World War Z Brad Pitt Brad Pitt Officially Attached To Lead World War Z

A film adaptation of Max Brooks’ 2006 best-selling novel World War Z has been in the works for awhile now, ever since Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, snagged the rights (after battling it out with Leonardo DiCaprio’s company, Appian Way).

Since Pitt’s company is producing the adaptation, along with the fact he’s one of Hollywood’s top leading men, it’s no surprise that his name was being rumored for the lead role in the film. Now MTV Movies Blog has the exclusive on the news that Pitt is officially attached to the project.

MTV got the news straight from World War Z author, Max Brooks, while he was signing copies of the book at the Avatar booth during the preview night of the 2010 Comic-Con. I suppose we should wait until the studio officially announces Pitt’s casting to get too worked up (either in a good or a bad way) about him starring. But if the guy who wrote the book confirms Pitt’s attachment, I think we can assume there’s some weight to it.

World War Z is about a future global war against zombies. It is written in the form of interviews featuring multiple survivor perspectives from all over the world recounting their individual struggles throughout the war.

At first you might think that telling the story in that form takes any sort of mystery out of it. But you might want to step back and look at it in the same way as any other war movie. For instance, we already know what happened in World War II, but that doesn’t stop movies about the events being interesting, now does it?

In related news, Brooks also revealed that on top of World War Z, Plan B has additionally optioned two of his other zombie publications: The Zombie Survival Guide and The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks. The former offers a set of instructions on how to survive a zombie outbreak (put that on your shelf next to your cookbooks and DIY manuals!) while the latter tells of some of the biggest battles against the zombies during the war.

Said Brooks of the World War Z adaptation and the team handling it:

“I can’t believe how cool Paramount has been to me and these projects, and how cool Plan B has been… I’m glad they took their time, and are trying to make the best zombie movie they can. I’m so glad they stayed with the project and so glad they found the right team.”

The World War Z screenplay was originally written by Michael Stracynzki (Babylon 5) but was later rewritten by Matthew Michael Carnahan (State of Play, The Kingdom). Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster is still attached to direct the the zombie war film – you can decide for yourself if he’s the right man for the job after delivering a disappointing Bond film in 2008.

Plan B is aiming for World War Z to be a summer 2012 release. If it does, it will have some stiff summer competition from the likes of Batman 3, Star Trek 2, G.I. Joe 2 and Battleship. I know a zombie war film isn’t exactly playing to the exact same comic book fan audience but there’s definitely a lot of big films being released in Summer 2012 that is has to compete with.

  2. This is absolutely awesome, awesome news!! Ive been waiting to hear news about this film for awhile.I know its been in long development but I never though Brad would lead the film.Ive read some of the book and even though its a zombie genre story, there is a alot of politics during the zombie war.Awesome material and I can wait to see this film.Going to finish the book soon!!

  3. I’m not really sure how to feel about this. It just doesn’t seem like a good idea for a movie, but then again maybe it’s just because I’ve never liked serious zombie movies of any kind. I prefer funny ones like Zombieland.

  4. zombies, vampires etc… just dont do it for me to be hoenst, only zombie film ive ever enjoyed was i am legend. and even that wasnt amazing.

but maybe this could be good? ill get the book from the libary tomoro and find out!

  5. They should be doing a movie about Day by Day Armageddon… Best zombie books period.

  6. World War Z isnt so much a zombie book as it is a human survival story. Its absolutely fascinating to read about how individuals, cities, and countries battle something so completely beyond what anyone would consider a plausable threat. Imagine someone telling you RIGHT NOW there was a zombie invasion, youd think they were crazy. Thats exactly the reaction the world has in the book and the stories are about how the world reacts. VERY well written! I can only hope the movie does the book justice – Im very much looking forward to seeing it!

  7. Even I can’t find anything wrong with this news!

    :-)

    Get er done!

  8. Hope they release it in August. The billboards look emptier then. AHMM,, need fresh meat… ;)

  9. TO ANYONE TIRED OF ZOMBIE MOVIES:

Please pick this book up. It is so much more and trust me if somehow they can really bring this book to the big screen in a way that properly compliments it then it will be a fantastic movie. But that in itself will be a feat. I know we all on here to discuss movies but this book I think deserves a timeout to be read. Good luck Plan B, don’t let us down.

  10. hey… the book was awesome.. i hope they do justice to it.. can anyone suggest any good zombie novel.. not a survival guide but a good novel.. and also.. an outta the topic question.. any good alien invasion book?? can’t find any.. please.. :)

    thanks!!

  11. Tappy read Day by Day Armageddon and its sequel Day by Day Armageddon Beyond Exile. I really liked WWZ and I’m pumped about the news they are making it into a movie. Day by Day is one of those books you just can’t put down. J.L. Bourne is a great writer. His two books are the best zombie books out there IMO.

    • hey man..thanks for the suggestion.. i checked it out on google books.. i’m on page 35 and its pretty gripping till now… cheers !! :)
