Bizarre Bewitched Remake Trailer

Mar 24, 2005 by

Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman in BewitchedAccording to this trailer you can add Bewitched to the list of mutant movie remake offspring.

If you were hoping for a revisiting of the premise of the original show: Forget it. Instead of a bumbling husband with a loving wife who happens to be a witch, you have a bumbling actor signed to be in a TV remake of the original series with an apparently spoiled co-star (Nicole Kidman).

Now I love watching both these actors on screen, and I’m sure that Will Ferrell will manage to make this funny, but I am again amazed at:

A. The continual need of Hollywood to tap 60′s TV shows and movies for material.

B. If they’re going to do that, why make such radical changes to the original concept? Do they think that this way they can borrow an idea but still get points for originality?

Another thing that annoys me is when a movie is blatantly “self-aware”, as in this case with the acknowledgement of the original as a TV series within the film. It takes a deft directorial hand to pull off a wink and a nudge at the audience (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off comes to mind). It can work with the occasionally tossed out reference, but to base an entire movie on that?

But don’t take my word for it, check out the trailer for yourself.

  1. That trailer was terrible; now I want to see the movie less than ever. You’re right; why do moviemakers destroy original concepts like that? Maybe they wanted to have the name recognition of the old show, and yet put a “fresh new spin” on it.
