Ahead of the release of The Defenders on Netflix this week, a new video pits Marvel anti-heroes Black Widow and Elektra against each other, courtesy of their stunt doubles. While Captain Marvel and Ant-Man & the Wasp will be the first MCU films headlined by female superheroes, Black Widow has been a key player in the MCU since Iron Man 2. Meanwhile, the TV side of the MCU boasts a number of powerful women. One of the most intriguing, however, is Elektra. Introduced last year in Daredevil season 2, her death will push her in a bloody new direction when The Defenders premieres.

Part of that shift will will provide Elodie Yung with a whole new character to explore in The Defenders. It will also further devastate Matt Murdoch, who won't be starting the show off in the best of circumstances. Given Elektra's ties to The Hand and the villainous Alexandra, The Defenders will diver deeper into her character and the mysterious connections that those around her share. But as fascinating as both Elektra and Black Widow are, the distance between Marvel's films and TV shows means we may never see them share the screen. Now, however, we have the next best thing.

Lauren Mary Kim, the stunt double for Elektra in The Defenders, has posted a video online, showing her battling Amy Johnston, one of Black Widow's doubles. Coordinated, edited, and filmed by Bryan Sloyer with fight choreography by Tsuyoshi Abe, the short provides a high-octane battle between two stellar martial artists. Though not fully in costume, each actor features a nod to their character. All told, it's an exciting bit of side marketing for The Defenders and a great way to highlight Marvel's female fighters.

While Elektra and Black Widow usually fight on the same side, their independent streaks and complicated histories mean they've certainly come to blows before in the world of Marvel Comics. The most recent altercation came from Marjorie Liu's excellent run on Black Widow, which provided further insight into the lives of both women.

While Elektra won't be fighting Black Widow in the MCU anytime soon, the ninja will come face-to-face with a few other female warriors. Jessica Jones will certainly be going up against Elektra, and we may even see Misty Knight and Colleen Wing fight the resurrected warrior.

We don't know yet how the events of The Defenders will shape Elektra's future, but hopefully the nuanced character will have a long future in the MCU. And if Scarlett Johansson ever feels like cameoing on a Netflix show, fans may just get the Elektra and Black Widow fight they've been waiting to see.

NEXT: The Defenders Gets a Final Trailer

The Defenders premieres August 18 on Netflix, with The Punisher arriving this fall. Premiere dates for the new seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist have not yet been announced.
