Bones: 100th Episode Review & Discussion

Published 4 years ago by , Updated September 17th, 2012 at 12:05 pm,

Tonight, Fox’s hit anthropological series Bones celebrates its milestone 100th episode and what better way to commemorate such an achievement than to reminisce with the world’s greatest duo, Brennan and Booth, about their first case as they sit down with Sweets to set the record straight about his yet unpublished book about their partnership.

Not only is Bones celebrating an episodic milestone, but also breaking new ground in terms of storytelling as fans of the series will finally see what happens when Booth and Brennan contemplate taking their partnership, and relationship, to the next level.

But… will fans be happy with what results from revealing such strong emotions?

Review

Why waste time beating around the bush? I’ll just say it… The 100th episode of Bones is one of, if not the, best episodes of the entire series.

I’m a lover of information and typically I get my fix from the episodic storylines progressing, but there’s nothing, and I mean nothing, that tops expounding upon information that we already know or, in this case, presume to already know.

Thankfully, Bones delivers on both fronts by not only giving us the first true interaction between Booth, Brennan and the Jeffersonian through the use of a wonderful flashback, but also uses the momentum built through said flashback to further develop the characters in their current incarnation with a heart-wrenching scene that completely caught me off guard.

After 5 seasons, 99 episodes and 70 hours, the moment that Bones fans were waiting for occurs… TWICE! But, in completely different ways. Yes, fans get their moment of passion between Booth and Brennan in the flashback, but when it finally comes time to revisit the emotions that have been building up these past five years, there is no other way to describe what happens than to say it was truly heart-breaking.

As of now, you’ve either seen the episode or know everything that’s going to happen in the episode, so what occurs to you isn’t so much of a shock. But when I originally viewed the 100th episode of Bones a couple weeks ago, I thought that I was sitting down to a normal episode and while the flashback kiss should have tipped me off, I continued to watch unaware of what awaited me in the final moments.

When Booth finally opens his heart to Brennan wanting to take a chance on their relationship, I thought to myself, “It’s finally going to happen!” Then, I see the look in her eyes and my jaw drops. As I’m waiting to hear her say the words I know are coming, all I can’t think is, “Oh my God… this isn’t what’s supposed to happen!”

If you think watching the final scene was rough, try doing it when most of the world hasn’t even seen the episode.

Other than that, having Zach back was amazing and while I don’t believe he left on such good terms, the fact that he came back for the 100th episode truly made it feel like I was stepping back in time… before he decided to go all Gormogon on everyone.

Not to mention that David Boreanaz did a wonderful job directing this episode. While it’s nothing new for actors to jump in the director’s seat, especially on a series that they’ve worked on for many years, Boreanaz deserves credit for tackling such an important episode.

Discussion

What did you think of the 100th episode of Bones? Was it everything hoped it would be?

How great was it to see Zach back? Do you miss having him in the lab?

What do you think about Brennan turning down Booth? How will that impact their relationship?

Is there any way a relationship between the two could work out?

Am I the only one hoping Angela and Hodgins end up together?

Be honest, did you cry?

Am I leaving things out? Sure, but c’mon… how many words do I need to use to say just how great and amazing this episode was?

Wait for it… 672, to be exact.

Watch Bones Thursday night @8pm, on FOX.

If you still can’t get enough of David Boreanaz, check our interview highlights where he talks about how Booth will handle the rejection and what’s to come in the rest of the season.

  1. I feel like dying…this was the most depressing ending of a show that I have EVER seen…I know that they will eventually be together, because, they HAVE to…but GOD, that last scene really hit me hard. That was rough. Great episode though…

  2. It was rediculous!!!! It made me cry and laugh and even sqeak! But during the last two minutes, after seeing Brennans reaction, I was angry! Now how can they ever come together and be a couple? Hopefully Brennan will realize she was wrong and tell Booth that she wants to be with him.

  4. I wanted to kill Bones. What was she thinking? She obviously loves Booth too! And his face was so heartbreaking… And when she asked if they could still work together? No, b**ch! I'm getting reassigned!

