Seems as though we here at Screen Rant have been under some kind of mass hypnosis for the last month; somehow between the entire staff, we are only JUST realizing that we never posted the first trailer for the Hughes Bros.’ post-apocalyptic film The Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. We even covered the film at Comic-Con, but still managed to blank on posting the trailer. Go figure…
By now we’ve all seen the trailer in theaters or posted around the web, but for the sake of blogging record we’re going to post it here for you today. Better late than never, they say…

If you missed our first look at The Book of Eli, the film centers on Eli (Washington), a man wandering the wasteland of America, protecting a book that may hold the key to civilization’s survival. When Eli runs across Carnegie (Oldman), the local “mayor” of a run-down town, Carnegie learns about the book Eli is carrying and makes a power play to possess the book for himself. Of course, Eli isn’t giving it up without a fight (as you saw in the trailer).
The Book of Eli was written by Gary Whitta (rumored screenwriter of the Akira movie), and stars Mila Kunis, Malcom McDowell, Michael Gambon, Jennifer Beals, Ray Stevenson and eccentric music-man, Tom Waits. It’s slated to hit theaters on January 15, 2010.

i cant say that i like denzel that much. havent enjoyed his previous movies, but this one looks promising:)

Denzel is one guy I could never see doing Kung-Fu but he looks really good at it in this trailer. Best scene from the trailer is the fight under the overpass/ in the tunnel where it is light outside and complete darkness inside.

Cool… a Fallout 3 movie…
That’s actually what I thought it was the first time I saw this trailer, which was in the theater (attached to The Hurt Locker)… at first I thought it was for The Road, and then I wondered how they’d gotten a Fallout movie that far into production without my having heard of it. That scene in what looks like a hotel lobby or a bar looks just like Tenpenny Tower or that Russian dude’s house in eastern D.C. or the slavers’ place at Paradise Falls.
Definitely looking forward to this one.
Side note: “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani” — “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” In Matthew and Mark, Jesus says this from the cross. Wonder what significance “Eli” might have in the movie?
For me, I’m watching it for Ray Stevenson, lol. Although Denzel Washington isn’t bad, I kind of find his characters very similar…
I don’t know if this counts as a “tip off” but I would really like to see any information about the upcoming Maximum Ride movie on this site. It’s supposedly coming out in 2010 but I’ve hardly heard anything about it.

As for tip-offs, “Bunraku” is a movie I would like to see, but I haven’t heard much about it. Its got quite a few big names in it too, Josh Hartnett, Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson

I can’t believe these two terrific performers would resort to doing a typical Post-apocalyptic-save-the-world-all-by-myself-by-clearing-the-room-of-all-bad-guys movie.
The money must have been REALLY good.

They have arrows and RPG, much like Rambo does.
They showed a sphynx cat for a post-apolyptic themed movie, cats go bald after a nuclear holocaust… LOL…

Denzel used a gas mask but then later on people can breathe in open air… I guess toxic gas is seasonal.

I agree with the Fallout comments. Surely it can’t be a coincidence that the ambiance and settings and architecture is so very similar.
As for the Sphynx Cat…better not be another Hollywood portrayal of the breed being evil and vicious. In real life they are such sooky babies.
