Leaked packaging from an upcoming Star Wars LEGO set tease Boba Fett's escape from the Sarlaac pit. The fan-favorite bounty hunter suffered one of the most unceremonious deaths in cinematic history in Return of the Jedi, when he was accidentally bumped into by a visually-impaired Han Solo and went tumbling into the monster's belly. George Lucas later said if he knew just how popular Boba Fett was, he would have come up with a different fate for the character. As it were, the last we see of the Mandalorian is him becoming a meal - destined to endure through the Sarlaac's slow digestive process.

But since it takes the Sarlaac 1,000 years to go through with that, it means Boba Fett did not die as soon as he was eaten. Ever since Return of the Jedi premiered in 1983, viewers have wanted to see if the bounty hunter managed to escape and resume his life's work in the galaxy. That's a question gone unanswered in Lucasfilm's new canon thus far, but a new piece of merchandise may contain some clues about what's in store.

Reddit user uncovered images of two new Star Wars buildable figure sets that will be available in 2018: Darth Vader and Boba Fett. In the case of the latter, the box depicts Boba firing his blaster at the Sarlaac's tentacles, indicating that he was able to break free following his skirmish against Luke Skywalker and friends. Boba Fett looks menacingly at the viewer

It's important to keep in mind that this is hardly confirmation Boba Fett lived through the events of Return of the Jedi and could simply be a piece of artistic license on the part of LEGO to give the product some eye-catching artwork. As beloved as Boba is, he didn't partake in much action during the original trilogy, so the toy manufacturer was probably left to their own devices in order to design a cool-looking pose for the latest addition to their line. The set itself will just be a Boba Fett figure; the Sarlaac and Tatooine are simply graphics to give the packaging some panache and showcase Boba's features, like his jetpack and gun. Due to the infamous nature of his onscreen death, Boba and the Sarlaac are forever intertwined, so this is iconography familiar to both die-hard fans and casual moviegoers.

Of course, Lucasfilm could be planting the seeds for something else down the road. One of the many spinoff films they're said to be developing revolves around Boba Fett and other bounty hunters, and many would prefer to see that project take place in a post-Return of the Jedi world. Both Rogue One and Solo are prequels, and while going back in the past can have its benefits, looking ahead to the future isn't quite as limiting creatively and gives the studio some leeway when crafting a story. Should a Boba Fett movie come to be, opening it with his daring escape from the Sarlaac would be a great way of commanding the audiences' attention and setting the tone.
