Thor is finally about to debut to North America in just a few days and it’s not long after when Captain America: The First Avenger follows suit. These two films provide lead-ins to the ultimate comic book movie event, The Avengers, which has already begun production.
We’ve known about these films and their casts for quite some time, but what happens next? Outside of an official release date for Iron Man 3 and the hope that Ant-Man will someday come to fruition, we don’t yet know the official film slate for Marvel Studios going forward.
After the success of Iron Man back in 2008, it didn’t take long for Marvel to realize the potential of their intellectual property in Hollywood and they quickly announced and pushed into development a sequel, solo films for Thor and Captain America and then, the ultimate team-up superhero film, The Avengers.
Since then, outside of wishful talk from cast members, Marvel President Kevin Feige and Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, we’ve seen nothing official on future feature film projects and what characters may hit the silver screen. We’ve long known about the studio’s interest in expanding their franchise to explore more of their B-list characters, like Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, and we’ve heard the reports of someof those films having scripts in development, but still, no release dates.
The reason for this is two-fold: first, to focus fans’ attention on the current line-up so they can establish The Avengers brand, and second, to gauge the success for what films, which universes and which characters work for audiences. Cap takes us to WWII, Thor to the cosmic Marvel Universe, Iron Man and the SHIELD agents of all the films, ground us in modern reality.
With two of the SHIELD agents, Hawkeye and Black Widow, becoming key parts of Iron Man 2, Thor and both partaking in The Avengers, it’s no wonder there’s potential for each to earn an increased role in the franchise. Both are played by popular actors, and we reported on the interest last year of Black Widow solo film. Renner on the other hand is one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors and certainly could warrant his own action pic as Marvel’s greatest archer.
The Playlist chatted with Kevin Feige who revealed that “towards the end of the summer” we’d find out more on their upcoming films. That likely means that during their Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con, they’ll make some major surprise announcements, assuming they can maintain secrecy until then.
“There’s no definitive plans, but we have started talking and talking with Scarlett about what a Widow movie could be. Internally we’ve also started thinking what a ‘Hawkeye’ movie could be, how we could continue to explore the organization [which Samuel Jackson‘s Nick Fury leads] S.H.I.E.L.D, which has a pretty big part in ‘Thor,’ smaller parts in the two ‘Iron Man’ films and has a giant part in ‘The Avengers.’ [So it’s like], what would a stand-alone “S.H.I.E.L.D.” be like? It all goes back to the comics. Sometimes the answer is—when looking at a certain run of issues— ‘no way’ and sometimes the answer is ‘maybe, let’s continue to explore it’ and certainly with Hawkeye and Black Widow those are two that we’re exploring.”
A year ago, Samuel L. Jackson apoke about starring in a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie after The Avengers and that may be a be a better path for Marvel to take, one that allows them to make use of Sam L, along with ScarJo and Renner all together for a more bankable film.
“The Avengers should start shooting some time next year, and then some time after that there’ll be a big S.H.I.E.L.D. movie.”
I’d much rather see a SHIELD movie instead of a Black Widow solo affair, and for Marvel to move on with Dr. Strange, Black Panther and a Heroes for Hire film with Luke Cage and Iron Fist, let alone the Ant-Man movie from Edgar Wright if that’s still happening.
Kevin Feige already made it clear that Marvel is planning movies five years out at all times, so they know what they want, they just need to decide which comes first. The plan was to have two films per year with the hope of expanding to four a year, but with Runaways getting canned and the writer moving over to Iron Man 3, The Avengers is seemingly all by itself in 2012 and as it stands, Iron Man 3 lonely in 2013. Expect another film to be announced for 2013, and sequels to Captain America and Thor in the next few years as well. If they hope to also introduce more characters, while continuing the franchises they’ve started, they’re going to have to bump up production to 3-4 films per year.

black panther should be the next hero to come. he is by far the most interesting hero of the group . a king of a nation with storm as a wife , beside that T’Challa’s story is great . a he is the only major black hero of the group.

Im a huge fan of comics in general, and the CB movies that have been comin out are awesome.. The Avengers is gonna be the highest grossing movie of all time I predict, Robert Downey Jr, ScarJo, Natalie Portman, Samuel L Jackson, Hugh Jackman are HUGE names.. DC hasnt been as lucky with honestly Batman is their only success but toss The Flash out there and Green Arrow or a Justice League movie would help with makin a fraction of the $$ Marvel has.. Maybe a Justice League movie would help out.. No Hailley Berry please tho!!!!!
False. Bullseye was the bad guy from Daredevil. That is most certainly Hawkeye

If they make more movies then they should really teach Hawkeye how to actually shoot a bow better than an amateur. His “techniques” blow donkey balls especially if he is supposed to be the greatest archer of all time. He shouldn’t need two wristguards if he’s a good shot. Better technique otherwise the movies are fabulous.

