products, I hope this translates to the film. I am excited for this one!

  3. Would be cool to have Routh on board for this one. He did a very admirable job imitating Christopher Reeve’s character with a lot of respect, while making the role his own. It wasn’t his fault whatsoever that Superman Returns did not do as well as it did. People just weren’t fond of the script and story.

And he does have the face and size to be a believable and good character in WoW. I would say he even has the face and eyes to be a Night Elf something.

  4. Any one else feel they should just call this movie “Warcraft” and drop the “World of?”

WoW obviously has a built-in fanbase, but it also has a lot of haters. If the film is just called Warcraft (even if the film itself is based completely on World of), it might be able to draw in a larger audience, especially from guys like myself who really got into Warcraft II but haven’t been a fan of the franchise since III.

  5. I’d love to see Routh in this! He has a very heroic look (duh), it’s a big guy, and has the acting chops. And I like fantasy movies!

  6. would he play as Arthas????

    Very Simillar Nose…

  7. As a big fan of Brandon, I hope he gets a role in this movie. Good luck, Brandon!

  8. @ No Name Face,

There’s rumors online that David Wenham (Faramir from Lord of the Rings, Dilios from 300) is in the running for Arthas – I love that guy and although it seems unsubstantiated, it’d be a great pick in my eyes.

  9. Blah @ Tasouli
Routh’s desparate heh, before blowing your mouth off with immature fanboy hatefest, he has 2 upcoming movies coming out and another with Samauel L. Jackson waiting for release, sounds like he doing alright to me. The man jacked like a beast now, he didn’t get a chance to sink his teeth into Superman Returns, this will make up for it.

  10. Routh’s already appearing in a game-inspired movie, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, as a bass player with magic vegan powers. (It’s that sort of movie.) If the movie does well, and he does well in it, it’d be an excellent thing to have on his resume for when Legendary start casting.

  11. @ Rob –

Wenham as Arthas is a very good choice. Where did you hear that one?

  12. Whoa! That’s cool. I liked his role as Superman and for him to be part of Warcraft, why not? He seems to have a great potential to play the heroes in WoW. I bet it’s just not him who wants to be part of WoW movie. I wonder if ever other online games like Aion Online or Perfect World will be in the big screen, would he volunteer himself too?

  13. @ Doom3524,

Actually, he’s listed as a rumour on IMDB (which is usually meaningless) but I’ve heard talk of it on a few websites here and there for a while – probably originated just from fans.

That guys is a star in my mind though so I’m all for it ;)

  14. I say he would be a great Illidan if they could get him into the screenplay, illidan is a really great and complex character…thirst for power, contempt towards his brother, loves tyrande, not a completely bad guy. They would have to figure a way out to keep him around since players kill him in BT.

  19. I would pay to see this film. Heck, if it’s good I’ll buy a DVD! I’d like to see Routh in it, it would be well cool! Gosh, I’d really like to see it, I wonder if it will be a lore story or a new story? Hope it isn’t pushed back too far. I’d like to see him as Varian, that would be cool :P
