Black Panther Marvel Studios Rumor Patrol: Marvel Studios Looking To Cast Black Panther

When Iron Man first struck gold at the box office five years ago, launching Marvel Studios into the Disney-owned juggernaut it is today, comic book creators, producers and Marvel executives were able to freely share their seemingly limitless desires to bring all sorts of characters from the Marvel library of thousands to the big screen.

In addition to the core characters featured in The Avengers, others including Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther were on their way to becoming a reality with screenplays in development. Some of those are officially part of Marvel Studios long-term plans, others, like Black Panther are seemingly not. But three weeks ago, actor Morris Chestnut let slip that he was reading up on Black Panther comics before erasing the remarks, and that might be because Marvel Studios is actively searching for an actor to play T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yes, Black Panther may actually be in the cards, finally. Latino-Review has the scoop that Chadwick Boseman, the star of current box office hit 42, is leading the Marvel’s shortlist of actors who could play Black Panther. Playing Jackie Robinson in 42 was Boseman’s breakout role after working a variety of TV gigs with many key guest appearances on series including Fringe, Justified and Castle.

Black Panther is an extremely important Marvel character and represents the first black superhero in comics. If Marvel is in fact looking to cast T’Challa, it’s great news for fans who after hearing time and time again that other obscure characters were getting an introduction on the big screen (Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy), heard of no movement on the Black Panther project outside of another script in the works two years ago.

Black Panther, a character with superhuman physical attributes and senses, already has his fingerprints all over the film franchise. Captain America’s iconic shield for instance, is made of a material called Vibranium which is only found in the fictional African nation of Wakanda, where Black Panther originates from and rules over as its King. The rare and valuable commodity came from a meteor that crashed in the land and to protect it and their society, the small but advanced nation is intentionally kept secret from the outside world. The Black Panther costume is also augmented with vibranium armor and claws.

Even the S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjets that played a prominent role in The Avengers (and return in Captain America: The Winter Soldier) are designed and made by the Wakanda Design Group, also run by Black Panther. Whether or not the films connect those dots in the future is secondary to the fact that Black Panther may finally show up in Phase Two or, alongside Ant-Man and Doctor Strange who already have confirmed films for Phase Three.

If Marvel is aiming to cast the character now, Black Panther may very well factor into Joss Whedon’s Phase Two within the next two years. Perhaps he joins the team or cameos in The Avengers 2 or earlier, in The Winter Soldier – which just began production two weeks ago. Joss Whedon was actively informing media during the Iron Man 3 world premiere last Wednesday there there’s a pair of new characters joining The Avengers 2 who he described as a “brother-sister act” and maybe he’s throwing everyone for a spin. Or maybe, there are even more characters we didn’t anticipate.

We wouldn’t be surprise to see Black Panther or Wakanda to show up in the flashback sequences of Captain America: The Winter Soldier since in the comics – despite being revised twice – Captain America met a leader of Wakanda and the encounter played a critical role in the acquisition of vibranium and the inspiration for Cap’s circular shield.

Who should play the older Black Panther known as T’Chaka and where will the T’Challa first be introduced? Let the speculation begin!

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and Doctor Strange sometime after that.

  1. I collected the Black Panther miniseries back in the eighties. Enjoyed it very much. I’d love to see him get his own flick.

Personally, I’d love to see Idres Elba in the role. Despite the fact that he played Heimdall (and really, what’s it matter… the dude was buried under tons of armour and contact lenses), he’s got the look and screen presence to pull it off (check out the BBC’s “Luther” if you have Netflix – well worth it).

    • What do you do for the movie where the Avengers have to save Asgard from Loki? Idres Elba can’t arrive via Bifrost with the rest of the Avengers only to be greeted by Idres Elba.

Same reason Wesley Snipes can’t be Black Panther; what do you do when the vampires attack shield and start turning their agents into vampires? Snipes can’t team up with Snipes.

