In recent years, Starz has built up its library of current shows in order to rival fellow premium cable networks HBO and Showtime. Included in Starz’ lineup are the Emmy award-winning fantasy adaptation Outlander and the sprawling pirate drama Black Sails. Combining real historical pirate figures with characters adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, Black Sails follows the inhabitants of Nassau on New Providence Island during the Golden Age of Piracy.
For its first three seasons, Black Sails has occupied the Saturday night primetime slot on Starz – which has also been held by Outlander while the pirate drama was between seasons. However, it seems Starz is moving its Saturday content to Sunday in order to better rival HBO and Showtime, with the final season of Black Sails set to debut on a Sunday. Now, Starz has announced the official premiere date for Black Sails season 4 and debuted a new poster for the show.
/Film is reporting the final season of Black Sails will premiere Sunday, January 29th, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT. As seasons 2 and 3 of Black Sails, the show’s final season will run for 10 episodes, concluding in April. Starz additionally released a short synopsis for season 4 as well as a poster teasing the battle to come. Take a look:
The shores of New Providence Island have never been bloodier, but the closer civilization comes to defeat, the more desperately, and destructively, it will fight back.
Although Black Sails may not be the most watched or the most talked about series among Starz’ current lineup, the show found a steady viewership – perhaps even earning more as it went along. Throughout its seasons, fans have watched the progression of main character Captain James Flint (Toby Stephens) as he led his men aboard the Walrus and attempted to ensure the people of Nassau could live free from England’s reign. The Black Sails season 3 finale left the pirates with a victory against the English, but a bigger battle for the fate of Nassau and its inhabitants lies ahead in season 4.
Based on this poster, the synopsis, and the previously released short teaser for Black Sails‘ final season, fans can expect plenty more from this pirate drama as it nears its conclusion. Viewers will be treated to more battle sequences as the pirates fight for the freedom of Nassau and New Providence Island, but fans are also sure to get the drama and political intrigue that has been included in previous seasons as well. All told, Black Sails looks to end the series on a high note – certainly, it will have to in order to rival the Sunday night programming of HBO and Showtime – but fans will find out for themselves once the series returns in January.
Black Sails season 4, the final season, will premiere Sunday, January 29th, 2017 at 9pm ET on Starz.
