HBO has long been viewed as a reliable source for quality storytelling on television. Thanks to hit comedies like Sex and the City and The Larry Sanders Show as well as award-winning dramas like The Sopranos and Deadwood, the network has developed a reputation for providing a home to television series that are too graphic or edgy for traditional networks.

In the last couple of years, for example, HBO has introduced a number of high-profile shows on its current schedule, including Game of Thrones, The Newsroom (also recently renewed for another season) and Veep. All three have received critical acclaim and numerous honors, and while the network has recently begun lining up its next round of new programs (including Damon Lindelof’s post-Rapture drama The Leftovers), it has just announced that yet another one of its hit shows will be returning for another round.

HBO has officially renewed Boardwalk Empire for season 5. The news follows soon after the show’sfourth season premiere and its five Emmy wins, including a Best Supporting Actor statuette for star Bobby Cannavale. Despite a slight decline in ratings, Boardwalk Empire performs well for HBO, earning about 7.5 million viewers, including original broadcasts, encore airings, digital recordings and streaming videos over the HBO GO service.

Boardwalk Empire‘s renewal isn’t that surprising, considering the widespread acclaim and solid viewership the Steve Buscemi led series has received since its 2010 premiere. With True Blood currently in its final season and several unproven pilots on the way, it’s easy to see why HBO might be reluctant to truncate any of its current hit shows at the moment.

Set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, Boardwalk Empire follows corrupt political figure Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Buscemi) and has essentially filled the crime drama void left in HBO’s schedule following the 2007 conclusion of The Sopranos. The series’ distinctive visual style, promising setup and strong ensemble cast (which also includes Man of Steel‘s Michael Shannon) could provide several more seasons of intriguing drama. Collectively, the show – which began with a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese – has received 17 Emmy Awards and 40 nominations, including two for Best Drama Series.

  1. “Has received Emmy awards, two for best drama series.”

According to my knowledge, Boardwalk has been nominated two times, not winning two times, as that quote implies.

    • ‘Received Emmy awards’. They didn’t say WHAT it received, only that it received Emmmy awards. It could have meant received nominations, NOT wins.

  2. Congrats boardwalk, you are my favorite show!!!

  3. It is funny with ‘Boardwalk Empire’. Watch it every season. Enjoy it. Admire the skill and craft and technique on show from all involved in front and behind the camera. Yet the moment it finishes, it utterly disappears from my brain with no desire to return to it.

I think it is this. It is all very self contained. There are no hidden secrets to discover once you’ve gone through it all first time around. I would liken it to a classic novel you read once, put on the shelf and maybe come back to in 5/10 years time.

Still, enjoying season 4, will enjoy season 5.

    • Well put. This isn’t a show I re-watch again later in the week. Enjoyable, but once it’s over, it’s over.

      • Check out the book. It’s actually the history from when a crappy piece of land was turned into a resort and through wheeling and dealing became a big vacation destination just prior to prohibition. The majority of the series steps far away from the book because although Nucky was a big deal… There were plenty others all the way up Trump…A lot of interesting stories, but I doubt they’ll go beyond the 30′s

  4. one of the best shows ever…so glad 4 the news….

  5. This is good news indeed, especially with the finale of Breaking Bad last night it’s reassuring to know there will still be another high calibre show to watch.

  6. Happy, I really enjoy this show. Its def one of my favorite tv shows.

It has the characters and they can keep this going for a few more seasons. With True Blood done after another season HBO needs to keep its big shows going. They have Newsroom, GOT and Boardwalk and this new True Detectives show looks good.

  7. Love this show, can’t wait for the new guys to step into the limelight. Al will sooner or later be a major problem for anyone and everyone.

  8. i wonder how will season 4 will end.

    • It will end with a bang and a whimper…………….a death and a tragedy and many conflicts to be resolved……………

  9. This is a fantastic series with beautiful blues and Jazz music which I remeber my Dad singing when I was a kid. Given the ages of the characters in the plot this series can run and run and run. Al Capone did not die until years after this was set, Lucky Luciano was alive till recently, Mayer Lanskey and J Edgar Hoover, complicit in the the Murder of President Kennedy were part of our contemporary life. This series could span 6 more decades…………………….The wardrobe is great, the mise on scene, etc are a credit to USA film making……………The Golden age of cinema on TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • “Beautiful Blues and Jazz Music” …I so agree …but will they bring back Margot Bingham (Daughter Maitland)? I have not heard in any of the previews. What a singer and what a mature actress at 21 years old.

  10. One of the best series ever. It has so many twist and turns. Brings back the mobsters and early days of crime and corruption. Was very glad to see another season coming. I have been a fan of these type series and movies since I was a child.