No repeat actors for the Marvel Movie Universe. I’m willing to over-look Rebeccas Romajin-Stamos’ appearance in the Punisher, even though she’s Mystique, but it should NEVER happen again.

  2. I bet this is for the SHIELD show, not a movie.

  3. For a lot of us, this isn’t just another comic book movie. This film is about as important as 1992′s Malcolm X. There was a great deal of pressure on all sides for the folks involved to get it right. They did, and it is still considered Denzel’s greatest performance.

A Black Panther movie that is commensurate in quality with the first Iron Man or The Dark Knight is not out of the realm of possibility IF the filmmakers involved understand the character that Jack Kirby and Stan Lee created.

Give us a story that flows, hire the best actors possible (and not the flavor of the month), and treat this movie with the same reverance that Richard Donner treated the first Superman with.

    • I hope Disney is willing to pay Fox for the rights to use Storm in Black Panther’s origin story. During his travels throughout Africa young T’challa meets Storm and the two become lovers and a super-hero duo for a time. It would be well-worth it I think.

  4. “I bet this is for the SHIELD show, not a movie.”

I hope not. Nevertheless, if it is, marvel probably will use the shield series to introduce black panther to the big screen (providing the shield series comes out before a black panther movie).

Glad to hear about a black panther movie. It’s a character that will definitely work on the big screen. Luke Cage, Submariner, and Ms. Marvel are other characters I am looking forward to seeing on the big screen, particularly in their own standalone films. Morris Zchestnut is a good pick, but I also think Djimon Hounsou would also be good for the roll.

    • role*

    • I concur with your selection of Djimon Hounsou and frankly I believe he would make the best choice with his African background. Boy, I am salivating to seen MR. Hounsou as the Black Panther.

  5. Michael Jai White. He’s a martial artist as well as a damn good actor. Whether he can hold down a blockbuster as a leading man is another story. I’d have gone with Idris Elba, but he’s already Heimdall.

    • He’d be better as either a rebooted Blade or in partnership with Scott Adkins as Power Man (Luke Cage) and Iron Fist.

  6. So umm Halle Berry’s baby is.. T’Challa’s??

Yeah just go with it… :D

  7. If Reggie Hudlin were somehow able to convince Quentin Tarantino to direct a Black Panther movie based upon Hudlin’s own “Who Is The Black Panther?” arc, combined with Mark Bailey’s screenplay, I have a feeling that a Black Panther movie would leap to the top of Marvel’s Phase Three plans.

    • No to Tarentino. That would suck horribly

      • a not e

      • My point, is that the pressure to get this film off the back burner for a Phase Three franchise would be intense if Tarantino was behind the camera…not that he ever would.

  8. Don’t forget that the Black Panther’s father actually beat Cap in hand to hand combat when he was the BP himself. I read somewhere that Cap was supposed to be the best in hand to hand combat, but he seems to get his arse kicked quite a bit in the books.

  9. I don’t think BP should be played by an American. He is not American. He does not have the ingrained political schism we have. He is a king and a great leader. I don’t want him throwing around slang terms we use and acting like he has a chip on his shoulder because he has been “oppressed” all his life by “the system”. I am not saying those are not valid concerns, they are just not his concerns.
I love the Panther character, he is like Captain America in that he is more of an ideal than an individual, and don’t want to see it destroyed just to have a black guy in the marvel universe. If they could model him on the animated Avengers character that would be fantastic.
Done right, he would be awesome.

  10. Terrence Howard!? To soon? It wouldn’t be awkward lol…

    • Terrence howard beats women so no. Plus he is too light skinned has a pansy voice and just no.

    • Terrence howards is too light skinned and has a weak voice.

