Bourne 41 Update On Bourne Legacy Actor Shortlist

Although Matt Damon won’t be appearing in Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy, the film will maintain the continuity of the Bourne trilogy and revolve around an all-new deadly agent instead. Reports were in last month that Gilroy would be meeting with numerous candidates for the lead role, which is considered one of the hottest for up-and-coming actors right now.

Now it seems that the field has been narrowed down to four young men, who will be testing for Bourne 4 beginning in April – and for those who were concerned, you can take comfort in the knowledge that stars like Shia LaBeouf and Robert Pattinson are not among their ranks.

Deadline says that the current pack of actors set to test so far includes Dominic Cooper (The Escapist), Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom), Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans), and Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy). Logan Marshall-Green (Devil) is speculated as being a potential candidate as well, along with Taylor Kitsch (Wolverine).

Edgerton is starring in this year’s Thing prequel, and Evans may have appeared in three separate action-adventure titles – Immortals, The Raven, and The Three Musketeers – before the year is out.

Marshall-Green recently signed on as the male lead in Prometheus and Cooper will play a supporting role in next year’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Kitsch is also set to show off his leading man chops in 2012 with Peter Berg’s Battleship.

Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn in Tron Legacy Update On Bourne Legacy Actor Shortlist

Hedlund in 'TRON: Legacy'

Hedlund is the only actor of this lot who is not yet locked to appear in any tentpole pics or big-budget blockbusters over the next two years. He’s shortlisted for the Akira remake as Kaneda, which is in some ways a role that’s easier to picture Hedlund taking-on than that of an efficient killing machine. To be fair, though, the same could’ve easily been said about Damon prior to his signing on as Jason Bourne – and we all know what an excellent bit of casting that turned out to be.

Given the options, there’s not really one actor that stands head above the others to star in Bourne Legacy – for me, that is. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses as performers, have already proven to be adequate in roles that were either physically-demanding and/or emotionally intense, and seem equally qualified to play “the new Bourne,” so to speak. What do you think?

The Bourne Legacy is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters on August 3rd, 2012.

  1. I wish they’d leave bourne alone. Ultimatum was such a good ending, that I can’t see the point in doing a 4 without Jason. I am just confused on the whole things.

  2. Dominic Cooper would be my choice, but honestly, I don’t understand the point of this film at all. I could understand them replacing Damon in the role, they do it with Bond all the time, but what is this film? A sequel with the Bourne name that doesnt feature Bourne? Baffles me.
Only the first Bourne was great anyway, the second two were fairly poor and suffered from excessive Greengrass syndrome.

  3. I dont see the point of doing this film but i think Ryan Phillippe would be a good choice(I know he’s no listed!!)

  4. If it doesnt have Matt Damon in it then I would consider going to see it.

    • @aleric dont u know the best thing about the bourne movies was matt damon, are u sure u’v even watched them

      • For real.

  5. i really don’t see a Bourne movie without Matt Damon. Since they are dead set on making this, why does Legacy have to focus on a guy? They could the back story of Juila Stiles character.

  6. Changing the existing storyline does not really matter as the movie anyways are nothing like the novels. I mean they’ve just lifted the titles and brought in their own story elements. No resemblance whatsoever. So it doesn’t matter at all if they bring in new stuff and characters in the fourth.

I’m not saying I’m not a fan of the movies. I did like them.

  7. There’s no point of having Bourne in the title if he’s not even in the movie. Without Damon there is no need for me to watch it.

  8. very bad move on the studio’s part not to involve matt damon and then perhaps introduce an actor that is upcoming but also almost as talented.
this franchise is about to take a HUGE step backwards, with DAMON somehow involved i just dont see it being great without him.

  9. No Damon equals I’m NOT seeing this movie.

  10. If Damon not interested in doing this, then I don’t see why I should be either.
Don’t try to keep milking something that was good, just leave it alone and come up with some thing new, and original.

  11. the original bourne trilogy is excellent but they need to stop milking it our -.-

  12. Definitely not interested in seeing this if Damon and Greengrass are not involved.

  13. sorry matt damon will always be jason bourne
its probably one of the most successful movies and they’re trying to make it a franchise??!!

i hope they dont ruin it because i will be pissed!

  14. I reckon they should bring Roger Moore in, after all he replaced the other spy guy and made it just as successful :)

  15. I don’t understand this ‘only Damon can be Bourne’ that’s like saying only Sean Connery can be James Bond.
Besides, they aren’t replacing Damon as Bourne, this is going to be about a new character, that’s why it’s a ludicrous waste of time.

  16. I believe this will be a solid movie cuz its written by Gilroy who wrote the first three…To me, Tokyo Drift n xXx 2 r lack on story-telling nt replacement of character…

  17. How about Paul Walker????? it really sucks that Matt will not be doing it… not sure I will even watch it, kind of like Rocky with out Stallone!

  18. Can’t imagine a Bourne moving without Matt Damon. I have been secretly hoping for a 4th movie….and have it callede “Bourne Again”. LOL

  19. or Bourne Free…. And they should move away from Jason Bourne as far as the main character and off set it to another agent maybe leaving Matt Damon a chance to come back….. just kicking some thoughts around!

  20. Simple as this: Bourne’s trilogy was successful because of Damon’s role execution plus the coherent sequence of the story from the beggining until the end, because they wanted it that way and I think thats what made it so interesting, as a very nice production with an start and an end of story, not an annoying never-ending lack-of-substance heroe story as JB (I’m sorry, I do like Bond’s movies, but au contraire than Bourne ones, are nothing but an endless full of action situations without a solid personal background for the main character). That’s what Rocky shares wuth Bourne, a well defined personification of the actor to the character.
In short words, seems like an abuse from the owners of the franchaise to an already succesful and nicely steady located in the mind of the followers of the story.
History never lies: was ‘Tokio Drift’ as succesful as others those F&F versions? no, and fairly, Bourne’s has much more substance as story than F&F franchise.
