bones season 8 episode 16 Booth Nick

A few weeks ago, Bones stepped outside the conventional procedural box to educate its audience on a very rare and thus far incurable childhood disease known as neurofibromatosis.

Tonight, the story strays from the status quo once again to focus on a different set of victims no less tragic than the last: victims of sexual assault. And where last week's episode focused on Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel), this week they step aside to let others take the spotlight.

The episode begins like any other. A body is found in a revolting state of decomposition and the team at the lab begin the investigation into who the victim is and how they ended up stuffed in a suitcase.

When it's discovered to be a 15-year-old boy, Manny Manicone (Dejon LaQuake Girlando-Howard), the talk turns to whether the cause of death was due to teenage stupidity or if it was plain old murder; unsurprising given that's what happened the last time they found a teenage boy. The case meanders about as usual until midway through when it takes a turn for the serious.

bones season 8 episode 16 sweets

The victim's childhood friend Kat (Lizzie Broadway) is clearly hiding something the first time Booth and Sweets (John Francis Daley) meet her and she eventually ends up seeking out Sweets in his office. After doing her best to swear him to secrecy, she reveals that she was raped the night of the party - the night Manny was killed. Some very poor parenting advice kept her from going to the police and she feels as if it's all her fault.

From here out, it's Sweets' moment to shine. Although he's a legally a mandatory reporter, he doesn't let his concern for the girl stop there. The two share a very moving scene in the atrium of the FBI building when she confronts him for ratting her out. What could have come off as a very preachy, cliched speech about not taking the blame onto herself becomes fabulous when weaved in with details of the abuse in Sweets' background.

This has only ever been touched on one other time in the show but here it fits wonderfully and serves to lend him credence both for Kat and the audience. His determination to see that justice is won for her is moving and it seems only fitting he is given the lead in the scene where Manny is revealed as the protector of her honor, and his friend Nick (Nick Thurston) cops to both the murder and rape.

bones season 8 episode 16 Bren Finn

Alongside all of this, Cam (Tamara Taylor), her daughter Michelle (Tiffany Hines) and intern-of-the-week Finn (Luke Kleintank) learn a lesson or two about honesty. Michelle doesn't inform Cam that she's in town for the weekend so that she can spend time with her boyfriend Finn.

Finn, however, isn't keen on keeping secrets, and in the middle of going over the victim's injuries, he spills the beans and lets Cam know that her daughter is in town. Cam exacts her own revenge, but in the midst of lecturing her daughter about the value of honesty, she admits to a few secrets of her own. It's all tied up rather neatly in the end, though the girls do commit to keeping Finn in the dark about Cam's new boyfriend for the time being.

Again, the case aspects of this episode are what shines brightest, especially the message to young people who have suffered abuse. The end of the episode featured a PSA from Emily Deschanel, urging victims of sexual abuse to seek help from RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network). Viewers can visit the RAINN website and learn more about how writer Dean Lopata worked on this episode.

Bones airs Mondays @8pm on Fox.
