Screen Rant is excited to exclusively announce that novelist, composer and director of Bone Tomahawk, S. Craig Zahler, is writing a new graphic novel, Organisms From an Ancient Cosmos, to be released by Dark Horse Comics. The supernatural sci-fi thriller will arrive this Fall, and deals with the fallout of a seeming alien attack on Earth with the threat of more to come.

S. Craig Zahler is the director of several films, including Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete, for each of which he also composed the music. He has also written several novels. These include A Congregation of JackalsWraiths of the Broken Land, and The Slanted Gutter. Continuing this incredible versatility, Zahler has branched out into the medium of graphic novels.

This October, Dark Horse Comics will publish Organisms From an Ancient Cosmos in an oversized hardcover format. This will be Zahler's second graphic novel. His debut, Forbidden Surgeries of the Hideous Dr. Divinus, released in early 2021. Like his other works, this upcoming story will blend genres and hopefully delight audiences as it raises big questions. Check out the graphic novel's cover and synopsis below:

An alien spacecraft the size of a city materializes over the Pacific Ocean and the nations of the world jointly engage this enigmatic and incommunicative visitor with force. This battle results in large-scale destruction on both sides, but does not answer any of the questions that will haunt humanity: What are these utterly inhuman creatures? Where did they come from? Why did they choose to visit our planet? And... most importantly... are more forces on the way? For the bereaved billionaire Carlton Land, renowned biologist Aimee O'Donnell, and the brilliant, but blunt USAAF Chief Scientist Kenneth Yamazaki, these questions must be answered in order to safeguard the future of the human race.

This graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics presents numerous questions that thus far no one has the answers to. It presents classic science fiction problems, including aliens, and the aftermath of a fight with an enemy that remains a mystery. This work is distinctly different at first glance from Zahler's debut graphic novel, which was a noir horror in a black and white art style. Instead of dealing with murder and experimentation, this series will deal with the world's place in the universe among unknown foes it isn't prepared for. Though it could likely provide some interesting genre twists like Bone Tomahawk and Zahler's other works.

Organisms From an Ancient Cosmos promises to explore the human drama of its ambitious premise, starring a cast of experts in their fields who must grapple with the responsibility of preparing for an unprecedented and unexpected threat. S. Craig Zahler, says:

My first artistic interest was illustration, and after writing eight novels, recording nine albums, and directing three movies, it was a pleasure to draw once more. In this graphic novel, which is my second, I explore morally complex characters, intimate human drama, large-scale world building, and speculative science. I began working on the piece at the very beginning of lockdown and finished more than a year later when I received my first vaccine. Creating 'Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos' was an incredibly gratifying experience, and I'm thrilled to have it published by Dark Horse Comics, whose books I've read since the eighties.

This upcoming graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics adds to the publisher's broad library of science fiction comics and stories. If it proves to be as ambitious as his previous projects across various media, this could very well be a must-read story for any lover of sci-fi. Fans of S. Craig Zahler's work, including Bone Tomahawk, will get the chance to experience Organisms From an Ancient Cosmos when it releases October 18.