You hater. Jeremy renners had to use two wristguards because he hurt his arm and they didn’t want to injure his arm any further. And it’s his first time as Hawkeye; lay off! As if you could do any better!!!!
jeremy renner was traind by several archers that were in the 2008 olympics including the winner of the gold medal.
I read that article a few months ago. You and the author need to get a life and just enjoy the show. I shoot competitive traditional archery, nderstand the ins and outs of technique and ballistics, and I enjoyed watching Renner’s part in the Avengers. The point of watching comic book movies is to escape reality. Oh, and by the way, youth interest in traditional archery has increased ten-fold since the release of the Avengers and the Hunger Games. Not bad for a couple ‘amateurs’.

Black Widow and Hawkeye movies would garner the same box office response as Elektra and the Punisher…which was nada.
Marvel Studios is drunk with pride over the success of the Avengers, and rightfully so. But, do not do the “walk of shame” by attempting solo movies for these characters.
Black Panther, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist ae perfectly reasonable characters to bring to the big screen. I’ll even concede Nova or Moon Knight if the scripts were airtight, but to assume that moviegoers will make want to see a trilogy of Black Widow movies is not realistic.

I completely agree. I would love to see either a Black Widow or a Hawkeye film, but only Black Panther would interest me otherwise. I think giving Black Widow a movie based on her spy past and then playing off of the Hawkeye getting her into S.H.I.E.L.D angle would be profitable. All of the other major players (except Fury, which I heard has a movie in pre-production) in the movie have had their back stories put to film. It seems only fair that Black Widow and Hawkeye get one as well–even if it’s one movie instead of each having their own or something.
as a superhero fan along with some of my close friends i have to diagree with ur statement i beleive that many people that are superhero fans such as my self would be extatic to find out that there is a hawkeye and black widow solo movies to add to the awsome collection and line up of the avengers character movies. we beleive this because they play just as big of a role as any othe character in this movie.also in the movie they are portrade as avenger members rather then sheild members in one of the end scenes where thay are gathered in a cirle for the emphazised moment.
Hrm, it seems as though I’m among the few who’d like to see a solo Hawkeye film. I’m a relatively recent addition to the fanbase, though I did see the potential for a good character Marvel had in Hawkeye during the Avengers.

I’ve never read the comics, but I would love to see black widow and hawkeye together in a film with nick fury and the agency shield trying to kill black widow/recruit, including the battle they talk about in the avengers.
Yeah, I think it would be great movie because they also said some of their stories in the movie:avengers like the “budapest” thing and yeah, the saving of black widow by hawkeye. Other parts of the movie:avengers has some connections also to the other characters like Capt. America’s Tesseract story. I don’t know if what I just said is true because I haven’t seen Capt. America’s movie.
I completely agree ~ I was so intrigued with the Black Widow/Hawkeye back story. When I left the theater, I said I wished they had done a movie on their story before the Avengers. Now, I’m excited at the prospect that they may do one and hope it comes out before the next Avengers movie. Scarlet Johanson kicks ass!
I think that the Black widow and Hawkeye movies should be combined into one movie, since in The Avengers black widow told loki that Hawkeye was hired to kill black widow. I think it has some really great potential
i’d settle for that but I really want to see his circus past with Trickshot and Swordsman. Plus Crossfire. They couldn’t really do that since it’d probably start with him saving the Black Widow.

there is a possibility for a hawkeye film. if they let bullseye be the villain. it will create a bigger impact since jeremy renner plays hawkeye and collin farrel plays bullseye..seem to be a perfect fit for a movie since both of them ( including samuel l jackson) were in SWAT.
I’d love that but Bullseye and him only cross paths once in the comics, when Bullseye impersonates Hawkeye. It’d probably be Crossfire or Swordsman. Or maybe his old brother
why cant you just have the black widow do a solo movie when she starts dating hawkeye and they both work togther and at the beinging have them both work as marines and have the world see how they turn and also show how they met to.

A hawkeye movie would be great, but not with black widow. Hawkeye married Mockingbird(a character on a lot of top ten lists with fans) and it would be fun to see a marvel character actually have a happy love relationship! In the comics Black Widow seduced Hawkeye and treated him like crap. Yes, they do have a history together, but it’s a sad one with Hawkeye being taken advantage of. Give him a movie by himself, or each their own movie, but not together.

Why is everyone so exited about a Black Panther movie?! He’s cool and all but I think a hawkeye movie or a Black widow movie would be cool.Or they could mix them both together so that way it could show how Agent Barton was sent to kill her and what happened. I think that would be steller.

Like someone else stated, every other character in The Avengers has had their own background explained in their solo movies. However, Hawkeye and BW have not, and in The Avengers, the movie references a “past” that they shared but the audience is left in the dark as to what their past actually is. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE!

They should make a S.H.I.E.L.D movie, featured around Black Widow and Hawkeye; or they should make a film of just the two of them, how they met, their adventures together, ect. ect.
I would love to see a Loki movie. Also a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie sounds actually quite good, like how it started and how they recruited Hawkeye to then kill Black Widow but instead saved her life, and, I really want to know how they met so it would be a really cool movie, like, just dealing with S.H.I.E.L.D. and them cause Thor, Captain America and Iron Man already have their own movies, however Tony Stark should have a small cameo because he always does in some way or another. but mainly focussing on Hawkeye and Black Widow, at least, that is my opinion.