  11. I hope Brad Pitt is cast. He would make a good Black Panther…

    • Keep your whiny butthurt out of this. “Imma so mad cuz a black guy gets to replace one white character out of hundreds so i beleive that one of the few black characters hsould be whitewashed like most/if not all asians are in movies >:[” – Wes

In all seriousness if we did wanted to whitewash Brad pitt is not the man. Troll harder :D

  12. Seriously don’t use Idris Elba because he will be cast as Jon Stewart in Green Lantern reboot and Justice League

    • I just envisioned the entire trailer n my head and the scope was epic. Idris as Jon could bring massive redemption to the Corp. the last movies was an embarrassment. N I had such high hopes for Reynolds.

  13. Y’know, it’s a shame that Hollywood still has that same mentality that it did back in the seventies when producers thought that Cicely Tison was the only black actress in town. Michael Jai White is a fine physical specimen, but he is not going to carry a billion dollar franchise any more than Djimon Hounsou.

A Black Panther trilogy is going to need young blood that can grow into, and not grow old in the role. This is a project like Cabin In The Sky, Carmen Jones, Dreamgirls, or The Color Purple that all of Black Hollywood will want to participate in.

Joss Whedon has the Branch Rickey juice to convince Marvel Studios to make this happen. Somebody needs to hire Antoine Fuqua to direct, Denzel to portray T’Chaka to put asses in seats, Wesley Snipes to play Uncle T’Shan, and NATE PARKER to own this muthafunkin’ role as T’Challa, THE BLACK PANTHER!!

Marvel needs to break out of their comfort zone, step outside of their self-imposed gated community, and make one of the greatest superhero franchises in this history! MAKE MINE T’CHALLA!!

    • Love the cast but I really think Chadwick Boseman should play the role of T’Challa. other then that the cast would put all asses in the seats for sure

    • i agree with xmasevebaby i luv the cast but chadwick boseman would be a good black panther , but the rest of the cast would be a must see movie

  14. Eddie Murphy as T’Challa and James Earl Jones as T’Chaka.. :P

  15. It would be a Fantastic addition to Marvel to add Black Panther between 2014 and 2015 to follow Marvels tradition of comic book characters and accuracy.

  16. Chadwick Boseman seems like a Flavour of the month …. Edris Elba would be great BP but he’s already Heimdall in Thor… the best option I like and some people seem to think is Djimon Honsou.. He is good actor , and he’s not your typicallyAmerican Actor.. He’s African and his voice as T’challa would be great…

Chiwetel Ejiofor- would also be Good … and also Michael Jai White

  17. The perfect actor for the role of the Black Panther should go to SEAN BLAKEMORE This guy CAN ACT, He has THE LOOK, likeable yet intimidating. and the guy stays ripped and in great shape.

  18. Chadwick Boseman is a fantasic actor. I def see Oscar nod for 42. However I don’t feel him right for the role of T’challa. Imo Djimon Hounsou is perfect for this this role. However people might think his age is a conflict. Lee Thompson is still out there, and I think it would be good for them to give him a look. Nate Parker too.

  20. Chadwick would be great as Black Panther, he is a great actor & I am sure he is more that capable of playing him with the appropriate accent, unlike Halle Berry who was embarrassingly bad as Storm. I am all for it, those of you suggesting Stripes or Washington are crazy, they are both too old for the role.

  21. Clé Bennett as Black Panther!!!

    • I can dig it

  22. Chiwetel Ejiofor for Black Panther.

  23. I want to be filmed too. But all the film makers around the world wont give me a chance. Oh boo hoo hooo me pick me please.

I promise that I can do it all

  24. Sebastien Foucan would be perfect check out his imdb page. I could not see anyone else in this role.

  25. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje , is the best pick for this role or at least another important role in this movie.

Please Marvel don’t make this movie like a teenager movie, you did not make Bat man like that… it needs to be grand, powerful and raw,… Adewale is perfect for Black Panther!

  26. Jamel White or Will Smith would make the perfect Black Panther

  27. I ment Michael Jai White or Will Smith will make the perfect black panther!!
