Bloodsport Remake Phillip Noyce Phillip Noyce Will Direct Bloodsport Remake

By now, with an ever-growing horde of remakes and reimaginings en route, it should come as no surprise that no beloved, or even cult, 80s property is safe from remake fever. While some films, such as Stallone’s Expendables, have capitalized on the nostalgia-fueled trend without having to directly remake a beloved film – many other 80s projects have not been so lucky.

Today, another iconic action-flick is on the precipice of a modern Hollywood make-over, Newt Arnold’s Bloodsport starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Famous film producer Ed Pressman (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) is in Cannes shopping around a batch of new projects – which include the Bloodsport remake (in addition to the Crow remake).

According to Screen Daily, the remake project has attracted the attention (and subsequently director talents) of Phillip Noyce (Salt). Noyce would helm a film based on a script by Taken-writer, Robert Mark Kamen.

For anyone who grew-up after the 80s, the original Bloodsport followed the (potentially embellished) story of real-life martial artist Frank Dux (Van Damme) who travels to Hong Kong to fight in the Kumite – an underground, no-holds-barred, martial arts tournament – where Dux, reportedly, fought opponent after opponent until he was crowned the contest’s first Western-born champion.

In the updated version, Dux (presumably) gets a modern backstory as “an American who goes to Brazil to recover from the violence he has experienced in Afghanistan [and] gets involved in a martial arts contest.”

While there’s no word on who Noyce and Pressman hope to cast in the lead role, it’ll be interesting to see how the modern-update, coupled with the now rampant reports of Frank Dux’ exaggerations, might alter the “based on a true story” angle of the original.

It’s certainly possible that the reboot may simply follow, as mentioned, an American (not necessarily named Dux) who fights in the now Brazilian tournament to forget the troubles of his past – instead of chronicling the series of Dux’ adventure in the Kumite. Meaning, the remake could be a fictional story based on a semi-fictional interpretation of a real man’s (potentially) fictional story.

No word yet on when we can expect to see the Bloodsport remake battle it out at the box office.

  4. Bren is the Golden pick! you can’t make bloodsport without Bren Foster

  5. rolled with Bren at Hollywood BJJ== f@#KING quick!

  6. I don’t think there should be a remake of Bloodsport…..the movie is nothing without Van Damme. It will be a flop…..the original bloodsport is the real deal…..Without Van Damme we wouldn’t have known about the movie.

  7. Dude Bren Foster is sick! Totally agree http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1248409/

  8. According to my contract and settlement agreement for their previous breach of contract (the source of controversy) any remake cannot digress from the original. What is this potentially embellished story garbage are you a journalist or another troll? If people are interested in the facts surrounding me they refer to a variety of unbiased and objective sources who stand to gain something by attempting to take cowardly swipes at my character. Visit worldwide Dojo.com or my own hub for correct and substantive information, which this column apparently lacks

  9. Only one person could possibly pull of this remake, Scott Adtkins. He’s got the look and the skills. for the villian or main oppenent is pretty much easy…any ole giant Brizilain would prolly do just fine I guess, hhaha.
