Ming-Na Wen, star of The Book of Boba Fett, has explained what will set the spin-off apart from The Mandalorian. The Book of Boba Fett was first teased by a post-credits scene in The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale that showed notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and elite mercenary Fennec Shand (Wen) overthrowing Jabba’s Palace and taking the throne. The spin-off series is expected to delve into Boba’s unseen history, exploring the years in-between Return of The Jedi and his reappearance in The Mandalorian season 2.

It was revealed in “Chapter 14: The Tragedy” that Boba had saved Fennec’s life using cybernetics, and as a result, she was now in his service. The two of them ambushed Mando (Pedro Pascal) to demand the return of Boba’s signature Mandalorian armor and ended up being key allies, helping Mando to rescue Grogu from the evil clutches of Moff Gideon. Boba and Fennec have proved themselves to be one of The Mandalorian’s most dynamic and deadly duos, and many fans are excited to see them in action again when The Book of Boba Fett premieres on Disney+ in December 2021.

Now, Wen has teased what makes The Book of Boba Fett distinct from The Mandalorian, and it’s all about the draw of their dynamic duo. In an interview with ComicBook, Wen spoke about the “different quality” that the dynamic between Boba and Fennec brings to the table. The actress also acknowledged that there will probably be “some similarities” to The Mandalorian, which fits with the show being described as “The Mandalorian season 2.5” and the major connections between the two series already teased. Read Wen’s full quote below:

"Probably there will be some similarities. Tonally, you know, Mando is very much a loner except for his relationship with Grogu, so just the dynamic that there's now a team of between Boba and Fennec. I think that already creates a different quality for the show. Yeah, that's about all I can say."

Boba and Fennec are a highly skilled and often lethal team when they work together, so The Book of Boba Fett might end up having twice the assassination action that’s been seen so far in The Mandalorian. As Wen points out, the story of The Mandalorian has largely been driven by Mando and Grogu’s relationship, so focusing on a very different kind of duo is one of the spin-off’s many selling points. The tone of The Book of Boba Fett is also expected to be different, shifting from space western more into crime thriller territory as Boba and Fennec take over Tatooine.

However, given the huge success of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett isn’t likely to stray too far from what makes the Star Wars series so great. Robert Rodriguez is returning to direct multiple episodes, and many Mandalorian characters are expected to appear, so the two shows are likely to stay interconnected in many ways. The genre, tone, and character dynamics may be what sets The Book of Boba Fett apart from The Mandalorian, but fans will have to wait until December to see what truly makes the spin-off series stand out.
