There are six novels in the series (so far), the first 3 of which were penned by Ludlum (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum). The last 3 were named Legacy, Betrayal, and Sanction and were each written by Eric Van Lustbader. So while the next movie may very well be a stand alone story in the Bourne universe, it certainly will not be without precedent. I am interested to see what they come up with next. I also enjoyed when my mom recently showed me the 1988 television adaption of Identitywhich starred Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith. The 1988 tv movie stays much closer to Ludlum's work than any of the 3 recent films, though all are done well in my opinion. The Bourne series reminds me of The Saint series originally championed by Leslie Charteris in its ability to continually reinvent itself from book, to radio drama, to television, and finally to film. More is obviously not always better, however the people involved with Bourne seem to take their work serious enough that they are not simply churning out high-action drivel in order to turn a buck. With this in mind I am excited to hear that we will get another go at Bourne on the big screen.

loved the three films
but I will not see this one in theater
come on, when you say you're making the last, keep your word
this is just stupid, where are some original ideas? today every film gets a sequel...

well the premise was more or less intact, a search for someone's real "identity" was in place, just taken to a new "scenario". To be honest, the movies were good, gritty fight scenes where people bleed and are pushed to their extremes. I can only imagine that perhaps this time Bourne ends up riding to the rescue of either Joan Allen's character or Julia Stiles'.

Yes you are correct, the books and the movies had almost nothing in common...
