Matt Damon On Bourne Legacy & the Future of the Bourne Franchise

Fans of the Bourne franchise are looking forward to seeing what Jeremy Renner brings to the gritty world of assassins, spies and government cover-ups in The Bourne Legacy this summer. With franchise scribe Tony Gilroy at the helm, most feel confident that the film will, at the very least, stay true to the tone that Bourne Identity director Doug Liman, Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass and Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon, established in the first three films.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Damon at Comic-Con 2012 to talk about Elysium, his upcoming science fiction movie with Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9 (stay tuned for the full interview in the coming days). During the course of our discussion, we touched upon the Bourne franchise, his hopes for Bourne Legacy, and what his involvement may be in the future of the franchise.

There’s been talk about you joining Jeremy Renner in Bourne 5. Producer Frank Marshall said that was his dream, recently. Is that something that you’re interested in?

“You know, if they had a script, I mean I’d love it. Paul and I have talked about doing another one for years. We’ve been kind of dancing around it. We just never could find a story that we felt was good enough. And if we could, then we’d do it, and we’d do it in a second. We love the character, we love the world and I’d love to do it. But it’s always been…We don’t want to get into it like ‘Oh, you guys’ll figure it out,’ because then it just means years off of our lives. And the last movie was really, really tough. We had no script and we were making the movie for a release date on the fly. And at that budget it was really terrifying and stressful and there’s no reason to do that.

If there is a great movie to be made, then we can figure it out beforehand and then go make it, the way you always do. You know what I mean? But nobody’s ever come forward with that script, so we’ll see. I mean I want to do it, but we’ll see. We’ll see what happens. I bet this one’ll be a big hit, though.”

Do you mean The Bourne Legacy?

“This one this summer, with Jeremy(Renner), yeah. He’s awesome, and you know, he’s one of my favorite actors and I believe him in that world. You know, when Paul and I talked about maybe doing one, years ago, where we pass it off to somebody so the franchise can continue with someone else, Renner was the first guy that we talked about.”

It’s a nice coincidence that Damon and Greengrass apparently had faith in Renner before he was even considered for the role of Aaron Cross in Bourne Legacy. Ultimately, the film will provide the Bourne franchise with fresh faces, a new (albeit familiar enough) story, and hopefully some fresh creative spin on the action, as envisioned by Tony Gilroy. Not a bad proposition.

The Bourne Legacy opens in theaters on August 10th.

  1. I am a huge fan of the Bourne series. I have read all three books, and the original storyline has been altered so much that the plot is hardly recognizable. If you watch Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum, and Legacy expecting to see anything close to the book, you will be very disappointed. In the book, “The Bourne Legacy” Jason is still in it, in the movie, he is not. If you are a Bourne fan, don’t bother.

    • I do not agree! A matter of opinion, but I liked the Legacy and feel
It followed the jist of the original story very well! If you like that
kind of movie, it was great! Keeps you right there the whole time.

  2. f*** Jeremy renner I know him and he’s a prick he and I had a freestyle battle once and he got too personal on me but his flow was descent

    • I do not think you know… the Jeremy Renner you are referring to is an actor not a rapper. Love those timely Princess Bride references. By the way… your comment is INCONCEIVABLE.

  3. Matt damon, best Jason Bourne ever. But it’s always good to give someone else the spot light

  4. Jeremy renner, ya, a good actor but not as damon. he,s not perfect for bourne series. matt damon is the best! and if anyone compare the acting of both in the movie, i,ll say damon is thousand times better than jeremy. actualy damon realy borned for bourne.

  5. I believe the series is just fine. There is Bourne first gen and there is Cross second gen. They are both important to the development of the franchise. In Legacy there is the scene where Bourne is reported alive and mobile. Then you have Pamela Landy who is now accused of being a traitor.

At the bare minimum I see two more movies. One more program going south with more development of the political story and the last movie showing split screens of the three alone in their battle through the sticks(possibly meeting and joining forces close to the end) to get to capital hill and testify with the shadow government doing everthing in their power to stop them. Cross was viraled off, so it makes this possible.

I can see another where they team up to finally identify somebody at the head of it all that to date has not been revealed.

A lot of options here. They are just keeping people guessing.

  6. Matt Damon is the only Jason Bourne I’ll ever accept.

    • So true! Matt Damon! Bourne 2 b Bourne! The Legacy was disappointing!
      Come back Matt solo!

    • Except Jeremy Renner doesn’t play Jason Bourne. Glad you watched the movie, though : )

    • Jeremy Renner did not play Bourne, he played Aaron Cross. I loved “Legacy” just as much as I loved Damon’s turn as Bourne. There is always room for expansion, and I thought “Legacy” did that quite well. While yes Matt Damon is the only Jason Bourne anyone will ever accept. Jeremy Renner is the only Aaron Cross I’ll accept.

  7. You gotta remember Damon didn’t use pills and Jeremy did until they locked it in, so in real life on the movie, Jeremy would be physically and mentally better than Matt, making the characters hard to intertwine. One good and and the other enhanced. How do you make that work. So Matt was just talking about this in an interview. It’s going to make it hard to come back now the two won’t be equal.

  8. This movie rocks. Tony Gilroy stepped up from writing to also directing this installment, and I have to say I enjoyed it. Forget all these critics talking like insiders and getting butthurt that this feels like some attempt to just make a cashcow out of the franchise. THAT’S BUSINESS, FOLKS. And although Bourne Legacy isn’t “necessary”, it’s downright entertaining and has better acting on display in it than in the actual Bourne trilogy (Rachel Weisz, folks – and Renner making a more personable killing machine than Damon). Alright – so some of the plot points rehash elements from the earlier trilogy – does anyone remember how much the ‘Bourne Ultimatum’, which is referred to as the best ‘Bourne’ movie, just rehashed elements from ‘Identity’ and ‘Supremacy’? Wasn’t a problem back then, huh? And THAT movie was filmed in a hurry with a script being written while shooting was happening just to make the release date, AND EVERYONE STILL LOVED IT. I give mad props to Gilroy, Renner, Weisz, Norton and the entire production crew because they make these characters so three-dimensional, which was an aspect I felt sometimes lacking in the other installments. AND I LOVE THE BOURNE TRILOGY. Plus, it doesn’t have that jittery camerawork and luxuriates in the story it has to tell.

FACE IT: THIS MOVIE ROCKS. If Damon returns as Bourne, more power to him. If he don’t, this movie shows there are still more stories to tell from this vantage point.

    • Can I marry this post? I loved “Legacy” just as much as I loved the first three Bourne films. There’s no need for anyone to get all pissy about “Legacy” not being ‘Bourne’. The point is Cross wasn’t supposed to be Bourne. Loved your post.

  9. This is the best entertainment coming out of movies land ever. Both Damon and Renner are great this is hard to dispute.
Matt Damon did an incredible job first but take nothing away form Renner he is as good coming in last. I hope another 2 and maybe 3 movies will come from this, I will pray.

  10. I love the series, but would be extremely disappointed not to see Matt Damon’s character in some future movie return. To leave Matt swimming away in the east river, never knowing what became of him really is a let down. Not ever knowing if Nikky Parson’s smile at the end of three has some real meaning, to leave Matt’s fans hanging with this would be sinful.
