Matt Damon Jeremy Renner Aaron Cross Bourne 5 Rumor Patrol: Bourne 5 Delayed So Matt Damon Can Return [Updated]

[Update for Sept 16, 2014: It's true! Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are back for Bourne 5]

Ever since Universal Pictures decided to continue the Bourne franchise with Jeremy Renner as its new lead, moviegoers couldn’t help but think about how cool it would be to see his character team up with Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon. In the two years since The Bourne Legacy hit theaters however, Damon – star of the original Bourne trilogy - has been doubtful of the chances of his return but not from lack of interest.

Damon and director Paul Greengrass haven’t been able to come up with a story involving the return of Jason Bourne that makes sense, and not even Jonathan Nolan – whom Damon asked for ideas – could crack it either. Perhaps director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) and writer Andrew Baldwin – both new to the Bourne franchise – found the right formula because Latino-Review is reporting confidently from their most trusted source that Matt Damon will indeed be back for the untitled Bourne 5.

It was just yesterday that we learned Universal had pushed back Bourne 5 from summer 2015 to summer 2016 and according to the scoop, it’s so they could fit in Matt Damon. A new director, new writer and the team-up of Renner and Damon might just be what the franchise needs after mediocre reviews for Legacy and a less impressive box office haul.

Renner has made a name for himself in recent years jumping into key roles in major existing franchises, all of which have earned followups for him to return – from playing Hawkeye in The Avengers and its upcoming sequel, to becoming another agent in the Mission: Impossible series alongside Tom Cruise. He knows action, he’s been nominated twice for Oscars, and Damon has consistently praised him, even admitting to suggesting Renner as a replacement for Bourne.

There were rumors late last year that Universal was in negotiations with Damon (and Greengrass) to return and as early last month the star still claimed he was open to it, depending no the story. Are you game to see Aaron Cross and Jason Bourne team-up on screen?

  1. YES!

  2. This is bull, like some other reports br Latino Review, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Bourne 5 was delayed because Renner has to film MI: 5, as well as completing whatever he has left to do for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

    • Two huge films, not to mention starring in Hansel & Gretel 2 which comes out in early 2016…..way too much to star in Bourne before 2016 as well.

    • Yes would have called it bull two years back, but! Damon needs a hit, and fast.

  3. Let it be true!

  4. Why not ? Two are better than one. I like them both. Go for it!

  5. Come 2016, Jason Bourne franchise will need all the stars it can get.
What with Cap3 and BvS releasing that same summer.

  6. I would LOVE to see them team up!! Yes, please!!!!!

  7. I would call this BS, but the fact that Universal has chosen to have this movie go up against ICE AGE 5, it must have SOMETHING up its sleeve to believe it can go toe to toe with that box office giant.

Justin Lin is also extremely good with directing a lot of top dollar talent at once and giving them all good screen time. Perhaps he had a story that worked.

    • Can’t tell if being sarcastic or…

      • I don’t know if you’ve noticed but the first four Ice Ages have opened at the top spot.

Unless you’re jabbing at the Justin Lin remark in which case I would maybe have to agree with you. Lots of characters in Fast 5 and 6 and I didn’t really connect with any of them. The action scenes were great though and more than made up for any plot deficiencies imho. Sidenote: he also directed “Modern Warfare” which is one of my favorite episodes of Community.

        We’ll see what happens.

  8. The Bourne Resurrection.

  9. “Bourne Again”? Well, none of the other movies have done that much for me, but they are watchable, so I will likely watch this one on Netflix when available (same applis for the Mission Impossible movies….meh but I’ll watch).

    • Did you watch Ghost Protocall? That was actually a great blockbuster. Very fun, awesome effects, and a good cast. Watch it whenever I can.

  10. please,do….

  11. Yes, this would honestly be great. Tbh, its something I though Cross would look into and try and find Bourne.

  12. Hmm…the 2016 movie slate is filling up fast with some really awesome titles.

Hey ScreenRant, do you guys have a list of known (or ‘almost positively known’) movie release dates for 2016 yet? Which one’s are your favorites?

  13. They should come up with a better story this time. Legacy was good, but if you ask me any of the films from the original trilogy blow it out of the water. I did a quick imdb search and it seems that Legacy had the same screenwriters (or at least 1 of the same screenwriters) as the Bourne trilogy had. Perhaps the trilogy just had better source material to draw from, which is why I say story story story!! If they focus on writing an awesome story then that will translate to an awesome movie.

  14. would Julia Stiles be back too?

  15. RUMOR is my guess, damon himself said he wouldn’t be attached unless greengrass was on board again, unless they have something completely brewing up their sleeve its not happening

  16. Let’s make it happen. Hell, I’ll even write the script if you want

  17. In a fight I’d back Aaron all day, also because he broke Jason’s record on whatever survival course they were doing at the beginning of the movie. But, in a straight fight, Jason might be more ruthless but Aaron would be more streetwise and harder to hit.

    • That depends. In the book ‘bourne legacy’ Jason Bourne fights his son khan who is about 25 years younger than him, and a world renowned assasin and holds his own very well. And he fights Arkadin to a standstill or defeats him. Maybe its different in the movies

  18. Even though I’d rather see just a straight Bourne movie I’d be ok with them teaming up. Just getting Jason back in the movies is a win.

  19. Hey that’s not Damon in the picture – it’s Wahlberg. And talking about him, would love to see Shooter 2.

  20. Yes; why not. That must be wonderful movies.

  21. I would love this rumor to be true! This is one franchise that has gotten better over the years. :-)

  22. I hated Legacy. It just doesn’t bring the same action and story that you expect from a Bourne movie.

  23. Well it’s better to see those two guys team up together I think thats more exciting than the previous four films so its time for them to work as one

  24. CAN’T FIGURE OUT HOW TO BLEND THE TWO THAT MAKES SENSE???? ARE YOU KIDDING?

-”WHAT IS IT THEY DO, THESE ‘MEN YOU SEEK”? -THEY PURSUE THOSE THAT ARE PURSUING THEM TO DESTROY THEM IN CLASSIC CYA FASHION. WHATTYA NEED A ROAD MAP OF COMMONALITY BETWEEN THE TWO CHARACTERS? THERE IT IS-(ALL TO OBVIOUSLY). ASK LUDLUM, HE’D SAY THE SAME THING. THEIR COMMON BOND COULDN’T BE MORE OBVIOUS, HENCE THERE IS YOUR TIE-IN. I SUGGEST THEY STUMBLE INTO EACH OTHER WHILE TRACKING THE NORTON CHARACTER, OR AT SOME LOWER FUNCTIONARIES HOME THEY ARE THERE TO INTERROGATE/KILL. THE TWO ONSCREEN MEETING SHOULD BE BIG-BIG-BIG. I C AN FLESH OUT THE SCRIPT IN A WEEKEND AND FORWARD FOR ANY REVISIONS.
