‘Boardwalk Empire’ Casts Bugsy Siegel for Season 2

Published 4 years ago by , Updated August 13th, 2013 at 11:17 pm,

Practically a shoe-in for a second season after the Martin Scorsese-directed pilot aired on HBO last year, Boardwalk Empire is announcing the casting of more famous gangsters set to appear in the series as filming on season two nears.

One tantalizing bit of casting news is the announcement that the role of Benjamin ‘Bugsy’ Siegel has gone to Rescue Me actor, Michael Zegen.

As made apparent by the above picture, Zegen will clearly portray a much younger and less experienced Siegel than the one Warren Beatty portrayed in the 1991 Barry Levinson film Bugsy. In fact, age is the reason Zegen’s ‘Bugsy’ will go by the more familiar version of Siegel’s first name, ‘Benny,’ instead of the moniker that would eventually make him infamous – as that nickname wasn’t adopted until the late 1930s.

This younger take on the ‘Bugsy’ character, described as a “tough, smart urban kid,” sounds like it will bring even more fuel to the slow burn that is Boardwalk Empire.

Watching someone develop into the person (good or bad) you know they are going to become is a staple of both powerful drama and underwhelming prequels. Clearly, this is intended to be the former. Adding some spice to the fictionalized early days of ‘Bugsy’ Siegel is the likelihood of seeing him cross paths with other gangsters that currently populate the world of Boardwalk Empire. Let us not forget that along with the semi-fictional Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), Zegen will be joining the likes of Al Capone (Stephen Graham) and Charles ‘Lucky’ Luciano (Vincent Piazza), who play key parts in the criminal world of the show. Watching a burgeoning ‘Bugsy’ meet up with an unrefined Al Capone or ‘Lucky’ Luciano could be a real treat.

Thus far, HBO has done a tremendous job with the program, and while Zegen’s casting is one I’m sure very few saw coming, the success of Boardwalk Empire should leave many confident that there are some interesting plans ahead for the young crime king. Certainly the show has revealed a knack for putting character before star power, and HBO’s version of ‘Bugsy’ will greatly impact the goings on in the underground world of Boardwalk Empire.

What do you think? Are there enough gangsters in Boardwalk Empire already, or will the addition of a young ‘Bugsy’ Siegel entice you to watch?

Boardwalk Empire will begin its second season in the fall of 2011 on HBO.

  1. I can’t wait for season two. This was the best show on tv last season IMO.

    • Loved Boardwalk Empire! We Just Need More Of It! Of course,it goes without saying the character Jimmy stole the series! I want more of Jimmy! xoxo

  2. Hnads down best show of 2010. I got HBO just for this. Steve bushemi has allways been a very very underated actor. glad to c he is finally getting the praise he deserves.

  3. hope the new season has more Jimmy! More Jimmy, please!

    • I totally agree, more Jimmy!!!

  4. What is the season premire date?

  5. Can someone please tell us when the 2nd season begins? Great show………great actors.

  6. I hope that Nuc lives through all 12 episodes. This season has me sick with anticipation. An please let that cowardly sheriff turn coat Thompson either grow a spin or catch a slug where his use to be

    • He lived until the 60′s so I think he’ll be in the whole series.

Mr Harrow “The Tin Woodsman” has become my 2nd favorite next to Nucky then Jimmy.

I never watched until the repeats Love the show. I am Sick of all the NCIS, CSI, Law and Order shows. At least the cops portrayed in this show are all corrupt just like in real life.

      • Well Lori I guess you live in a different world. All of the cops are not bad and all of the bad guys are not good. If you had been around when the gangsters were running the world you would have worshiped them. I enjoy this series as well as NCIS, Law & Order etc., because they are entertaining, not because they are ” true to life” to say you are naive would be kind, stupid would be acurate.

  7. someone really likes jimmies

  8. Can HARDLY wait for Season 2!!!!!!! It’s going to be a LONG summer waiting………adding another “gangster” will just add to the show as I’m sure “someone” is going to be killed off (sooner or later), so it will just add to the suspense as to who it’s gonna be. Keep up the GREAT work, Boardwalk Empire (and please hurry with the new shows!!)

    • Wait, whaaat?? The second season starts in the fall??I was hoping theyre gonna release it in spring…its too good to be broadcasted only 12 weeks a year… :( Oh,God,THE SUSPENSE!