  5. I totally cried. I screamed of happiness when he kissed her and gasped when she turned him down. She has to crack at some point…she HAS to. I still have hope! They need to be together. Also, I love that she's the reason he wears the cocky belt buckle, and I miss Zach.

Loved it loved it loved it

  6. Haha… I think with the name “boothlover” we know who's side you're on.

  7. That's amazing… I squeaked too. Maybe we both sat on the same dog toy.

  8. I appreciate unexpected plot twists, etc., but that was terrible!!! I have never missed an episode, & have been holding my breath for this episode…at this point, I don't want to watch it again.

  9. What? Why wouldn't you want to watch anymore?

  10. my heart hurts.

  11. Oh. My. God. My jaw dropped, I laughed, cried, talked to the screen… I loved Boreanaz's acting, felt sad that that she said no, and am really hoping that he does not indeed, “move on.” Jeez, when he said “I know”… Kelly! I squeaked too :D (oh, and somewhere between all this, can't help laugh/feel sorry about the fact that Sweets' book went down the drain!)

  12. I agree. This killed the whole reason why I watched the show. I love the characters, and I love the Booth and Bones relationship!! Its all over now. I really hope they make Bones realizes she loves him or I might find a new show.

  13. Same here.. :'( How could they end the episode like that.. Another two episodes for her to realize she was wrong or I'm done watching it too…

  14. I was very reluctant to see this episode when I heard they were rewriting the beginning of the series and exactly what I feared would happen did. How could they rewrite their history as they did and completely mess with the dynamic? I'm terribly confused and upset about how the entire episode was done. All I could say for 15 minutes was “What was that?” This is an awesome show but this episode should never have happened. Is there an “Easy Button” I can press to undo this episode. It doesn't make any sense with the characters and how their relationship has progressed throughout the series. And she can't be in a relationship because she is a scientist? What? She nearly ran off with Booth's buddy on his sail boat in one episode. I really like this series but I am very distraught and disillusioned with this episode and the fiasco it has caused.

  16. Loved every second of the 100th episode but I feel like the only one who really gets Brennan. She's terrified that starting this whole thing with Booth would end what they have professionally. I respect her choice to love her job more than she loves Booth. All evidence suggests that moving on in a romantic fashion is damaging to them both. Just because a man loves you doesn't require you to love him back.

They're not Scully and Mulder, people. Relax and trust Hart Hanson with his characters.

  17. This was crap!!! I have looked forward to the unleashed passion that you know is between Bones and Booth. So when that final moment comes and this happens!! Nothing!!! Talk about a major downer. I liked the episode due to that it explained so much, but come on, they need a little romance.

  18. Frustrated. Hurt. Uncertain. Drepressed. That's what I'm feeling. I screamed (excited), jumped and pointed, “yayed” tons of times, then there was the “nonononono's” when I saw the look on Bennan's face. Then I screamed (upset), threw a pillow, and in general, cried like a baby. Especially when Booth said he had to move on. *sniff*

Yes, amazing episode, execution wise. David alway directs amazingly, and he probably always will. The writer's choice of doing what they did was the worse thing ever. I know they might just be doing this for more veiwings, and they still could end up together, but I have the horrible feeling they will never get together.

Sweet's was hilarious, and the acting was amazing. I loved seeing into how the team got together, but I wish their ending will be a happy one. I hope Fox fixes the heart aches and bring both Booth and Brennan and Angela and Jack together for the “happily ever after.” Please, Fox? Please give us what we want for once.

  19. Oh, and I do understand what Brennan is talking about. She's damaged and I really believe she loves Booth, but she's afraid she won't be able to love him like he needs to be. It's just soooo sad. :(

    Also, great review!

  20. Good episode, but did you really have to rip not only Booth's heart out but all the viewers too? I feel like Booth and Brennan are turning into Pam and Jim from the Office. If you watch the Office I think we all know that took way too long! All I have to say is you better make up for this heartbreak!
And I miss Zach! He has such an important role with the series. As a to-be-anthropologist there is always that one person in the class who is a “Zach”. He needs to come back!

