The latest word from HBO has Big Little Lies season 2 in early development. Following the critically acclaimed first season earlier this year, the original program created and written by David E. Kelley -- and based on the novel of the same by Liane Moriarty -- has gone on to become a fan favorite. Featuring starring turns from the likes of Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Shailene Woodley, the show was overseen by Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée.

Centering around a tight knit group of mothers in Monterey, California whose lives begin to spiral toward violent ends, Big Little Lies garnered plenty of positive acclaim for what was initially billed as a seven-episode miniseries. The show has since gone on to receive numerous pending Emmy nominations -- including Outstanding Limited Series -- though the latest word has the powers that be at HBO intent on keeping the ball rolling.

According to TVLine, HBO president Casey Bloys has approached Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty to begin developing a second season of the hit premium cable show. Thus far, both Kidman and Witherspoon have expressed interest in working on another season, but director Jean Marc-Vallée has proven to be a harder sell, claiming, "There is no way; there’s no reason to make a season 2. That was meant to be a one-time deal, and it’s finishing in a way where it’s for the audience to imagine what can happen."

Nevertheless, Bloys is fairly confident that he can change the acclaimed French-Canadian director's mind. Speaking to the possibility of Big Little Lies season 2 with the participation of Marc-Vallée, Bloys stated:

"I know [Jean-Marc] said that… but Nicole and Reese can be very persuasive. First we have to see the material and see if it’s worth everyone’s time. And if it is, [we’ll have a] conversation about directors."

While many fans of Moriarty's original novel may still be bemoaning the differences between the book and the showBig Little Lies fans can begin to speculate anew in regard to what may befall the show's characters and where their storylines will eventually go in the as-yet unofficial second season. Still, although it's an unlikely candidate for a second season, the first series did conclude in a way that would keep things open ended and the story of the Monterey mothers going.