  9. I would only hope the writers can write in how the mob and polictics crossed with other known criminals and large corporations this show has me at the edge of my seat. Waiting for the next episode…. please hurry up with the 2nd season, let me know when, so I can set my DVR not to miss any show.

  10. Fantistic show. Steve Bushemi is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always enjoyed watching him in his previous character actors. My husband really enjoys watching him act. Can’t wait until next season.

  11. Show was amazing I keep replaying the on demand ones can’t wait for season 2 jimmy don’t murder nucky don’t do it

  12. I loved BoardWalk Empire and I can’t wait for season two, I feel like a kid just anxiously jumping up and down with excitement on the second season.

Keep up the awesome work and Long Live Nucky and I too love Jimmy, but I like the unsung character that had the plastic face and was a WWI one vet. I hope to see more of him too.

  13. I dont care who they add to the cast – just get Season 2 on ASAP! Waiting until the fall for it to start is going to kill me!

  14. Very good show.
    Best regards from Serbia

  15. can you tell me when season 2 will starts

  16. It will be intersting to see how knucki’s brother and Dabney Colemans great charactor conspire to get Jimmy in Knucki’s seat as the treasurer of Atlantic City. More Dabney, more Jimmy and I would like to see more charactor development in the Margaret role. The cast is uniformly excellent and in my opinion this is one of the best shows HBO has aired to date. For me, only The Sopranos is better however, they have the advantage of having 9 seasons under their belt. Terrance Winter, Tim Van Patton, and the great cast and exec producers including Mark Whalberg and a certain Martin Scorcese make this show unbeatable. They already have a Grammy after season one. I figure the painter and his wife are gone, Richard the marksman behind the mask is a potentially great charactor and is Jimmy’s right hand hit man so he will be back I figure.

This show is almost too good for TV. No, it is too good for tv but that’s great considering TV is becoming a dying media. HBO just might help save it. RK

    • HBO is not tv its HBO!

  17. Boardwalk Empire just shows what quality television can be when allowed to function to it’s full potential. When I’m not watching the actors and being wowed by the quality of their work, I’m sitting stunned by the incredible sets, costumes and “color”. Way to go HBO!!

  18. when it comes to gangsters, you can’t forget meyer lansky or arnold rothstein. i LOVE how they mix fact with fiction in the. the use of time period correct “things”. i.e. that horrid mask Richard has to wear.

yeah, we need more Jimmy. his character gets better every week. gonna go back and watch all of the old episodes again.

  19. Yes more Jimmy and definitely more hunky Nelson

    • when is the second season coming ? it will never be close to sopranos

  20. Great show, hopefully in time, it can become as good as sopranos…. Well have to see.
Al Capone is the best for me need to see more!!
The actor who plays him is from Liverpool. 

  21. Have just watched Boardwalk Empire on sky and await the finale of Season 1 with bated breath.
Fabulous TV and have loved every second. Steve Buscemi is one of my favourite actors and is perfect as ‘Nucky’ but the FBI agent Nelson Van Alden is so cringeworhty he’s brilliant.
Cant wait for season 2 so please, hurry up and get filming!!!!

  22. My husband I both like to watch season one. Can not wait to see what season two holds for us.. Absolutely love this series.

  23. Love the first show! Said it few weeks ago they should ad some new young gangsters! Love the Bugsy Siegel idea … looking forward to some guys like Frank Costello and Vito Genovese! Air the 2nd season already … gonna be awesome!

  24. I hope the season two of Boardwalk empire will be starting their second season…if anyone here could let me know i would be greatly appreciated

    many thanks

  25. I really wish we didn’t have to wait so long for Season 2:(. Love this show!

  26. The only problem I have was the guy cast as Lucky Luciano. He doesn’t look like Lucky at all. One of the thugs that was robbing Nucky Johnson looked more like him than Vincent Piazza. (I can’t remember his name but he was the tall lanky guy that signed the insurance policy.) Sometimes you have to go with the looks instead of the chick magnet. The real Nucky Johnson looks like a train wreck, though. Still, its a great show!

  27. Love the show, its great, I wish the 2nd season was starting now and not in the fall, its too long await. Great job on the show.
