Blown Away by Teaser Trailer for ‘The Last Airbender’

We finally get our first peek at M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘The Last Airbender!’

The Last Airbender Poster Header

We’ve got the teaser trailer for M. Night Shayamalan’s The Last Airbender and let me tell you: it is much cooler than I ever would’ve imagined! It opens with a badass kung-fu feel and closes with a promise of epic, action-packed adventure.

And unless they had one hell of editor cutting this trailer,  I dare say The Last Airbender is looking like the film that might finally redeem M. Night Shayamalan!

Based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender, Shayamalan’s film will also tell the story of a war-torn world divided into four nations, based on the four elements of Fire, Water, Earth and Air. From this world emerges a young boy named Aang (Noah Ringer), The Last Airbender, able to manipulate all four elements of Fire, Water, Earth and Air, who is prophesied to defeat the imperial Fire Nation and bring peace to the world.

I just love the arch of this trailer: the quiet, cool, kung-fu opening building to the epic war sequence with fire balls coating the sky. Awesome. And did I mention that the “airbending” effects looked pretty good? An effective way to employ CGI.

Most surprising for me was the total lack of “Shaymalanisms” in this trailer. With just about every one of M. Night’s prior movies I saw ten seconds of a trailer and could immediately tell it was him sitting in the director’s chair. If I didn’t already know he was doing The Last Airbender, I wouldn’t have guessed it. Apparently adapting somebody ELSE’S work for the screen seems to agree with Mr. Night. Good to see him branching out of his own head.

Suddenly The Last Airbender is on my list of most anticipated films of next year. Who knew? It’s currently slated for a July 2, 2010 release. Tell us what you thought of the teaser trailer.

  1. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first. I am a huge fan of the show and I hope they stay true to the canon. I dont mind when a few liberties are taken here and there, but it should still keep to the story. This trailer does look awesome and I am going to be keeping my eye open for anything else that pops up. Great trailer.

  2. I’m not really a fan of the show, only catching a few episodes. But that trailer has got me psyched! I cannot wait for this film to open. I think it will be a huge hit.

    M. Night started out real strong with his first three films, I loved SIgns, but then kind of slowly went downhill with each consecutive release. This film looks like he’s back on the fast track to being one of the most talented modern directors. I can’t wait.

    • @Ludo – your predicting sucks. ;)

      • Steve,

Oh, NICE job Monday morning quarterbacking. The trailer for this DID look good. Yes, the movie turned out to be crap. Easy for you to come in and be high and mighty a year later after having seen the movie.

  3. I thought translating the bending from cartoon to live-action was going to be the most difficult part of the film. But from this teaser it looks like these guys have it down. So Aang looks good, where are the other characters? I guess it’s just a ‘teaser’ after all. I can’t wait for a full trailer, or the whole movie. Can I wait an entire year?

  4. I like M. Night’s stuff and wouldn’t have expected him to take on a kids cartoon. But it looks like he’s going to a super job with Last Airbender.
I’m a fan of the cartoon, but only seen about half of it though, and what pulled me in is the original story it tells. I hope M. Night stays true to the story, even if he has to jam it into one movie it could still be great.

  5. Not digging it so far.
Aang’s clothes look so….drab. No vibrant colors, including his arrow.
Also, I’m growing very concerned that the movie will be totally serious. Avatar, despite dealing with serious issues, still has a rich and fantastic comedic tone to it.
I really hope they don’t lose that in the movie.

  6. Three movies are going to be made, one for each book of the cartoon. Thank goodness. I think one of the best parts of the cartoon was that each character had a back story, and had time to develop. It would be a bummer if that didn’t happen in the movie, especially with all the different changes they go through.

  7. I think the best part of Shammhammer directing this is that his daughter is a huge avatar fan, so he wouldn’t dare to mess things up :)

  8. Hmm, I’m not horribly excited yet. The teaser was good, but we didn’t see a whole lot. I’m going to wait until a full trailer before I decide if I’m going to see it or not.

  9. OMG!!!!!! I really didn’t believe he could do it. With this trailer M. Night Shamalan surprised me. The flow and voice over were just perfectly on point. You felt like another episode was about to start. Can’t wait.

  10. Did anyone notice the voice in the trailer is Uncle Iroh’s? Well, at least the guy’s who replaced the late Mako in the third season.

  11. M. Night Shayamalan may turn it all around with this one

  12. This looks like what Dragonball Evolution SHOULD have been :)

  13. Too bad they couldn’t get half the casting right.

  14. Where’s Apa?

  15. @Hero Supreme

It was a TEASER trailer. And a very good one.

The firelord’s vessels looked spot on. Can’t wait.

  16. Yeah, this looks WAY better than dragonball, dragonball is not even on the radar with this one!
I’s still a teaser, but I’m excited for more!

  17. ehh….. i dont think he can pull this off. as much as i like the animated series…

  18. @Ross Miller
While watching the child do his kata?, I was thinking the same thing, this looks like what Dragonball should have been.

This teaser does look epic, but I’m still not convinced that M. Night Shaggydoo has redeemed himself. I’ve never watched the cartoon (in fact, I’ve never heard of it until Screen Rant posted about it) so I don’t know the back stories. It’s on my list for next year but M. Night Shakeitallnight needs more than 1 hit to transcend the abyss he has created for himself.

  19. A teaser trailer usually doesn´t say much, no exception here. A little too early to say that M. Night has got his groove back in my opinion. Actually couldn´t quite tell if everything was cgi or not… including the stickslinger. I´ve never seen the cartoon, and I´m not really interested in catching up, so I´ll wait for a full trailer. M. Night is however an amazing director, he just hasn´t had the best scripts lately (since Signs).

  20. This trailer gives the movie some promise of being epic, I watch the show whenever it’s on and I know the characters well, the people casted wouldn’t be my first choices but I’ll give it a chance. I wonder if Appa will be in it, well he has to be, Momo too, I’m just wondering how they will look.

  21. the kid kinda looks faggy

  22. i loved the show growing up… and this trailer just looks AWESOME! i just hope they get all of the characters right, because some of the casting choices have had me guessing already. we’ll have to wait and see i guess.

  23. while I respect the enthusiasm of the reviewer for this teaser, one has to remember this is only a teaser. It offers very little in regards to how this movie will eventually look. It may be the coolest thing since ice cream, but until I see something more I have to withhold any sort of excitement.

anyone remember the Godzilla teaser that came out (yes, the Godzilla with Matthew Broderick). That thing looked frickin fantastic till I paid to actually see it. Since I’m not an Airbender fan anyway, I will need something from this film to convince me to see it.

  24. I think M. Night is a beast the Happening was very good, The lady in the water was ok,the village was good,Signs is my favorite horrer movie, and unbreakable was good.i never seen the six scence(i dont no how thats possible) So how does he turn it around when he is doing just fine

  25. it looks alright but the guy needs to stick to his horror/fantasy(or sc-fi)

  26. Too soon to call, but I don’t see anything here that immediately turns me off. Since I know nothing about the original cartoon, that’s probably a good sign.

  27. Shayamalan, I’ve stuck by you. I’ve enjoyed all your films. But you’ve got to stop putting your name in the title.

You are not a good enough director to put “a film by M. Night Shayamalan” at the beginning of every thing you do.

  28. When your daughter is gonna be watching and judging, you know the pressure is on.

  29. I found the voice over very uninspiring when coupled with the sparring of the title character..wow he blew out candles!! This kid is gonna kick some seriour butt!!The music was the only thing about this that peaked any interest from me..
