While it’s not the near-instantaneous renewal that Boardwalk Empire received after the Martin Scorsese-directed pilot premiered last year, it’s unlikely anyone is complaining. At three episodes into its second season, HBO’s pricey prohibition-era drama has snagged an early order for a third season.

Considering the show is the most prestigious drama on the HBO schedule, the news that Boardwalk Empire would march into season 3 was expected – especially after the series took home 8 Emmys, including best directing for a drama series for Scorsese. Still, with ratings somewhat down in comparison to last season, the early renewal speaks volumes about the network’s feelings toward the program.

HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo said of the series: “Following a triumphant first season, I was eager to see what Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their stellar team had in store, and they continue to surpass our highest expectations. The response from the media and our viewers has been extremely gratifying.”

So far this season, Boardwalk has garnered a respectable (for HBO) audience, with the most recent episode “A Dangerous Maid” earning 2.9 million viewers. Those numbers grow exponentially to an impressive 10.7 million viewers, when additional airings and DVR or On Demand viewings are taken into consideration.

Although the beginning of Boardwalk’s second season lacked the pomp and circumstance of the program’s debut, storyline-wise, the program has enjoyed a great start. As opposed to the lengthy getting-to-know-you phase of last season – that some may have thought moved at too deliberate a pace – season 2 has, comparatively speaking, maintained a fairly brisk tempo by pitting Nucky Thompson against those he considered his closest allies.

Michael Shannon continues to be a major draw for 'Boardwalk Empire'

Highlights thus far would have to be the impressive sway Chalky White (Michael Kenneth Williams) reveals to hold over his constituents – despite being jailed, and the softening of morally embattled Agent Nelson Van Alden, who, through the subtle and layered performance of Michael Shannon, switches from a man seemingly beset by his convictions to one of a tender, yet duplicitous, provider for both the women in his life. Of course, the scarred visage of Jack Huston’s Richard Harrow continues to make him the most sympathetic killer on television.

The most pleasant surprise, however, would have to go to Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald), who, after being a bit reluctant to accept Nucky’s criminal side, has proven herself devoted to the man – underhanded dealings and all.

With nine episodes still remaining, it’s still too early to make any firm declarations – but, it’s easy to imagine that accolades will fall on Boardwalk Empire again, come award season.

In addition to renewing its impressive core-titles like Boardwalk Empire, True Blood and Game of Thrones, HBO has also given another season to the critically acclaimed, but under appreciated Treme, and picked up a slew of new programs like the Julia Louis-Dreyfus political comedy Veep, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s entertainment industry spoof Life’s Too Short, and, possibly most exciting, the Michael Mann, David Milch horse racing drama Luck.

Boardwalk Empire airs Sunday nights @10pm on HBO.

  1. Good (I think)

Been rather bland until the last episode. The mocking devout christian thing with Genral Zod has been abit over the top and mean spirited as well this season. I would hope the writers are better than that but maybe not.

  2. I love Boardwalk empire I don’t think it’s dipped in quality for even one episode. It’s very smart and the acting is spot on. Not one moment of Bland IMO

  3. Dear Mr. Harrow: Love you, tin mask and all. :-)

  4. when will boardwalk emprire season # 3 will star thank you

  5. I’m from Kazakhstan, and i really loved to watch 1-st and 2-nd season of Boardwalk Empire. After this show i planed to visit Atlantic city on summertime 2011, but unfortunately it did not happen. Still hope to see AC someday.
Does anyone know when the 3-rd season starts ?

    • Atlantic City is HORRIBLE, you wouldn’t want to visit there, go to Las Vegas it will be a MUCH BETTER TIME. it used to be good in the days of this show, but it has lost it’s glamour today.

      • Don’t go to either Atlantic City or Las Vegas. If you want to get the feel of what AC was like back then, visit Ocean City, NJ instead! Signed – a long-time frequenter of the Jersey shore.

  6. One of the best shows on TV anywhere!!! when is season 3 going to air? “these woods is for fishin, these woods is for hunting, these woods is for living………” I just love that line. Jimmy goes back to Princeton, so THEN WHAT?? C’mon man can’t just leave us hangin like that after his girl got blown away with the baby and her lover.

  7. MORE CAPONE Please!!! Less Nucky, gettin tired of his face!! :)

    • Nucky is one of the best characters on the show, less of Gyp will be more appropriate.

  8. Boardwalk Empire is the best drama, by far, than any other show on TV. The story lines are intriguing and the acting is beyond superb. I am thrilled that it has been renewed for a third season. Television needs more shows like it.

  9. loved it! Ready for Season 3

  10. I love this show. My one complaint is that the season doesn’t last long enough. It seems like it just started… and now its over. That’s WHACK. So… I have to wait until October 2012 for Season 3? Its kind of discouraging and makes people lose interest.

  11. Just saw the season 2 finale… I was good, but it seemed the writers were in a hurry to wrap things up… Too many trascendental events happened in just one episode…

  12. I’m bummed that season 2 wrapped already.

  13. One of the finest productions ever on television! Right up there with The Wire and Deadwood.

  14. Gutted season 2 has finished. Shocked that they have killed jimmy off though

  15. Please Dear Mr Scorsese,
Release Season 3 asap!!! “Dying” to seeing it!!!!
    Your Fan from Germany,

  16. I wish the series had continued i thought there was another episode to come, still one of the best shows on the box can’t wait for season three to start anyone know when that will be.

  17. I’m Guessing Nucky and Jimmy’s mother are going to be running everything now! For sure arnold and crew will be right there!

  18. Damn it!!!!
I cant believe they whacked Jimmy, thats a pisser

  19. with jimmy darmody death, i dont expect much from season 3. he was the best character in the serie

    • Love the show, but can’t imagine being satisfied watching without seeing Jimmy. Can’t believe they bumped him off — amazing actor.

  20. Darmadys son will kill nucky

  21. Yeah – whacking Jimmy was a bit surprising, but then again – so was whacking big pu$$y on the Sopranos and that didn’t hurt the series one bit.

To me, Jimmy’s demise indicates a new (but planned) direction for the show. The fan reaction to Jimmy’s death only shows how well his character was developed and how strong the series is and (expectadly) will be.

Can’t wait for season 3. I just hope as Capone’s influence becomes stronger, it doesn’t end up dominating the storyline. The interesting thing about Boardwalk Empire has been the development of all the subplots and characters we never knew existed (whether real or created).

We all know Capone’s/Luciano’s legacy. I hope they continue introducing new, never before heard from characters. That will keep it fresh for years to come.

  22. I loved both seasons. That being said, I think it is a mistake to do season 3. To me, although the obvious focus is on Nucky, the show I is/wa rally about jimmy, his quick rise to power in a carrier time, the dichotomy of jimmy being the best/most moral person of all the characters, contrasted with his willingness to get ahead through unscrupulous means, jimmys struggle with coming back from the war and his mental demons, etc. I thought got the e show was over at the conclusion of ladstseason, and wa shocked to hear the other day that a new season is forthcoming. All hail the almighty dollar, I guess. I just hope steve b. Gets his fair share.

  23. Omg love this show but, don’t understand why they killed off jimmy don’t get it. Can wait till it starts again the series is a by the water conversation at work.

  24. When are they going to announce the exact date of the season 3 premiere (so I can start planning my trip to Caesar’s in Atlantic City)?!?!?!

  25. Love the Show however the story line of season two was bland and very obvious I am not surprised the ratings dipped. I would hope Scorsese finds a more clever way to conceal the plot as it unravels there was a lack of twists and turns in season two. Great acting and unlike some, I appreciate the wardrobe of the cast I am hoping season 3 is a winner!
