Warning! Spoilers Ahead for Black Widow #7!

Marvel's elite superspy the Black Widow has apparently settled on a name for her new superhero team, and it might be one of the silliest names yet. Not only that but their new name also brings to mind another bad superhero name that was nearly given to Miles Morales as well.

Black Widow #7 by Kelly Thompson and Elena Casagrande is the start of a new storyline in the current Black Widow comic. In the comic Natasha Romanov and her partner Yelena Belova aka the White Widow begin investigating the mysterious villain Apogee and his San Francisco-based organization known as the Olio. This is because Apogee was previously responsible for experimenting on a woman named Lucy and giving her electricity-based superpowers. To aid in their mission Natasha also recruits Anya Corazon, better known as Spider-Girl, and has her go undercover as a member of the Olio to spy on them. With no less than three spider-themed superheroines working together Anya reminds Natasha of a superhero team she once thought up in the past-the Spy-Der Ladies. Natasha doesn't respond positively to the name, but the final page of Black Widow #7 makes reference to the name again, hinting that she may embrace calling herself the Spy-Der Ladies in the next issue.

The Spy-Der Ladies isn't just a cringe-worthy pun, it's also reminiscent of another superhero name from Marvel history. Previously Marvel had considered having Miles Morales change his name to Spy-D, which would have been an awful branding decision for the young hero. Of course, the name change from Spider-Man to Spy-D was only suggested at Marvel and thankfully never happened, whereas Anya's line about the Spy-Der Ladies was presented as a joke she told Black Widow in the past. As such the similarities between Spy-D and the Spy-Der Ladies are likely just an unfortunate coincidence.

Marvel Comics is no stranger to coming up with bad names for Superheroes but Spider-Girl's suggestion of Spy-Der Ladies is an intentionally silly name that she came up with as a joke. And Natasha clearly wasn't thrilled by the name suggestion either so it's doubtful she'd ever stick with such a silly team name either. And White Widow is even more serious than Natasha is so she would probably object to the name too. But based on the teaser at the end of the issue, it looks like the name Spy-Der Ladies will be sticking around for at least one more issue.

Black Widow's current character arc has been all about her moving past the tragedies of her past by moving to San Francisco and starting over. To this end she and Yelena took Lucy into their home and agreed to help her as a hero. Black Widow's future is uncertain right now, but her starting a new life as a member of the Spy-Der Ladies could help her start over.