  21. For the first time ever, I actually sort of hated Brennan. I mean, look at Booth's face when he came out to her! How could you reject that?
However, I do understand how Brennan acted. She's been hurt, and is afraid to give herself to someone. Booth is the guy who needs a who lot of lovin', and I don't believe Brennan has that in her (yet?) to give that love. I really do think that Booth could help her learn to love.
I cheered when they kissed, and almost started to cry when Brennan rejected Booth. Especially when Booth started to tear up! When Booth said he has to move on, all I could say was “NOOOOO!!!”, “Bones, go after him!”. Part of me feels like this isn't over between them, and maybe later in the series the two will revisit their emotions.
Overall, it was a very good show. I cried, laughed, held my breath, and cheered.
I am sad though, this is my second TV couple that didn't end up together- I was pretty upset when (on House) House and Cuddy didn't end up together! Oh please, Bones writers/executives- if Booth and Bones can't be together, can Angela and Jack get back together? Please?

  23. Yeah, but after Pam and Jim got together there was no place to go. They had to get married and have a kid… all of which brought the series down. The show was at its best when Pam was in reception and still dating Jim.

  24. I FEEL LIKE DYING! Is it just me or does anyone else feel like the whole appeal of the show was that tension between Brennan and Booth? THEY KILLED ALL OF MY HOPES AND DREAMS! Right now I am so sad it is ridiculous! I also agree, Angela and Jack NEED to be together. As well as Brennan and Booth. Obviously. This was such a mean thing to do to all of the Bones fans; we have all been anticipating this moment, and if they weren't going to get together then this episode never should have happened. I seriously think that if Booth, as he says “moves on” i will implode.

  25. I am sick of watching this back and forth back and forth crap with them. I want them to be together and be happy and I don't like how she turned him down. At the same time, I do secretly want Angela and Hodgins to be together. I think they deserve to be together. I didn't like this depressing ending to this episode. I don't want Booth to move on.

  26. honeslty this has to be the best episode yet, i squeeked, i squeeled,i almost slid off the couch, i giggled, i almost cried(from both happieness and sadness). The whole episode was great. Even the ending.. not saying it was a happy ending but the way they acted… how it made me feel.. My heart still hurts from watching it. It was heartwrenching. They belong together but shes too scared to admit it. AHH its even worse when you find out booth has a new love intrest ,Rena Sofer. :'( *sniffles* this episode was genious. i just wish they would get together already.

  27. same, i dont think ive ever disliked brennan so much. she hurt booth. but yeah i can understand what she did.. but but but… stilll lmao you cant reject that!

  28. i completely agree! my roommate and i were so confused the entire episode. bones and booth didn't meet this way, they never interacted this way…how could their first meeting be rewritten like this?

  29. Everybody needs to stop hating on our poor anthropologist and the show in general. First, her actions were completly in character. Second, this is the first of many steps that the pair needs to take to reach a romantic relationship, so it is a GOOD thing.

Also want to point out that everybody who is saying such silly things as “Bones needs to come to her senses and realize she is in love with Booth” must have been watching a different 100th episode. She never says that she doesn't love Booth. Her reasons for denying him are that A) she's afraid she'll hurt him because she doesn't know how to act in a serious relationship (“I don't have an open heart like you” or something of that sort) and B) she is afriad that she is incapable of change. NEVER is it implied or stated that she doesn't love Booth.

If she had flat out accepted, it would have been highly OOC and would have seemed off to viewers. Booth may have finally realized he's ready for the next step, but he's been acknowledging for months to himself and to others that he is in love. Bones has not had time to readjust her mindset. Even Booth knew that, in all honesty, springing such a confession on her would probably end poorly (it was adressed in a previous episode), and yet he did it anyway and gave her little to no time to adjust to this new world view. I'm not saying that Booth did anything wrong either, he was obviously in a lot of pain both before the confession (with keeping such a huge secret from Bones) and after, but he didn't do it really right either… which fits the story very well.

In conclusion to this rant, cut Bones some slack. Loved the episode, loved the characters, loved what it means for the story arc (big picture people! they didn't sink the Booth/Brennan ship, they've finally changed the status quo! it's a good thing! It means progress!) and loved Zach being back. Kudos to 100 Bones!
