The first official poster for Black Panther has been unveiled ahead of a teaser trailer tonight. With three movies a year planned through to the end of Phase 3 in 2019, it's fair to say Marvel have a lot on their plate, with sequels to already established heroes and massive team-up Avengers: Infinity War on the horizon, as well as solo outings for new characters. And one of the most exciting in that regard is Black Panther.
Following on from the character's introduction in Captain America: Civil War, Ryan Coogler's film will see Chadwick Boseman return as T'Challa alongside a star-studded cast including Forest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Daniel Kaluuya. Aside from some nifty concept art and a few teasing videos from stars on the set, though, we don't actually know much about the film, but that's all going to change soon.
Marvel have just released an official poster for Black Panther showing Boseman in costume (sans mask) sat in a Wakandan throne room. They've also confirmed that a teaser trailer will air during the NBA Finals Game 4 tonight on ABC. You can check out the poster in all its glory below.
The poster primarily gives us a better look at the MCU's take on Wakandan architecture. We only briefly visited the secluded, technologically advanced in Civil War's mid-credits scene - and that was mostly a science facility - but it now is clear that Coogler has gone for something rather comic accurate. The poster itself isn't the strongest Marvel's produced design-wise, with the photoshopping on Boseman's head and body pretty weak, but it does still do a good job of presenting T'Challa and his position of power.
As for the trailer, it's up in the air what it will reveal - the poster serves as an alternative to the now-common short teases - but it's likely to hone in on the world of Black Panther, reintroducing T'Challa and selling the land of Wakanda to audiences. Hopefully it'll give a fair showing to that cast - along with the Creed director, that caliber is a major selling point.
While it may seem odd to be pushing a movie coming out next year in the previous summer, Panther does come out in February, so this is very much fitting of Marvel's standard marketing approach. Indeed, releasing the trailer during the game airing on ABC is some strong cross-promotion from Disney. This is something we've seen a lot with trailer releases (many have debuted on Jimmy Kimmel recently) and they've already used the game to boost hype for Spider-Man: Homecoming. This ensures a maximum audience for the first look at their big 2018 release, something very important considering T'Challa is set to be an essential part of the MCU going forward; in fact, just the other day Boseman started filming on his next film, Infinity War.
